So let's make a new thread of this: I cannot upgrade the BIOS of my M4500 (Win7x64, i7 X920, 8GB RAM, FX1800M) to the newest BIOS A06. If I run the updater from Windows, it asks for the BIOS password, pops up a warning screen to not interrupt the process, and then does nothing. In Safe Mode, I get a warning that the laptop needs to be plugged into the power adapter and battery installed that I can't get past. When booting into DOS from a memory stick, the utility starts, says "Please wait...", then flashes an error message for a fraction of a second, and then exits. So, nothing I can think of works.

    Any ideas, anybody?

I spoke with Dell support and their answer was to try to install a new HDD and install windows on it and try again. Also there is a known bug with this release and for some reason the "firewall" (that's what the tech called anti-virus) doesn't allow the bios update to execute properly and I told him that I even tried uninstalling the anti-virus program I have and re-ran and it still didn't work, so he said that he guesses that I have to wait for the next update.

He did ask the tech next to him and the tech next to him said that there is no ETA but they are working on the next update already.

Well that part would most likely not work for me. Like I said, I tried booting into DOS from a memory stick, and that update failed as well. I won't even comment on the tech suggesting you going out to buy a hard drive and installing an OS just to get a BIOS update to work...

    Ahah!

I am not running any anti-virus products.

Yep, I guess so... Sure, why would we provide proper support to the people who have paid good money for our products. We have made the sale, so that's that.

I did ask the Dell Rep "do you have a spare HDD to send me so I can try that out?" Silence...

I am having exactly the same problem. They have released A07 too on March 9th, and it has the same issue. No idea what the problem is, I cannot find anything anywhere. Going to ring Dell and hate on them some.

    Anyone got a fix?

Really? Darn it! I haven't had a chance to try yet, but I'll post here when I do. If this still won't work, I am going to yell at someone at Dell....

O.k., you can strike me from the list of people not being able to update: This time it worked fine. I copied the BIOS updater to the root of my system drive (C-drive), and ran it from Windows. I am updated to A07 now, but the POST on the M4500 is still as dog-slow as it ever was... :(
