Tried a few searches but couldn't find anything on this.

Has anyone had any luck using the e6400 to watch streaming video connected to their TV? This would be more straight forward if my TV had HDMI I think. It's an older HD ready model. Video inputs available are: component, composite, S Video.

I haven't seen anything, but I was hoping maybe there was an inexpensive Express card that had S Video output. I assume there is, so my real question is if it's worth it or not. Is the video quality going to be ok?

So you want to output your image from your laptop to your TV.
Here are what the laptop supports:
    - VGA
    - Display Port + Audio
    - HDMI + Audio (with Display Port to HDMI converter)
    - DVI (with Display Port to DVI converter)
    - VGA (2) (with Display Port to VGA converter (contact Dell to know if your configuration supports this output type. On some data Dell part data sheet I saw this converter, but I have no idea if it works)

Converters are sold separately with the system. Nothing is propitiatory so any converter will work. Sadly, you cannot output an image via some additional card, as it's not a video card. Well I am sure they are some devices that does that, but expect to be expensive and have a very mediocre end result, with image delay problems.

    BTW, these

should be a hit or miss. As it depends if the GPU broadcast S-Video/Composite via VGA. I really don't know if the Intel or Nvidia solution does.

This is what you need which should work properly:
