    Hi,
I have got Vostro 1400 with GeForce 8400M GS and graphic card failed... I tried to reflow the chip and it worked for 5 day and then it go wrong again... My last chance is change motherboard... I look at ebay and I found motherboard with integrated Intel graphic... Is it possible to change motherboard with integrated VGA instead of one with GeForce VGA? I think it should work, but I'm not sure and I don't want to be surprised after spending 200 USD on new motherboard.

    Thank you Tomas

The two motherboards should be interchangeable. Dell puts in whichever motherboard is appropriate for each ordr during the assembly. The relevant part of the Service Manual is here.

Unless it's a family heirloom or you absolutely love the laptop i'd suggest buying a new one. Two hundred for a laptop that's not worth that is a lot to spend as well as your time in replacing the part. Dell has a very nice spec'd Vostro 1520 for $569 and it comes fairly loaded. Sale ends real soon btw.

Try to buy a broken laptop - one that broke the LCD or something - a lot cheaper.

Inspiron 1420 motherboards should also work, granted that you don't mind 'em saying "Inspiron 1420" in BIOS.

How did you tell the card failed? I think I've been having problems with mine. My screen started getting these vertical lines and flashing and just stopped working sometimes. I was gonna make a thread but I figure I'll ask you first.

Yes, it probably is... This problem is caused by bad architecture of VGA chip (8400M, 8600M)... Even Nvidia admitted it... My friend try to reflow the VGA chip and it has been working for 2 days and then die again... We will try it reflow one more time with higher temperature and we will see...
