To prove my point. Try a GPU only intensive task such as Furmark (don't run this to long, it can break ur GPU over time) or 3dMark etc. You will see that even tho your CPU doens't do anything it gets heated up by the graphicscard to over 90c. -
Update
@Vasudev @Vistar Shook @VICKYGAMEBOY @Mobius 1 @Papusan
So the tech came today and replaced the heatsink and motherboard.
The paste on both the CPU and GPU had dried completely. See the images below.
For now the temps are amazing. I did a stress test on Aida 64 w/o under volt and temps did reach higher 80s but after undervolting they never reached above 82c with 4.1GHz overclock.
Core temp differential is also about 5c within each other. I'll stress more and share a screenshot soon.
@alexnvidia for your post this is the new heatsink that was replaced in my system.

Good temps but can be better. Maybe CPU performance mode can help.

I prayed to God to fix my AW but I had to work on it relentlessly for 6 months to get it patched up and ready for anything thrown at it.Djadit, Vistar Shook and oSChakal like this. -

I could have helped but contacting Dell should be the first thing to do, as others have suggested. The representatives were very helpful even for my inspiron laptop, sure that they will provide better service for AW. Just give 'em a call at 1800-425-2073 its 24x7 btw.

Hey everyone,
Not sure where to post this exactly,
But I need some input from you people (preferably from India)
So, I am planning to buy the Alienware 15 R3 (i7 7820HK, 1080 MQ,120Hz Gsync TN+WVA, 32GB, 1TB SSD, 1TB HDD) that's the only config available here BTW.
Reading about the various issues related to heating I am now a bit skeptical to buy it. Also, nvidia will be refreshing the mobile GPU line-up somewhere around late 2018 according to rumors. I understand that there is always something better on the horizon in the tech-world but should I wait for the new line-up or go ahead with this one. Are the issues really really bad? What I am meaning to ask is what are the odds that I would receive a faulty machine?
Also worth noting are the ambient temps ~ 40-45 C. So I have been experiencing temps around 88-95C for CPU(undervolted & overclocked) and ~60-78C for GPU(overclocked) when pushed hard for couple of hours while gaming and using a cooling pad also, I have repasted using cooler master maker nano twice. Will the temps on the 15 be somewhat similar all things considered? Or would I run into more problems?
I currently own a lenovo y50 with gtx860m 4gb maxwell and i7 4710HQ it's been going strong but now it's down to 30fps 720p.
I have been gaming on 768p for all the while I have had this laptop so switching over is a big step up for me. (I am pretty comfortable gaming at 900p as long as I get solid 60fps)
Also, a desktop is a no-go since, I am on the move most of the time.
So is making a switch now (within a month) wise? or should I wait for something else ? I am really into how the alienware looks and also I see no attractive option(look of the laptop matters alot apart from just config, If I am buying a 3800$ machine It should look the part instead of a typical 1000$ laptop look IMO) in the price range either. BTW it costs around 2.57 Lakhs INR here(3,824.16 US Dollar) for the config I mentioned.
Any input is welcomed coz now I am pretty confused.
EDIT: planning to buy it from a dell exclusive store locally from lucknow. I am a final year student living in NCR so Indian members would know exactly what ambient temps I am talking about.
I hope it's not annoying if I tagged you guys

AW simply can't hold up at stock clocks and with our climate it'll worsen as time goes on. If you are comfortable with pricing I'd suggest you import the laptop or ask someone in the US or abroad to bring it. Its simply a waste to pay double the price that throttles after a day of minimum usage. So, personally I'd recommend you buy from Clevo laptops from Hidevolution, Xotic PC or GentechPC w/ Prema BIOS that works as intended.
AW battery has high wear level after light usage or medium usage. While gaming it gets too hot and wear level increases while charging and discharging.
Maybe you can look at MSI GT73VR if looks/features are important. Clevo don't have build quality and looks but they perform like intended. It all depends what you want.
Personally, I won't lay a finger on Dell Alienwares anymore.
@judal57 and @VICKYGAMEBOY can shed more info about AW. We're still finding it difficult to maintain good thermals on 15 r2 even after 2 years. So you get my point right?Vistar Shook, msri15603 and Altairwarz like this. -
As for importing AW nope, can't happen anytime soon.
Build Quality is a top priority because I don't know what rivalry laptop hinges have with me :/
You have an r2, from what I've been reading so far on other threads isn't the r3 more "stable" in terms of cooling, like there are more chances of getting a much better machine.
I have really spun my mind around AW 15 and I might sound like I am defending it, but please bear with me.
I am also pretty skeptical with importing laptops from Xotic PC and the likes simply because of after sales support and lack of any experience in the same whatsoever.
Would I be looking at the temps similar to my Y50? if that's the case I'm completely fine with it coz 3 years and no issues so far. Would that be the case with AW or would it degrade into just plain unusable crap?
Thanks!Vasudev likes this. -
You see build quality will be non-issue because the 15 r3 can't perform to fullest potential unless you repaste/repad. Even there are lot of issues at SW side where in 15 r4 gets new AlienFX GUI v2.0 which is astronomically faster and better.
Don't import it since it'll be expensive than India pricing.
Ask BeastDragon Forever.
I personally recommend you GT73VR or a Clevo F5 Tornado or 16L-1080 with 7700k and 1080GTX.Vistar Shook and msri15603 like this. -
I am aware of the r4 although there is no hope it will be launching in India anytime soon.
Is the lighting more improved or it's just the software? -
Also, something interesting over at Dell India.
The 15's description has been updated to that of the core i9 one's with cryotech v2 and new command center i.e. the 15 R4.
Although the spec sheet is still the same 7th gen i7 and max Q. What's even more interesting is that when I click on Buy online it shows as out of stock so, if I am getting this right the R4 is hitting India within a couple of days right? Win - win I guess? Excited AFVasudev likes this. -

Please check this link here the same specd alienware 15 r3 is listed as r4 and even the drivers support page also shows drivers for 15 r4. Can anyone please check if the new command center works for alienware 15 r3?
I have ordered mine and it will reach me within a week so if anyone can check before-hand it would be great!
Just click on drivers and support from the product page and it will take you to r4 also the url says r4 but same spec sheet. WTF?

Better to get the laptop from aboard in a backpack.
Anyone in India that provides repasting and repadding services like iunlock?
