i have a vostro 1700 with the lovely faulty gfx card.
i was using the laptop in the bathroom around some moisture (nothing excess just the odd warm up the water) No steam. ive been doing this for the past few years.

any way the other night the computer just turned off (after taking it out of the room). i turned it back on and it took a while to boot past the bios screen and the computer ran fine for another hour or two than it just turned off. i tried to turn the laptop back on and it just flashed the blue battery light so i let it cool down all night long.

the next morning i tried to turn on the laptop again and it still just flashed the blue battery light at me and nothing happened. after about trying to turn it on for about 10 min it turned on and ran fine for 4-5 hours. than it just turned off and will not turn back on.

I have used another batter cord so i know that is not the problem. all that happens is when i plug in the power cord it flashes the BLUE battery light and than it goes away. some times i hit the power button and the power light and the battery light flash and goes away but nothing happens. any ideas?? i dont want to pay some one alot of money for them to tell me its dead.

    thanks

Okay first off the defective Nvidia chip does not prevent your machine from powering on.

    Try:

    - Testing your AC adapter with a multimeter

    - Using a known good Dell 90 watt AC adapter

    - Removing battery and AC adapter and holding down the power button for 30 seconds 2-3 times

After that, it sounds more like power circuitry issues with your motherboard.

I got a friends powercord so it's not that. I've held the power button numerous times and that isn't helping. So it than looks like I need another laptop than. Great lol. Just when intel recalls some motherboards I want that new i7. Any one else got some other ideas?

Unfortunately without replacing major components of your machine with known good parts, it's hard to know what went wrong. The Vostro 1700 is pretty easy to get down to the motherboard, go to support.dell.com and punch in your service tag and get the service manual.

The graphics cards in the Vostro 1500 and 1700 are not faulty cards, sorry. Both the 1500 and 1700 use a different design graphics cards. I have a Vostro 1500 and 1700 and I wouldn't get rid of either tbh. I can't stand 16:9 screen ratio screens. It's hard to find 16:10 resolution laptops anymore.

I saw on Ebay a mobo for the 1700 around $110 or less.
