My 3 year old Vostro 1400 backlight went out. I can still see the image with a flash light. Everything works when using battery power but the backlight goes out after a few minutes when the laptop is plugged in. Is this a mother board problem, graphics card problem? or is it something simpler, inverter? backlight tube? Thanks for your help.

What if you try dimming the screen to the lowest level on AC?

I once came across a ThinkPad A31 with a dying backlight. If you cranked up the brightness past halfway or so, it'd go out after a couple minutes. If you kept the brightness below that point, it'd stay lit indefinitely. Eventually swapping the backlight solved the issue, so I'd agree that this is a backlight issue.
