I have a Latitude D630 that shipped with a panel with 1280x800 resolution. I purchased (on ebay) a display that was advertised to be an official OEM Dell part with a resolution of 1440x900 so I can upgrade the resolution.

After putting it back together and booting up, everything works fine but the max resolution is STILL 1280x800. I went into the display properties and it doesn't have a setting higher than that. I even tried an Ubuntu LiveCD, and it autodetects the resolution to be 1280x800. (I've used Ubuntu LiveCD's on this model before with WXGA+ screens and they always have detected the resolution properly).

I have changed displays on this model before, but I only have ever changed the screen out for the same part. I know in all likelihood the seller probably gave me the incorrect screen, but since I've never "upgraded" screens on this model and only switched them out, is there something I may have missed?

I think you might need to do something silly like change the display cable... I do recall reading another post about that some time ago. Otherwise you should indeed make sure you got the right display (look up the model number or something); from my own experience these display cable issues still let you choose a higher resolution in Windows, but the picture will be bad.

Can the video cable define the resolution? Are there any specific numbers on the correct cable I should look for?

What part number is on the screen? I can tell you for sure if it is a WXGA+. One such part number is GR584.

P/N YN941 lists specifically as the WXGA+ coax cable, so there may be different cables.

Not sure about that though, as LCDs, at least for this system, come from Dell as an assembly.

Unfortunately I don't know what the part number is because I haven't disassembled the laptop to look. As soon as I have it I will post here.

Try to update/reinstall the drives for your monitor and display adapter.
