I have a Dell Vostro 1500, with a 2.0 GHz CPU (Core2 Duo), with the latest BIOS (A06) installed.

What is the highest I can go for upgrading this CPU?

With my system configuration (see signature), is there any real benefit to upgrading?

Edit- not sure if my sig file shows up, so here it is.

    Dell Vostro 1500
    CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 (2 GHz)
    RAM - 2x2GB DDR2 667 MHz
    Video - GeForce 8600 GT 256 MB
Hard Drive - Western Digital 320 GB 7200 RPM
Dual Book Vista (32-Bit) and Kubuntu 10.04 (32-Bit)

I would probably say the difference will be minimal unless you're running something that is chewing up a lot of CPU time. The T7250 is lacking L2 cache, but I think the Nvidia 8600 is affected by the Nvidia issue, so I wouldn't put any money into the system. :(

Robin - What "nvidia" issue? Something wrong with the GPU?

And thanks for the info, I was going to spend some money, now just going to keep the CPU that it in there.

I suppose that's a good thing since it means your system has been trouble-free. Unfortunately, not everybody is as lucky.

The Nvidia recall/issue is that many mobile graphics cards have been failing due to a manufacturing defect, and those graphics cards are present in pretty much all of Dell's product lines. The 8400M- and 8600M-based chips are most affected. I've had two D620's fall victim to the issue, but luckily, my D630 has been spared so far (knock on wood).

Here is Dell's announcement of a warranty extension for the affected GPUs with a list of the affected notebooks.

The problem is with the chip packaging which deteriorates due to thermal cycling.
