Have seen more than enough. Even with well working pads. The HS design is flawed. And only God know if Dell will continue use it in their coming Coffee models. Maybe a small change due 6 cores, but with maybe other flaws on top. And I have following all Aw BGA models from the beginning early 2015. Not a nice trip.

Huehue. ****ing Dilli with its Hot humid dusty weather.

Weirdly enough the DM1 i sent my sister maxes out at 80C on the CPU running 4.5Ghz and 75C on the GTX 1070 (180W) using a Notepal U3. Without any AC running.

Yeah with liquid metal paste, not conventional paste. Ridiculous that liquid metal TIM is almost required in BRAND NEW MACHINES running stock clocks!

I refuse to touch LM, my machine is running on plain Kryonaut.

The main flaw is the pressure of the heatsink. My heatsink has a good fit but using Nanogrease was not optimal, it was too thick for the heatsink to nicely squeezy it all the way down. When I stress the CPU alone it stays between 60c ~ 65c with the GPU stressed I am around 80c. I really cant complain with these temps. Temperature difference of 3c.

Remember a oc'd 7820Hk will stress temp a lot harder. 3.4GHz and below 1v don't produce a lot of heat. Neither should 3.95GHz. And 7820Hk is adverticed for 44x (one core). I think 42x on all 4 cores. Max out the Power limits vs. what Dell put and temp will fly up. A big difference vs. locked down [email protected] and 120w 1070. 44x on all 4 cores shouldn't be a problem on 7820Hk if you didn't get the utter bottom.

My 1070 seems to pull much more than 120watt. More like 150watt. My battery slowly starts to drain under absolute full load. My 240watt psu isnt enough then. 150watt gpu, 45watt cpu, 2nvme drives, the rest of the hardware sounds about right that my it pulls more than that my psu can deliver.

That might be the reason why at stock without overclock the 1070 in my laptop is still boosting over 1800mhz.

But i own the 15inch version. The 17 has larger fans and should handle the 7820hl well. The ones that i repasted did at least. Also an easier machine to open in my experience.

A new vBios wont tax the system with +50w. And I'm not sure you have run P95 and furemark simultaneous. The 7700Hq is fully locked down. Dell can still use a Power cap (not utilize psu's max potentiale) and force missing power from the battery. And the 240w Delta is good for +255w from the wall.

Also the OP's Alienware would overheat even at 21C room temperature, because he obviously got a bad heatsink.

well it pushes 200mhz extra than stock. Probably because my cooling isnt bad compared to the review unit. My gpu is running for the most time between the 60 and 65c it keeps boosting until it reaches the power limit. These gpus arent power efficient above their designed power curve. Once i undervolt my cpu it doesnt drain anymore.

    Depends, how many cycles?

You have to calculate yourself. But if you drain it daily for a year your battery wear is about right.

I keep it plugged in most of the time. I just noticed that my core temps are reaching 98c when just browsing and downloading stuff. I think due to the heat produced internally the battery had started degrading.

ignore the battery, you can reduce the wear level by multiple methods.. but ur HS is the main problem.. its not even touching the core points.. otherwise ur idle would be around 40-60 max..

Dell tech support is a mixed bag for me.

They know what their doing in that, the actions to take to replace a common issue. However they dont know why they are doing it and for w/e reason become arrogant in thinking they know more than its consumer base. In many ways they do, when working on machines in an enterprise. They for some reason carry that mentality outside of the enterprise into individual users.

Its a result of having their "certifications" be open book exams and virtually worthless. I am not a industry leader, but I have various certs in IT. If I wanted worthless fluff on my resume, Dell certs would be my go-to.

Never game on battery since its not good. They will say same thing but you need to say I used Web browser and light stuffs and say runtime is bad and deteriorating.
You can check Charge Cycles using Dell ePSA. Run battery test, goto result tab. Afterwards, scroll down and you will see Charge cycles. Typical battery lasts just for 100. MIne died after 20 cycles.

@Papusan Maybe Dell could have added 50% more fans and LGA chip to hit 5GHz when ambients are below 30C.

Rather than start a new thread, I may as well ask here if anyone knows a reputable company/person who can do this procedure for me if I purchase a 15 R3 in the UK.

Just saw the r4 was over a thousand pounds more for only the 6 core i7 Vs the 4 core 7700HQ and a fix to the heating issue that shouldn't have been there. Madness.

These are the temps I am talking about when idle.
These were taken after 1 Hr of web browsing and Downloading. As soon as the download stopped the temps went down.

Also from above image I feel that the core differential issue is not there with my unit, just the thermal paste and pads are not making contact.

    What do you guys say?

The core differential issue in my opinion is a consequence of re-padding, i had 2c or 3c differential before re-padding which went up to 10c to 12c post re-padding.

kinda weird ur system shows around 7 hours of HWINFO.. but still its just a messy HS.. from my guess. either too much crap stamp paste blocking the heat transfer.. or just the copper is not even touching flat. do a video with hwinfo on.. and upload on youtube.. and share with us.. also that might help incase dell reps want to see.

Crazy temps. To check for core differential, you would need to put an even load on the cores, 100% on all cores, but with those temps just browsing, will be hard to do the test. Definitely have DELL fix this, totally unacceptable and basically unusable.

    Update @Vasudev @VICKYGAMEBOY @Vistar Shook
I had a talk today again with Dell. First I was talking to some lady which was clueless of how to stress test and find the temperatures. She transferred my call to her Manager (according to her). This guy seemed to have knowledge about stuff but then again was a Dell Rep. We connected through their Customer connect and started with Aida 64 stress test and monitoring the temps which obviously sky rocketed to high 90s within seconds. He then asked me to play some games while the stress test was going on, which I did and it was unplayable.
After sometime he checked the temps and said the temps are ok as average temps have not crossed 95c although he himself was observing how the system was throttling but he was adamant to see the average temps exceed above 95 to relate it to hardware issue. He said it is a software issue. I tried to convince him how it was a hardware issue and said that if I can play a game for 2 hours which is not possible in this condition the average temps will increase. Now I have to show him a screenshot of hwinfo where the average temps increase to 95c which is not possible due to thermal throttling as the clock speeds dip to 800 MHz.
Any idea how to do something like this. I was thinking of removing thermal throttling in throttle stop so temps keep on increasing.

Have to say, you guys in India surely have the ****tiest tech support to deal with. Wouldnt say Dell in Holland is perfect but they are far more forthcoming here. Are you going to travel abroad soon? Might worth a shot to try contacting Dell there.

Not really. But I was able to take some screenshots for the satisfaction of the guy. Here are those.
And according to this http://www.dell.com/support/article...-or-throttling-during-high-cpu-stress?lang=en now I have all the proof:
    1. Temps are above 93C average
    2. For this processor i.e 7820HK 3.9GHz Clock speed should be maintained, which here is not even close to.

WTF. When I called them last year they asked me to play a game for 5 mins while running hwinfo or some other monitoring software in the background the temps went to a max of 90 and averaged around 75 after which they themselves told me that my system had a bad heatsink and would need a new one after the heatsink replacement my laptop was still overheating and stuttering so they sent me another heatsink which again failed to solve the problem in the end i just took it upon myself and watched all the disassembly videos on youtube and repasted and re-padded it myself.

Yeah kind of hard to get average temps over 93 or 95C when the CPU is thermal throttling because it throttles exactly to avoid the high temps. This way Dell gets a free pass....I would say keep insisting that throttling to lower clocks to maintain temps below 93C is not acceptable and that the clocks should stay stable at 3.9GHz, or at least the standard 3.5GHz for all 4 cores (i7-7820HK). Perhaps try AC Origins for over 2 hours on high performance power plan and see what average temps and average clocks are like. I think support should look at average clocks to impose the average temp criteria and also take into account if it is thermal throttling.

If it was under full load in a 30c room maybe. But if it isnt under full load it is too high.

I had a talk again today with the Manager. I had shown him the screenshots where the average temps were reaching above 93C and also brought his attention to the fact that the cores were not running at stock speeds. He agreed and said that he will order a replacement for Heatsink and Motherboard and said that these parts will be refurbished.
I think getting them to accept it is kind of a victory. :D
But what I want to ask is, will the refurbished parts be any better? Since what I feel is that most of the outdated machines are sent to India, so maybe the parts are also the same. I don't want an old heatsink (the CCI version that came with the first batch). What do you guys feel about the refurbished parts?

no because the entire design is inherently flawed

No parts are ing eneral refurbished I believe and this is hearsay that they mark parts as refurbished due to tax laws etc? Not sure but in Europe when they ship out parts they are always new and sealed. Check if the heatsink come with thermal paste pre-applied. You will know for sure its new then (probably with plastic sheets on top of it.

Also ask them to use paste of your choice. Try to get some higher end Gelid paste, Kryonaut or something like that. Not ICD7 which has too much viscosity and these heatsinks cannot spread the paste that well with the pressure they apply.

Refurb doesn't really mean its second hand or used junk. Its their marketing trick even I fell for it. After I was fed up I repaired and repasted it myself.
I am using their refurb heatsink with 0 issues.
Like @rinneh said, its due to company policy.

That's quite the experience you had. Dell UK replaced my display unit (webcam issue), heatsink and the motherboard (because of temperatures shooting up to 90C under normal work load), rear panel, and keyboard. And that only took one call with their rep! And I bought a refurbished system off Dell Outlet here. For all practical purposes, I am running a new system! I am super impressed with their customer service. In comparison, Dell India seems to be a complete pain in the neck to deal with.

I am using the same system in India right now, and my temperatures never go above 50C under normal work load (Chrome with a dozen or so tab, solidworks, a couple of excel and word documents) and TS has all cores locked at 3.2. And when I turn on the ac, I do see the temperatures dropping between 40-45C. And I am running it without the cooler, as it is too cumbersome to lug around so I left it at home in UK.

Do you have the same model as mine? If yes then, why have you locked all your cores to 3.2 GHz. It should work well even with all cores at 4 GHz.

I have the AW 13 and not the 15 or 17 version. 13 only comes with 7700HQ. You will find the configuration in my sig.
