Has anyone ordered dvd external drive off the built site? Agent gave me the part number (313-9874) but could not pull up item. Wanted to know if this had the same finish as the V13 or not?

    Hi,

you may have a look at Dell part No. 313-7922.

There are some other things to consider:
Slim optical drives draw 1500 mA@5V. An USB port gives 500 mA@5V by spec. So, using an external optical drive without an own power supply heavily overloads the port (The joke called Y cable shipped with external slim drives won't help much).

So, before you go ahead and buy such a unit, you should request information (preferably written) about the power demands the USB ports of your computer can satisfy.

If mobility (and design) is not an issue, I'd rather recommend a Half Height drive that comes with its own power supply.

    Michael

P.S.: Dell Europe has an external drive that is labelled as "compatible with Vostro V13": Part No. 429-14945

Edit: perhaps the expensive stylish drives for the Adamo is what you're looking after

Thanks, if I were to use the stand alone unit it would be at home with the laptop plugged in, so I don't think battery is an issue... at least at this time.

Somehow or rather you must have received some inaccurate information. A single USB cable is capable of supplying enough power to a slim optical drive. There are many casing out there esp in ebay and China. You don't even need the y-cable

I would re-word that as "most recent slim optical drives". I think most, but not all, USB ports are capable of providing more than the specified 500mA which means that they can usually power either and slim optical drive or a 2.5" HDD. However, manufacturers often supply a Y-cable as a backup for the few situations where one USB port does not provide enough power.
