xD is a proprietary format, much like the memory stick found in Sony products. It is smaller, but is significantly slower than its SD competitor (5MB/s vs 10-20MB/s transfer speed). Also, xD cards themselves are usually more expensive. However, Olympus and Fujifilm use this format exclusively, and it won't be possible to use an SD card with any of their cameras. So, while if you have a choice between two cameras you like equally, pick the one that uses SD over xD, but if you like a Fujifilm or Olympus camera alot, go ahead and go for it--the xD transfer speed of 5MB/s will still give you 3-4 pictures transferred a second.

They could mean when we use an adapter for XD? I have never used XD in my laptop and have used SD a handful of times.

ofelas, could you check whether the SD card zone is now cooler on the outside of the laptop? My E6400, even on idle, heats up the SD reader zone considerably.

On my M4400, it feels cool, as there's no HDD under the SD reader anymore.
On the missus' E6400, it doesn't feel warm per say, but I didn't really notice any unusual temps before the update.

    Sorry that wasn't more helpful.
