that is the GPU heatsink, notice that the fan does not cover the GPU.

    you can see the chipset

above the chipset is the other side of the GPU

    they are really close together.

you can see the blue thermal pad, that is used for cooling the chipset, as you can see its only attached to the thin layer of metal which doesnt absorb heat too well.

I tried ntune on M1330. When I was idling on desktop (Aero turned off) it recorded my GPU temperature as 71-74 C. This cant be right. I also installed latest speedfan and it gives me the following temperatures:

    HD0: 38 C
GPU: 53 C (ACPI, might be chipset?)
    Core 0: 24 C
    Core 1: 24 C

Maye you guys should try speedfan and see what it says about the temps. Remember to check "Enable DELL support (use this function only on DELL notebooks)" that can be found under "Configuration" => "Options."

Wow, those core temperatures are quite wrong. I wouldn't put too much faith in the GPU temp either. Anyone feeling adventurous and feel like taking apart the M1330 to see how the cooling system is set up in that machine? ;)

Well, since we have seen that the 8400m GS has potential to be an overclocking beast, and that it has some lackluster cooling... what are the safe temperature ranges for this gpu? With such high OC potential I don't want to see anyone fry their laptop.
