think it should fix your problem.

the unknown adaptor issue can still be present even if the adaptor still has a green indicator when plugged in.

out of curiosity how tight does the dc plug fit into the laptop DC jack ? is there any play with it ?

I have a vostro 1500 myself. My battery went out over 1/2 year ago. I bought an AGPtek battery. It has lost some charge capacity since my purchase but it still works.

My vostro's AC is the one came with my Vostro. The only components I have put in myself (besides warranty replacements) are HDD, ram, and new battery.

I don't remember where I bought my AGPtek battery. If you are interested and I can dig out my receipt, I will modify this post and let you know. The replacement battery was relatively inexpensive compare to Dell's offering and it worked. I do not know how long it's going to last though as it's already losing capacity and it's not even 1 year.

If the new adapter doesn't work, your motherboard/power jack is probably bad. I've seen the unknown adapter thing go both ways, probably about 50/50.

Thank you everyone for the replies. We'll see if the new adapter solves the issue.

I will also be doing a fresh install of windows 7 on this notebook, (after years of xp!) so i suppose that would fix any potential battery software bug.

I'll keep everyone posted, thanks again
