I have a Dell Vostro 1700 that ran fine with Adobe CS2 then I upgraded to CS4 - now xp takes ages to boot up and load applications - I even tried a fresh format and upgrading ram to 3GB - Currently I am considering upgrading my processor from a T7250 to a T9300(or T9900) - Would upgrading the processor solve my problem and make my computer run super fast? or do I need to get a new laptop? help very much appreciated

You should be able to upgrade to any 800MHz FSB Socket P processor. This includes the T9300, but not the T9900. Nonetheless, if you really want to see improvements in boot and application load times, you want to upgrade to a faster HDD (or much, much better, a good SSD), as that'll be your primary bottleneck. Faster processors and more memory will help, just not nearly as much.

I have a 500GB WD 5400RPM with 8MB Buffer as my primary HDD -- I guess I could use an SSD as my primary and use my 500gb as my secondary -- Link to a good SSD compatible with my laptop?

you should be cautious that ssds dont have more than 250gbs. They also cost alot so i would consider waiting or getting a new laptop..choice is yours.

yeah, good call -- I am planning on upgrading in january -- any suggestions? I talked to dell sales and they said the XPS Studio 16 -- how would it run CS4 any better than my current laptop?

I would wait for the next revision of the studio xps.Im guessing you have the 8400m gs or 8600m gt. It might be hard to replace the cpu in a vostro since its deep inside the case. I thought the quadro cards were good for SC and other rendering programs. They come in precision or latitude laptops. You might want to try out win7 to when you get a new notebook.
