I have a 3+ yr old D620 that I have been really happy with. It is starting to show its wear and tear a bit, I have lugged this thing everywhere on a daily basis. So, looking at the current Dell lineup, there doesn't seem to be anything that strikes me as a similar model.

Here is what I particularly like about it - and what I'd require in a new one:

    1) Pretty durable solid build, including the way the screen locks pretty much in place - i.e. doesn't feel flimsy.

    2) 14" screen is only size I like: 15" a little too big to drag around while travelling, etc.. and 13" too small to work on.

Looked at the reviews on the Dell site of some of the current Latitude models and sounded like they are a bit flimsy. D620 owners who'd "upgraded" almost all seemed to be unhappy with them.

So, if anyone has ideas, either by Dell or another manufacturer, I'd appreciate hearing them. Thanks.

If you consider the E6400 to be flimsy then there's the E6400 ATR.

However, I would never describe my E6400 as being flimsy. It's a good compromise between being solid but still portable (~2.3kg). The exterior is metal and, although some of the interior parts such as the display bezel and palm rest are plastic, they are strong enough for normal usage. Perhaps the D620 contains more metal but is also heavier.

I would not expect to see any significant build differences with the E6410. If you don't want the latest technology then there are some good bargains to be found among the E6400s in Dell Outlet.

+1 You can always try to go with the new Vostro series, but since its new, there haven't been many, if any, reviews.

My wife and I used to have matching D620's. She still has her D620, although its on its fourth motherboard.

I sold my D620 for a E6400 a year ago. I think the E6400 is a pretty solidly built machine and an excellent replacement for my D620.
BUT I ended up selling my E6400 about 8 months ago. Not because I didn't like it. Rather it was due to my bad back. every pound I don't have to carry around with me, reduces the amount of pain killers I have to take.
So I ended up replacing my E6400 with a E4300 which I also love. the 13" screen on the E4300 isn't too small, but the resolution is a little on the low side (1280x800).

I'm planning on replacing my E4300 with a E4200, or maybe E4210 (if they release one) in the next few months. I realize I never use the optical drive on my E4300. so going with a E4200 will shave off another 1 to 1.5 pounds.

If you are set on a 14" unit, I recommend the E6400

you can always order one from dell, if you don't like it, you can return it.

Thanks for the replies all, I'll take a second look at the 6400. I was just going some comments I saw on the Dell site, since I've never seen one. Anyhow I'm not in a rush to dump my D620 (its my 2nd), but I figure sometime within the next 6mos-year I'll need to go for it.
