Anyone up and running without any problems? I installed W7 (64bit) on my 1700 and I have 1 device it can't find. (Base System Device).

The only drivers left to install should be for the Ricoh SD/MMC card reader, maybe BT, and the NVIDIA graphics (if applicable). I upgraded from Vista to 7 on my old Vostro 1700 (now owned by a friend), and everything went smoothly...

Thanks I think the Ricoh drivers maybe the left over unknown driver. I allowed Windows update to install the Ricoh drivers. I'm going to first install the Ricoh and chipset drivers from my drivers disc first.

I installed the latest nvidia drivers for W7. I must say two things first off if Microsoft had released this OS as Vista they would have banked. Secondly I love the 1700, what a laptop. While I hear many gripe and complain about their Dell laptops this thing is built like a warship.

edit: I downloaded the last updated Ricoh drivers from Dell's website and that did the trick. :)

    Hi there,

I have the Vostro 1700 too and love it.. what I don't love is Dell's shockingly bad number of driver updates - some of the drivers on the site have been updated since "2007", "2008" but Dell just don't bother to update the website. I'm not having much luck getting rid of "base system device" to enable the card reader to work on W7 x64. I know it does work because it worked before when I had the same version of windows running in 30 day grace mode before it was officially released.

I think it's due to the order the drivers are installed. IIRC the chipset drivers have to be installed very first of all. I think I might try and install again from scratch and do that first. Thing is do you use the chipset drivers on Dell's website which are old and out of date or go for the latest for the particular Intel chipset from Intel's website?

At the moment I'm trying the Ricoh card reader driver from the Dell website for Vista x86 for the Vostro 1700. What have you tried using?

Despite what anybody may think, I prefer to use the latest drivers for all my devices whether or not Dell has them released for my system or not.

As the poster above mentioned use the Ricoh drivers from Windows update. That's the solution. You may have to uninstall your old Ricoh drivers first. Either way use WU for the latest driver updates.

Also, I decided to not even bother with Dell's Intel chipset drivers as W7 found my ICH8M drivers.
