    Hello All,

I put an X7900 CPU (Intel® Core™2 Extreme Processor X7900 (4M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) into a Vostro 1500, I removed the stock heat transfer "tape" and used Arctic Silver paste. While I was in there, I cleaned the cooling fan, heat pipe tubes, and fins.

After a few days the CPU temps (using SpeedFan) are still 70+ degrees C.

I looked on Intel's web site and the only reference I could find for temp was a listing called"T JUNCTION = 100* C"

I would think that 70* C is HOT. should I open the lappy back up and look for a cause?

Is that full load? What is your ambient room temperature?

room temp is 70* F and the CPU is 54* C browsing the net and climbs from there if I use an app on facebook or watch the local news video. I have not tried to play a game yet.

I do have a second heat pipe on the Video card and that temp seems to run 50-58*C browsing or video. (speedfan reporting)

I would take it apart again and check to see if you have too much thermal paste on the CPU. I had that happen to me as well when I over applied. The trick is to only apply what looks like a bead of rice to the center of the CPU. Once you place the heatsink on top slightly twist the heatsink from side to side to remove any air bubbles.

If that doesn't work you could try running I8kfanGUI and set the fan to manual. I'm assuming the heatsink fins have been cleaned and are not clogged with dust etc.

If that doesn't work you may have to undervolt your CPU or decrease the max CPU load via Power Options which defeats the purpose of installing a better CPU.

That's so silly, undervolting a Core 2 Extreme processor. :p

Actually this has got me interested into getting a X7900 into my Vostro..

Funny how you picked that one thing out of everything else I said. And didn't I say undervolting defeats the purpose of that processor. Congrats for the numpty of the day award. :p

    Guess I forgot a /sarcasm ;)

OP, did you overclock it yet? You can try undervolting with RMClock or ThrottleStop to decrease temperatures. Your temperatures aren't exactly horrible IMO..
