    I've currently got a Vostro 1500 and it's going strong and, while it's not running quite as well as it used to, I doubt it will die anytime soon. That said, I'm likely going to delegate it to a back-up machine, or sell it for a bit of extra cash, sometime soon and upgrade to the m11x.

    Just unlucky I suppose... is it totally dead or is it some Nvidia GPU crap? If it's Nvidia, you still might have some recourse with the warranty extension... though I don't know if the Vostro 1500 is on the list.

    Dell's Nvidia GPU warranty extension list includes the Vostro 1510. However, a GPU problem usually results in a corrupted display, not a completely dead computer. Do any lights flash when you try to turn the computer on?

    For starters it all depends on which Vostro 1500 you have;

    There are 2 options; GM965 which gives you X3100 graphics, and PM965 options with an 8400M GS OR 8600M GT. Both GPU modules are proprietary Dell nVidia GPU's so they are unaffected by the recall.

    If it doesn't power on;

    Remove battery and AC adapter. Hold down power button for 30 seconds. This will reset battery memory. Proceed to power on normally after.

    Check your AC adapter and/or battery. Dell's only really use 2 tips these days, the round fat tip (most common) and a octangular fat tip (less common). See if you can snag your friend's 90 watt Dell adapter that is KNOWN working.

    After that you may have a bad motherboard. In that case I'll buy your Vostro :D

    I have a 1500 that's going on 2.5 years and I use it on average 8 hours a day, no issues other than reapplying thermal paste and cleaning out the air exhaust vent. As far as the GPU being bad I doubt it, as it's the plug in GPU and they weren't known for the problems that the soldered types to the motherboards experienced.

    I would check the obvious first such as a defective AC power pack or battery. Sometimes defective batteries can cause a laptop not to power on, not common but not out of the question. It's more possible that the mobo just crapped out.

    I would make sure the AC power pack is working, then the battery. You can remove the hard drive and dvd drive just to make sure it's not allowing the laptop not to power on.
