I have a trusty old Dell Latitude D600 (well, it WAS trusty) which has failed me.

Power cycled it the other day, it POSTed as usual then, when it should have been reading the MBR, just sat with an underline cursor at the top left of a black screen.

It runs internal diags without a problem. Video works because I see everything all the way through POST and I can enter the BIOS and see all the screens. Processor is also obviously healthy because of this.

However, no matter what I did it wouldn't see the hard drive or the CD drive. I attached both to another machine and both the hard drive and the CD drive are fine.

So, my logic said it had to be the IDE interface on the motherboard assembly which had died, right?

Well, no, apparently not. I bought a system board assembly, swapped it out and the behavior is exactly the same!

I am completely, totally perplexed. Anybody got any ideas?
