    Hi guys

Does anyone know how much energy Dell's latest laptops use when in standby mode? I've tried looking on their website, but I can't find any definitive figures (I'm using a Precision M4400, if that helps).

Before I always used to hibernate or shutdown my laptop to save energy, but I'm curious if standby mode really uses much power or not.

    Thanks in advance.

I don't know the answer, but we can perform an experiment :)

    1) Make sure your battery is properly calibrated and find out the real fully charged capacity (ie in watt-hours).
    2) Unplug your laptop and note what percentage of battery you have left.
    3) Put it into standby.
    4) Wait a couple hours. I mean like 4 or 5. Overnight might be convenient. Longer the better, but you don't want your battery to drain completely.
    5) Turn on your laptop and note what percentage of battery you have left.

Now it's just math. You can find out how many watt-hours of energy your laptop used over a given period of time, and from these figures you can derive the average power consumption in standby.
