With Vostro models, from what Ive read they are designed for small businesses. Does this mean I cannot buy it as an individual consumer?Im a student, and prefer the look and options available in Vostro, and the prices seem more reasonable. But is this because they are offered to small businesses and you must show evidence of this on purchase? Im also still a little uneasy with purchasing a Dell, so any advice would be great

I bought a Latitude, which are meant for medium to large companies, without a problem. Dell doesn't mind selling more laptops, as you can imagine.

As for quality of Dell, here in Europe the Latitude and Precision models (= high end models) are very sturdy and well built. Dell's business support (which is included with Latitudes but you have to pay for in Vostros I think) is excellent and worth the price. No clue on Vostro quality.

Remember that support quality in Europe, US and Asia varies considerably, so only take this into account if you are in the EU.

Just put your name when it asks for company name - Dell doesn't really care.
I got my Vostro 1700 for over £200 less than the same spec Inspiron 1720 and with a much better warranty - Next Business Day Onsite so they come to you rather than having to send it back.

I just put 'n/a' where it asked for the company name. My graphics card fubared on me and had to get it replaced, after calling dell and finding out the problem, they came out next working day and replaced it, very impressed with the service.

From the above posts it seems Dell's support is still great even in Vostros. Good to know, I'll start recommending them to folks with low budgets from now on :)

Yup - had 2 LCD replacements (one after 12 months due to dead pixels and a couple of months later due to dust behind the glass) and when I asked for help ordering a second HD caddy and interposer they were sent out next day with no charge.

Both visits were quick, professional and totally satisfactory - morning next day in my living room.

Everything else being equal, it is always better to buy a "small and medium business" Dell rather than "home and home office". I think you will find the tech support tends to be better. Dell doesn't mind what sort of business or not-business you are! They are interested very much in their business - which is selling computers et al, to you...
