Have seen more than enough. Even with well working pads. The HS design is flawed. And only God know if Dell will continue use it in their coming Coffee models. Maybe a small change due 6 cores, but with maybe other flaws on top. And I have following all Aw BGA models from the beginning early 2015. Not a nice trip.

Weirdly enough the DM1 i sent my sister maxes out at 80C on the CPU running 4.5Ghz and 75C on the GTX 1070 (180W) using a Notepal U3. Without any AC running.Last edited: Apr 2, 2018Papusan and Vistar Shook like this. -

The main flaw is the pressure of the heatsink. My heatsink has a good fit but using Nanogrease was not optimal, it was too thick for the heatsink to nicely squeezy it all the way down. When I stress the CPU alone it stays between 60c ~ 65c with the GPU stressed I am around 80c. I really cant complain with these temps. Temperature difference of 3c. -

That might be the reason why at stock without overclock the 1070 in my laptop is still boosting over 1800mhz.
But i own the 15inch version. The 17 has larger fans and should handle the 7820hl well. The ones that i repasted did at least. Also an easier machine to open in my experience. -

150W is desktop 1070, the notebook version is 115-125W.

Also the OP's Alienware would overheat even at 21C room temperature, because he obviously got a bad heatsink.

ignore the battery, you can reduce the wear level by multiple methods.. but ur HS is the main problem.. its not even touching the core points.. otherwise ur idle would be around 40-60 max..

They know what their doing in that, the actions to take to replace a common issue. However they dont know why they are doing it and for w/e reason become arrogant in thinking they know more than its consumer base. In many ways they do, when working on machines in an enterprise. They for some reason carry that mentality outside of the enterprise into individual users.
Its a result of having their "certifications" be open book exams and virtually worthless. I am not a industry leader, but I have various certs in IT. If I wanted worthless fluff on my resume, Dell certs would be my go-to.VICKYGAMEBOY and Vasudev like this. -
@Vasudev @Papusan and not even fixed their old mess yet they are launching newer gen.. so called Alienware Cryo-Tech v2.0, with 50% thinner fan blades and a vapor chamber on the CPU to cool down the higher number of cores more efficiently..

You can check Charge Cycles using Dell ePSA. Run battery test, goto result tab. Afterwards, scroll down and you will see Charge cycles. Typical battery lasts just for 100. MIne died after 20 cycles.

Rather than start a new thread, I may as well ask here if anyone knows a reputable company/person who can do this procedure for me if I purchase a 15 R3 in the UK.
Just saw the r4 was over a thousand pounds more for only the 6 core i7 Vs the 4 core 7700HQ and a fix to the heating issue that shouldn't have been there. Madness. -

These were taken after 1 Hr of web browsing and Downloading. As soon as the download stopped the temps went down.
Also from above image I feel that the core differential issue is not there with my unit, just the thermal paste and pads are not making contact.
What do you guys say?Vasudev likes this. -

Update @Vasudev @VICKYGAMEBOY @Vistar Shook
I had a talk today again with Dell. First I was talking to some lady which was clueless of how to stress test and find the temperatures. She transferred my call to her Manager (according to her). This guy seemed to have knowledge about stuff but then again was a Dell Rep. We connected through their Customer connect and started with Aida 64 stress test and monitoring the temps which obviously sky rocketed to high 90s within seconds. He then asked me to play some games while the stress test was going on, which I did and it was unplayable.
After sometime he checked the temps and said the temps are ok as average temps have not crossed 95c although he himself was observing how the system was throttling but he was adamant to see the average temps exceed above 95 to relate it to hardware issue. He said it is a software issue. I tried to convince him how it was a hardware issue and said that if I can play a game for 2 hours which is not possible in this condition the average temps will increase. Now I have to show him a screenshot of hwinfo where the average temps increase to 95c which is not possible due to thermal throttling as the clock speeds dip to 800 MHz.
Any idea how to do something like this. I was thinking of removing thermal throttling in throttle stop so temps keep on increasing.Vasudev and Vistar Shook like this. -

And according to this http://www.dell.com/support/article...-or-throttling-during-high-cpu-stress?lang=en now I have all the proof:
1. Temps are above 93C average
2. For this processor i.e 7820HK 3.9GHz Clock speed should be maintained, which here is not even close to.Last edited: Apr 4, 2018Papusan, Vasudev and Vistar Shook like this. -

Yeah kind of hard to get average temps over 93 or 95C when the CPU is thermal throttling because it throttles exactly to avoid the high temps. This way Dell gets a free pass....I would say keep insisting that throttling to lower clocks to maintain temps below 93C is not acceptable and that the clocks should stay stable at 3.9GHz, or at least the standard 3.5GHz for all 4 cores (i7-7820HK). Perhaps try AC Origins for over 2 hours on high performance power plan and see what average temps and average clocks are like. I think support should look at average clocks to impose the average temp criteria and also take into account if it is thermal throttling.

Update @rinneh @Vasudev @VICKYGAMEBOY @Vistar Shook @Altairwarz @Mobius 1
I had a talk again today with the Manager. I had shown him the screenshots where the average temps were reaching above 93C and also brought his attention to the fact that the cores were not running at stock speeds. He agreed and said that he will order a replacement for Heatsink and Motherboard and said that these parts will be refurbished.
I think getting them to accept it is kind of a victory.
But what I want to ask is, will the refurbished parts be any better? Since what I feel is that most of the outdated machines are sent to India, so maybe the parts are also the same. I don't want an old heatsink (the CCI version that came with the first batch). What do you guys feel about the refurbished parts?Vasudev, Vistar Shook, Altairwarz and 1 other person like this. -

Also ask them to use paste of your choice. Try to get some higher end Gelid paste, Kryonaut or something like that. Not ICD7 which has too much viscosity and these heatsinks cannot spread the paste that well with the pressure they apply.Vasudev, Vistar Shook and abhay4sengars like this. -
I am using their refurb heatsink with 0 issues.
Like @rinneh said, its due to company policy.Vistar Shook likes this. -

That's quite the experience you had. Dell UK replaced my display unit (webcam issue), heatsink and the motherboard (because of temperatures shooting up to 90C under normal work load), rear panel, and keyboard. And that only took one call with their rep! And I bought a refurbished system off Dell Outlet here. For all practical purposes, I am running a new system! I am super impressed with their customer service. In comparison, Dell India seems to be a complete pain in the neck to deal with.
I am using the same system in India right now, and my temperatures never go above 50C under normal work load (Chrome with a dozen or so tab, solidworks, a couple of excel and word documents) and TS has all cores locked at 3.2. And when I turn on the ac, I do see the temperatures dropping between 40-45C. And I am running it without the cooler, as it is too cumbersome to lug around so I left it at home in UK.Vasudev likes this. -
