    Hi
My D510 is still going quite strong after 5 years but I'd like to basically use it on my desk permanently. How do I configure it for this? I'm thinking specifically about the power management & the sleep modes etc?
I've already attached a nice monitor and am about to buy a wireless keyboard & mouse.
What's teh best physical configuration? Can I close the laptop & keep the processor running at the same time?
    Thanks

    CT

You can set it to however you feel is best. You can set it up so Windows ignores when the lid is closed. I would suggest you use sleep while it's inactive. It will save on power and will generate less heat.

It's easiest if you buy a docking station. It also gives you more port options. The one you are looking for is a D/port.

As mentioned, you can use it without the docking station. Just set it up to do nothing when the lid is closed. You would then configure it to use the external monitor as the primary display device.

For me personally, I would use the laptop screen as a second monitor. Just my two cents.

D/Port is a great option for 3 reasons:
    1. DVI (assuming your nice monitor has DVI/HDMI etc)
    2. Extra USB ports (4 of them)
    3. Price, D/Port is very cheap on eBay
