business models have longer product lifecycles. So dont expect a "new model" until the next platform launch, which seems to be at the end of Q1 2010 or Q2 2010

yea thats what i meant too. next refresh is likely to be the next platform change, as in Intel platform change.

DDR3 ram is useless at the moment, on a machine like this you get about a 10-15 min extra battery life, no increase in performance, but it costs much more

Eh, doesn't seem that bad. You can buy a 4GB (2x2GB) set of Corsair DDR3 on Newegg for $61 shipped right now.

how much is 2x2GB DDR2 and also the 4GB modules for DDR2 and 3

adds up on a unit like the m4400 which supports 8gb.

at the end of the day, for a little more battery life and negligible performance increase, why pay more?

    2x2GB DDR2 800:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...0381 1309221140 1309121118&name=4GB (2 x 2GB)
    $49.99 + shipping or $55 shipped

You're right about 1x4GB DIMMs for now. They run about $180 in DDR2 and $340 in DDR3 which is a pretty silly differential. Still, I don't see myself paying $300+ to put 8GB RAM in any laptop (even if it would be pretty cool). By the time 2x4GB sets of DDR2 are reasonably priced, I'd bet we'll see 2x4GB sets of DDR3 reasonably priced as well.

    In the meantime, $61 for DDR3 (2x2GB) vs. $55 for DDR2 (2x2GB) isn't a huge deal.

thats the thing, "by the time" there will probably be a new platform out. Intel's new platforms are gonna be out in Q1-Q2 next year.

so this could mean a 6 month or more wait for the next platform, as far as i can tell from the roadmap.

platform refreshes from intel comes in "ticks" and "tocks"

to the OP: the bottom line is, if you have something you're happy with for now, then just wait as long as possible! a quarter is practically a lifetime in the technology world.

8gb may seem a lot, but for the target market of this notebook, its a nice number when you run multiple VM's while multitasking on other stuff etc.

Also, most business users are currently using DDR2, so the savings of getting 8GB DDR2 for them, would be a lot more substantial than if they switched to DDR3.
