Does anybody know, if the Latitude E-Series or -dockings provide "power over eSATA" ?

Dell-support says "no" - but the combined usb/esata-plug on the left side should deliver high power, they say.

Maybe it is possible to connect a external eSATA HDD or device without external AC, even if the plug is not official "power over eSATA"-standard.

    Any reviews?

There are two sets of contacts (USB and eSATA) within a combo USB-eSATA socket.

The normal eSATA plug only uses the eSATA contacts, which is why power has to be taken from a separate USB socket. This is the way low (<2.5W) power eSATA devices (eg 2.5" HDDs) operate.

There is no technical reason that I know for not having a special plug + cable which uses both the eSATA and USB contacts. One existing device that uses both sets of contacts is the OCZ Throttle eSATA flash drive.

Does that mean, it is possible to use a external 2,5 Sata HDD disk with an eSATA-enclosure like that (ebay art 360161682066) without any further AC adpters or usb-powercables?

Or even the rough HDD with a cable like that (ebay art 360159820517)?

Given that it lists three operating modes:

Then this device will take power from a USB/eSATA combo port.

Therefore it should work off the single port. If not, there's a separate USB power lead.

So it seems like someone has got round to making one of these units.

The E6500 P9500 does support power over esata!

    I just recieved some adapters - and it works (f.e. with a Seagate ST980210AS (2,5" - 5400)) - without using a y-wire to the usb port.

We have tried an OCZ Throttle power-over-esata flash drive on the esata/USB combo port on the Dell E6500 -- it does not directly support power over esata. But, you mentioned "adapters" in your post -- to what "adapters" were you referring? (are they something that plugs into the combo port, reroutes the USB power to the powered-esata pins, and passes the esata data/ground pins through on the rest of the adapters's external connector, in effect creating a powered esata connector?)

Any info would be most appreciated.

I just get a Delock 2,5" power-over-eSata HD enclosure and it works perfectly on my Dell E4300 on the eSata/USB plug. So I guess it should be the same on the whole Dell Latitude E serie.
