If people are worried they can always keep the firewall turned on for public networks (Windows 7 lets you keep two settings, one for private and one for public - not sure about Vista). This is a Windows mentality though and in the write up I explain why it's not necessary. All Apple notebooks and machines come with the firewall turned off.

Superfetch is a desktop oriented thing. Under a notebook it will usually have the opposite effect and slow things down more than it speeds things up.

Windows instant search is still pretty "instant" even with Windows Search turned off. Even with the default 5400 rpm HD I was able to hit the Windows key, type a word like "services" and have the results pop up in about 1-2 seconds. With Windows Search it takes less than a second, but that time difference is not worth the added processing cost of maintaining the indexes.

I noticed the opposite of what you said with the unknown devices. I did complete system restores to test it and in all the cases leaving the devices unknown was faster than actually installing the devices. For instance, on a fresh Windows 7 install there are 3 unknown devices. My superclean install gets rid of 2 of those, but when they were unknown the system booted at least a second or two faster.

In my write up I'll explain that you're not sacrificing true security. What you're sacrificing is a false sense of security. Yes this is a hard sell to Windows users, I am fully aware of that. Just realize though that not everybody buys into the Windows mentality of needing antivirus software and a software firewall on constantly or a Windows defender constantly running. In the Apple world, the people who ask "do I need to install an antivirus program on my new machine?" get laughed at. I wish it were the same in the Windows world. UAC is Window's sudo equivalent. That's where the security truly lies. It's time Windows users start learning about how Apple and Linux users survive without firewalls, antivirus programs, and spyware protection programs - all in the full writeup.

What may also be surprising is that notebook hard drives are quite power efficient these days. Some even use less power than some of the cheaper solid state drives! At most my Corsair SSD should be only drawing about 1 watt less power than the stock 5400 rpm HD as an overall average. When both are idle the power draw should be close to the same. When both are working the SSD may actually pull in more power. The actual specifications of the drives have the power consumption being quite close.

Glad you got something out of it. MiB's explanation was excellent!

I have found the driver you posted here at the driver support page from dell and installed it on my Latitude E6500 with Dell WLAN 1510a/b/g/n today. This driver was released 3/12/2009 for Inspiron Desktop 530/s and Studio Desktop 540/Slim 540s and is intended to support the ASUS WL138G-V2 Wireless LAN card. In relation to fixes and enhancements it is noted: "Driver that improves network connection and performance in the presence of wireless interference".
This driver works with my system!! (Even with german localization!) I noticed that nearly all network card options of the last official dell driver for the 1510 are supported with that driver and there are some few more (or they changed names, don't know for sure).
Testing this driver it had a positive impact on the latencies on my system. No more bad latencies (and no more audio-clicks) every couple of seconds/minutes even with the a-band turned on!

Thank you so much for your hint. And sorry for not posting directly to the topic of the thread.
    Best regards

Glad it helped. Don't worry about not posting directly to the topic. Anything that might help out other E6400/E6500/M4400 owners is welcome.

    Hi,
I have a little problem with the
    http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R212337.EXE driver for my E6500
The crackling sound and latency is gone and the w-lan work with this driver :) ,
but the DELL controlpoint connection manager won't run anymore.
Do you have any kind of hint to get it running, because e.g. I need that manager to run my UMTS-connection.
    Thanks!

What do you mean by all your taps show in the title bar? Am I understanding it correctly that when you tap your touchpad something happens in your Firefox title bar?

You've probably already checked this, but make sure there is exactly one space before the word Netscape and no spaces at all after that word in the title bar.

Also verify you have the actual Touchpad driver configured properly by using the left swipe gesture on the top edge of the pad to perform a back operation in both Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer. If it works in those two applications it means at least your pad is configured properly.

If it's configured correctly, the next thing I'd try is disabling all your Firefox extensions. Maybe one of the extensions you have is blocking/intercepting the command.

On a related note, if anybody figures out how to get horizontal scroll to work in Firefox please let us know. I still haven't figured out how to get that working with the ALPS touch pad.
