    The touchpad/keyboard is really abysmal.

I'm having difficulty moving the cursor smoothly, most of the time I have to spend quite an effort to move it to where I want. Also, the touchpad will keep freezing periodically. And this problem is aggravated when the laptop is on battery power. I contacted dell support and they replaced the touchpad but the problem still persists. And now every time I contact dell, they basically give me the same steps to follow each time and none of them really work. The keyboard also has a jumping cursor problem.

Anyone else having this problem ?What is the possible fix ? Now I can't even return this crappy laptop.

I had the same problem with the Alps-branded touchpad on my M4400. I tried it without drivers, and with various drivers, under Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7. I never found a solution, and read that people who'd tried troubleshooting the hardware with Dell just went through a lot of hassle without ever resolving the problem. I ended up returning mine, rather than go through that (kudos to Dell for making my return process very easy). I didn't like the ergonomics of the keyboard/touchpad anyway, I found myself searching for the touchpad buttons, the cursor always seemed to lag a little, and the tactile feedback felt like my fingers were wet or something. It was hard to let it go, the RGB LED display was beautiful in Windows 7.

Good luck finding a solution...if you find one, please let us all know how you got it fixed!

This problem seems to specific to alps touchpads for some reason.

I think there is always a huge risk in getting a dell laptop.

I've not found any solution till now either. I know that its a hardware problem because the freezing is worse when the laptop is on battery power as opposed to ac power. I have relentlessly called dell and I really hoped that they would solve the problem but no success for me so far. Now I'm getting the motherboard and keyboard replaced but I've a gut feeling that this won't solve the problem either. If nothing works, can I finally return the laptop ? It's already more than 21 days since I got this laptop. I can continue using this laptop with a usb mouse but that's not good enough because I feel that there is something seriously wrong with the hardware and another problem might surface in future. I'm just tired of dell representatives giving me the same solutions over and over (reinstall drivers, reinstall os, change touchpad etc).

I really regret not looking into Toshiba laptops. Some of the refurbished ones have really high specs @ dirt cheap prices:

Please do report if this resolves your issues. Also wondering, what warranty do you have? Is it the next-day at-your-door service, or does Dell send a tech out to do repairs on ALL new laptops, regardless of warranty? I ask because I opted out of the premium warranty, but my E6400 is only two days old now, so I don't want to have to send it in for repairs already.

It's a standard 1 year warranty. They do send out a tech but the tech will just replace the part in question (without any diagnosis) .

ok today i got my motherboard/keyboard/palmset/heat sink/fan replaced and i can say that the problem is somewhat better but its still there. As I sad before, I was actually expecting this. Now I don't have anymore patience to contact dell again and go through the whole procedure again.
