Dell just sent someone out to replace the touchpad - actually, the entire top cover containing the touchpad. He completed the replacement not even an hour ago, and the problems still persist. Actually, it seems worse. Not only does the cursor movement on the touchpad hang, but the physical buttons now frequently fail to respond. Guess we're not too surprised.

I can attempt to install that driver version, which is the same that I'm using on my E6500. I'm curious, is 7.102.* considered newer than 7.4.* or 7.5.*? Regardless, that the issues seems to have been aggravated by the hardware replacement instead of helped, it certainly seems that this is a widespread hardware / design issue, and unfortunately not something that can be solved by drivers.

    2 other links to note:

Dell Forums user PeruRican apparently fixed a nearly if not identical issue on his Inspiron 1525 by tightening the connection to the motherboard by wedging in one or more layers of tape between the touchpad cable and the motherboard connector. However, the connector type is different on our Inspiron 15. It is more of a "clamp down" then a "push in" connector. I tried the same fix regardless, but it did not help at all.

I wish i could find the problem with the touchpad on my D520....

There have been times where the the pointer on the screen will just go crazy as i am trying to move.. let say trying to click Start, I just have to ride the storm out for the 5 seconds that it is glitching, then it work fine.. Next time this happens i am going to press a key on the keyboard and see if it stops...

Same thing with tap to click, 99% of the time it will work with out issues, but other times it just will not work for me. If i let it go not working long enough a couple of minuets, it will start working fine again... If i dont want to wait it out, i go in to the mouse properties turn off tap to click, and with out even clicking apply, check the box to turn it back on, then click apply, and it will work from that moment on, for anywhere a few minuets to the next 2-3 weeks.

EDIT: just remembered, i replaced the palm rest and touchpad, and the problem is the same as it always was, more of a annoyance then anything else.

I used this driver in windows 7 and it has improved 99.9%, although I just got a logitech nano external mouse and I think that affected something. I had to unrar the toshiba auto extracting file for it to work. Good luck !

Hello, I experience the same issue as mentioned above. But I got to it through a bit complicated way.

My computer is Dell Latitude D830 (WinXP Prof SP3), I used it for about two years without any touchpad problem except sometimes the left button stopped to respond (both the touchpad one and trackpoint one). I negate a hardware issue as the icon in notification area responds perfectly to my actions (shows which button was clicked or where the touchpad was touched).

In recent time I have plugged my disk into different D830 because of repair and I had to install different wireless and display drivers (mine were Intel graphics and Dell wireless, leased one were nVidia and Intel wireless). Problems started when I plugged my disk back to my repaired notebook. I can still use trackpoint or mouse, but when I use touchpad, cursor does not respond. I negate a hardware issue as touchpad scrolling works all the time (sliding a finger near right or bottom edge of the touchpad).

I tried to uninstall nVidia and Intel Wireless drivers with no effect. I tried different touchpad drivers from Dell website with no effect. Finally I installed latest driver from Synaptics website. It works for me but all the bells and whistles of Alps driver like touchpad scrolling are gone. And Synaptics bells and whistles (e.g. Scrybe) does not work as well (no surprise with Alps touchpad). Reinstall of Windows seems as a solution of last resort to me.

Finally the issue I described above was resolved by installing Alps driver version 7.5.2021.101 (downloaded from Acer)

This solution is not flawless, as the Dell touchpad settings are inacessible (no surprise when using Acer driver) and trackpoint does not work, but it does not bother me at all.

For enabling advanced settings of touchpad it is necessary to set registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Alps\Apoint\UseCustomGUI to value 0.

    DELL Latitude E6500 Touchpad freezing

I bought my Latitude E6500 at the end of November 2009 (Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 3.06 Ghz processor; 4Gb RAM; NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160 M – so „nuclear station” 2000 $ business gadget with „DELL next business day on-site warranty”; OS Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit genuine honorary/promotional copy for MS test guys like myself).

I am a laptop/notebook mouse user for the last 20 years, so I am accustomated (and only) to laptop/notebook touchpads/mouses (normally they allow more sophisticated movements mostly in graphical applications/drawing with your fingertips moving).

From the very beginning I experienced problems with the Alps/DELL touchpad: frequently and systematically freezing/locking up for 2-3 seconds both in e-mail writing and graphic applications; you move/circle your fingers on the surface, but nothing happens with the coursor for 2-4 seconds. At the same time no problem with the Pointing Stick and also there were no such symptoms using the touchpad in Virtual XP Mode.

Finally in early March DELL replaced the motherboard and the touchpad/palmrest. I also reinstalled the OS from the very beginning. AND: the touchpad freezing problem appeared again and became even worse: the coursor locked for already 5 seconds sometimes. So I realized that it should be a driver/firmware problem. By the way there are a lot of forums where people express many critics and problems since they had the same annoying freeze issues with various DELL notebooks:

    http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/18890697.aspx

    http://www.fixya.com/support/t2551030-touchpad_stalls

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=363610
    just to have few.

BUT! I also found somewhere among these forums a slight note about „why not remove Alps/DELL driver and try the Synaptics one”.

    http://drivers.synaptics.com/Synaptics_v14_0_3_C_XP64_Vista64_Win7-64_Signed_default.exe

And I tried it on my machine AND IT WORKS with some restrictions: there are no such „Alps extras” like „browser support”, „scrolling”, „circular movement setting” or „touch sensibility” just the „old-fashioned” simple mouse settings, but the freeze symptom disappeared. O.K. the mouse moves a little bit slower even if it put to „fast” on the scale, but it is not so annoying like the freeze/lock. I also experienced that the coursor in browsers like Opera sometimes slows down anyway, but if I use the Pointing Stick for a moment then the touchpad „comes back” again. So I suggest that DELL should co-operate with Synaptics to develop a really working and customised for DELL machines driver/firmware.

I had exactly the same problem with my touchpad, as described in this topic. I have a DELL Latitude E6500. I have been using it without a problem for one year. Then after reinstallation of the OS, the problem came up.

After hitting any key on the keyboard, the mouse stopped for a few (2-5) seconds. Just the mouse (!) as the touchpad indicator on the taskbar signalized that I am touching it.

As I found a solution in this topic I wanted to install the new driver. Before installing I played around with the settings a bit, and I found the solution:

I went to "Control Panel" -> "Mouse" -> "DELL Touchpad Settings" -> "Touchpad Settings / Pointing Stick Settings", and turned off "TouchCheck" by unchecking the checkbox before "Enable".

    Hope this helps :)
