My Dell Vostro 1500 is not charging while plugged in. I get the following error message- The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation.

I have the Dell 90W adapter. On googling this problem I found out that the problem is with a circuit in the adapter that breaks and the adapter doesn't recognize it as an original Dell. the only solution seems to be to replace the adapter. However I don't want to spend $70+ if its going to happen again in a few months. So I am thinking of buying a generic one on eBay. It does say that the adapter will work on Vostro 1500. But before buying I wanted to see if anyone has any personal experience using a generic adapter. The reason my laptop doesn't charge is cos the computer doesn't recognize it as a Dell adapter so I am unsure of using a generic one.

Also if my battery completely dies, can I still use my laptop if its plugged in? I am sorry if this question sounds silly but I am in kindergarten when it comes to technology.

    Hi,
Is your laptop covered by any warranty? I'd ask Dell Support anyway. Perhaps there is a solution that is cheaper than the 70 USD ;)
The generic PSU from another user might be totally different from that you are offered.
My personal preference would be getting a used PSU (for Inspiron 1520/1720, Vostro 1500/1700 series).

No problem - you can even remove the battery and use your computer (provided you have a working PSU). Only exception: a working battery is required in case you have to update your Bios. But I don't expect any newer Bios for that machine at all.

    1) AC adapter not recognized does not always indicate a problem with the power brick. It may be a problem with the motherboard, and sometimes even the power jack. So just make sure your problem is with the brick before replacing it.

    2) Generic adapters will work. At least, I've never bought one that flat out didn't work.

Whether they will work reliably under stress and over long periods of time... well, that I do not know, and I'm generally not willing to find out.

The centre pin of the adaptor plug carries the signal identifying the adaptor. Is that pin bent or broken off?

You should be able to find a genuine Dell adaptor on ebay for little more than the cost of a generic adaptor.
