Whilst us UK customers are awaiting our 13's, would you lovely people post some pics of that little stunner of a screen called OLED please?

(Just after some screen pron!, games web browser etc)

UK peeps are also waiting for their 15s :(

And the elaborate and wonderful customer centric training of Dell's reps is the cherry on the cake. I have just had a splendid half an hour long conversation with a lady who said that the product (AW 15) may just go EOL and may never be delivered to me o_O

So would that mean a new order would be placed and a new build would be sent to you?

Hmmm, I'll see what they say by Thursday.

Hopefully, they will replace the batteries on our 13's at couriers then ship them out....... Hopefully. Want to get gears 4 on!

I do hope you hear back something positive soon, they obviously have severe internal staff communication problems.

    1. Presets so the fan profile is set to max cooling.

    2. Yes and no, if it's peak temp it's ok, if it's the average temp it's too high. Lowering the temp will drastically increase the lifespan of components.

    3. The software doesn't speak to the bios settings as of now, so setting it up like the question you had in post 1 is the best thing to do. Apparently there is a bios fix in the works for fan profiles.

    4. Most laptops with mobile processors will have the igpu. Default in the AW13 the nvidia card is in use. This can be edited in the nvidia settings.

    1. Ok, but what is the difference between CPU and FAN performance setting?
    2. It was the peak, tough it seems a bit high to me. I'll let you know how it changes after undervolting.
    3. Thanks
    4. Ok, but does that mean optimus can be enabled?

Sorry if some questions look noobish but I was mainly a console gamer for the last 10 years :p

    Slight update from Dell.

Spoke to lovely woman earlier who again apologised for the delay.

She stated that they currently have around 1000 UK orders to work though (due to battery issue) and that my order number has flagged on the system as a priority and work will commence on it this week. With potential shipping Friday.
Obviously she couldn't confirm dates but stated that Dell techs are on route to the couriers with new batteries to replace.
There will 100% be an update by end of play Friday as to what's going on regarding shipping.

((One slightly worrying thing was that she stated Dell have recognised the issue regarding batteries but said that the issue is the not charging past 60%...... I told her the workaround from this and she replied (slightly confused) that the dell techs will be carrying the work out)......
So does this mean new batteries or turning off the service setting to charge past 60%. Wasn't really clear on that one))

Anyway, if that is the actual battery issue then we should definitely see orders being released this week.

I can't see them replacing batteries for the not charging past 60% issue? Surely?

Charging past the 60% just requires to disable manufacturing mode.

Exactly my point. I told her this and she agreed, but said the techs are replacing the batteries / resolving the issue?
A tad confusing, but if they are just disabling the manufacturing mode then happy days as to when we will get out orders.

Most don't, but the previous two female Dell reps have been open and honest as to what's going on with the information they have.

Just hoping that the issue gets resolved this week and get some decent gaming in next week......

This battery issue is getting interesting ..

So I checked it yesterday with HWinfo64; the wear level in mine is @ 5%. I remember seeing 2-3% in my Razer Blade 14 back in 2014 and was a little concerned. Not sure if there is some sort of % discharge operational envelope that is allowed on their new batteries [could be possible, as those are stress-tested during their manufacturing process and perhaps this is where that discharge wear level occurs ?]

    1) don't own yet, but i wouldn't worry about changing modes - Dell defaults to a quieter fan profile, which is vastly preferable to making your machine a vacuum. I can't for the life of me understand why so many gamers buying laptops put up with awful as hell fan noise (55+ dB)
    2) Absolutely positively NO issue with these temps - people keep passing bad info around here. The CPU has a max limit of 100C - this is per intel SPECIFICATIONS. The CPU can actually ride at just below 100C 24/7, for years. YOU will never max out your CPU to this duty cycle (the % of time you are maxing the CPU). In general manufacturers will aim for some gap between the max temps and Tmax, so 88 is 12 degrees away.

Let me continue to rant - because I'm tired of heresay. Every Alienware forum - gets clogged with supposed "experts" who posit about "safe" temperatures. It's about 99% bad information. The only real issues with Alienware laptops are "thermal shutdown" where you get BSODs. As far as I can tell, Dell originally had the wrong spec temp in it's BIOS. The other issue would be SIGNIFICANT throttling - which I haven't seen either (observed minor brief throttling, usually disabling turbo on a core). I'll be the first to accuse Alienware of a bad manufacturing process that does a piss poor job applying good thermal paste - this cooling system is capable of "better temps" in that there is a decent gap between the CPU core temps and Tmax so that you do not get throttling of any major type.

Regardless, in all my research, the AW designs are not hitting "unsafe temperatures" as it arrives from the factory. The "core differential" is generally a non issue and is dependent on the program being used.

Let me say this one last time...if your AW hit 99C, had no significant throttling that had a major impact to performance, and you gamed 24 hours a day at that temperature, your CPU would easily last 3-5 years without missing a step.

+1. All very accurate information. Although for reasons I can't explain, I have found it mildly entertaining seeing everyone here underclock, undervolt and tape ice to the bottom of their laptops because it was hitting 79C. Placebo effect at its finest.

Here's a perfect example of the bad advice from folks at Reddit:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/comments/5i26uv/do_i_need_to_repaste_occt_after_30mins/

That guys temps after running OCCT are excellent and he needs to do absolutely NOTHING whatsoever. Yet the completely uneducated advice in that thread is..."oh yeah dude, definitely need a repaste, look at that core differential". Also, encouraing undervolting is a terrible thing as well. If you don't know if your temps are good or bad, you should not be doing anything else to your machine.

    Load of crock!

I thought m.2 was form factor, pcie is the protocol. So you can have an m.2 that is sata or pcie. Pcie should be faster.

It should be since it's using nvme. Sata is topped out at 10mbit. I've heard of nvme that can use 4 lanes of pcie 3.0 theoretically can do 32mbit. As I said it's theoretical since my 950 pro does get hot and will throttle.

What I don't know is how many lanes this laptop has. I know sky lake on desktop can provide up to 20 lanes from the cpu itself. Then the chipset can provide more. Perhaps someone with better knowledge can chime in with more precise answers.

So, if I am getting this right @Tichy_, ELCobrito and myself [as probably many other users] had their systems in maintenance when delivered, and the batteries now are at 5% wear off level.

On the other hand @jedolley ‘s system wasn’t and his battery is currently at 0% wear state.

I had noticed mine at 2% a few days back. But not that worried. Because batteries are truly calibrated till its run down before a full charge anyway. I just don't know if it take a few times of doing that. Failing that I'm debating to send it back. I dont personally think I got a bad unit. I just reordered another unit. And I actually fear it won't at least be as good as this one.
And I actually believe that the first few shipments tend to get better inspections rather than later orders because manufacturers are rushing the orders to keep up at that point. Now I see why there's a 30th estimate delivery for it. 1000 backlog orders.

Totally agree. Although it seems that there is some sort of a weird pattern ..
Will give it a couple of full solid discharges and monitor battery's performance more closely, including its ware off levels. My AW13 would mostly remain plugged-in anyway, but it wouldn't hurt knowing that our battery batch is reliable.

Well hell guys, at least we switched from CPU temps for now )))

Something really odd just happened, my laptop just started blowing black smoke out the rear right vent - smelled like burning electronics, toxic.

Immediately powered off, checked BIOS, only cpu performance mode is enabled, fan performance is disabled. No time to open it up right now, will do so tonight.
