I'm planning my next notebook purchase and wherefore interested in fan noise levels of those two models. Does it have a high-tone annoying pitch as stated on e.g. ThinkPad 410? How often does the fan kick-in?

Fan noise levels depend on a lot of factors. It's impossible to predict the exact amount of fan noise that will be present, plus, some fans are louder than others (I've had that on my D620/D630).

How much fan noise will be present depends on a couple things. If you can get a P-series CPU along with integrated graphics, under normal circumstances, there will be little or no fan noise. If you use the notebook on a flat surface and jack the back of the laptop up by a half inch, ventilation will further improved, leading to lower fan RPMs.

There is a review of the Vostro 3500 with detailed noise check @
Notebookcheck: Review Dell Vostro 3500 Notebook

I'd be interested if the Vostro 3700 performs better regarding noise, as there is more space for cooling in the bigger case.
