Vostro 1400 keyboard occasionally stops working

    Sometimes when the computer starts up, all lights above the keyboard turn on, it beeps several times (seems more random than a pattern of beeps) and then when windows starts loading, the keyboard lights completely shut off and the keyboard doesn't work anymore. I can't find any keyboard drivers, but windows is completely up to date. Does anyone have any ideas for other things I can try?

    Unfortunately our warranty has expired, so I can't get any support from Dell. The way this happens makes me think it's more a software error than a hardware one.
