On my ips I disabled iGPU and I've got no stuttering at all.
I've yet to try it on an external monitor though.

Yes, this "fix", better said a dirty workaroud, works for the windows UI. Keeps the nvidia card constantly alive by simple directx api calls. But therefore the card isn't even idle most of the time. It's also a lot in "RUN" mode. Can be checked by the optimus check tool.

But battery drain is there...of course it has to be. In my tests it went from ~4hours to 2,5-3hours. And fans spin more often and higher. Not significantly, but noticable if you pay attention.

If you could test on an external monitor by draging some windows around and see if the "animation/movement" is REALLY fluid as it should be and also if fullscreen video, e.g. youtube in chrome works. And don't reboot before attaching a monitor to test this.

That would be awesome! Thanks man

Either way, nvidia or microsoft has some work to do... As more and more laptops hit the market with this issue, the unhappy customer rating goes wild.

For sure, something will happen in the future, but as said it's not my only complain. If it was, I maybe would live with it till it's fixed. But with all issues I faced, I'm not willing to take the risk for this amount of money. Maybe I got too old in the meantime, but I expect such issues to be checked and fixed at this price point, before selling a product.
And I don't care who is responsible. Microsoft, nvidia, intel,... I just expect that this BASIC functions like Windows UI rendering and external monitor handling work out of the box in 2016.

Short Update to my AW13 R3 + Oculus + SteamVR issue.

SteamVR didn't detect my Oculus hardware *A essential component is missing*. Games with Oculus software went just fine.

It was an Nividia Optimus problem. Starting SteamVr with the NVIDA GPU solved the problem!

    Bugger.

Just been told that there was a vehicle breakdown so that's why the package arrived late at the local hub.
Have been told that they have put the order to be delivered before noon.
    So that's something eh.

Also did a clean install. For me it didn't helped. Not with Alienware provided drivers, not with newest drivers from intel/nvidia, not with Windows WHQL drivers. Alienware/fresh install from USB stick. No combination worked correctly.

I uninstalled all the apps that didn't come natively w/windows including ones you couldn't uninstall using the add/remove program tool (e.g. xbox app). Downloaded 4525 intel drivers like you, and the November build for GPU. Completely removed all alienware apps.

Did a clean install using the windowsrefreshsetup tool (external download) and wiped the drive clean.

That's unfortunate, but I agree. For the price that the user-end is paying for a premium product, they need to get the basics right starting w/making sure things work on an acceptable enthusiast's level.

    Hello,
tried to search but no result on this.. this new m13xR3 can mount a normal hdd 2,5 caddy? I have a 2tb ssd on my m13x and i want to be sure before upgrade model if I cannot use my old disk.
This could be possible on m13xR3? -> ?

Ok nvm.. i just saw.. till R2 possible, on R3 no coz thinner and they removed the option for 2,5".....damn. 2TB in ssd m2, will cost around 1400€ crazy.
And the M15XR3 seems the only alternative but so big compared to 13.

Remember you can put m.2 sata speed drives in. 2 1tb in a raid like the mx300 from crucial will set you back 650-700 euros

It's for real on ALL 1060 laptops using Optimus as far as I can tell. IPS seems to have a switch to NV-only, which stops the problem (stutter comes from switching) but kills battery.

Eh thx, i will valutate all.. that is an option too; but now im on 850pro ssd, going back to sata will be sad :(.. Another option it's to buy a m13xR2, but I dunno if my vendor will propose me that model anymore.

It is, but you can live with it and hope for a fix in the future. But if you plan to use an external monitor, as I did, for work at home... no chance you'll be happy. At least for me. Maybe mDP is better than HDMI. Only have an HDMI monitor.

Why wouldn't you just pick up two 1 TB M.2 sticks? That's only $500 (US dollars). I picked up a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB stick for 250 recently, came with Watch Dogs 2 recently. I'm sure other deals exist.

You know, I remember a couple years ago, i had major issues with tearing/stuttering on a brand new Dell monitor I had hooked up to my nvidia powered desktop PC. I thought for sure it was either faulty, or Vsync just wouldn't work at all in games. The tearing was insane... Turns out that there was a setting on the monitor in the service menu that enabled some sort of higher bandwidth input. I only found it by stumbling around for it. If I was home, I would show a picture of it. I believe this was connected over HDMI at the time as well. Regardless, once enabled, the monitor worked beautifully after that.

Also - I do know that sometimes the cable matters - have you tried various cables?

I'm really happy that I'm not the only one facing this external monitor window stuttering. So I'm not crazy. Are you people here don't use a laptop on external monitors from time to time? Especially because it's 13".

But glad it's also present on mDP. So it was the correct decision to send it back for me

My AW13 R3 has a 5% battery wear already. In comparision, my 4 year old Lenovo Y500 (which is basically on the charger all day long) has only 6.2% battery wear. Should I ask Dell to change it?

I tried different cables, yes. But also the same monitor works perfectly on my old laptop. Checked all settings in monitor and also in driver (refresh rate, color depth, etc.). As said, it works for some time if you reboot with the monitor already attached.

My experience is that the switching steal nearly as much battery as the fix I provided. I might loose 15-20 minutes of battery but the stutter is gone. It's an easy fix, at least until it's sorted. Dell is aware of this issue and I highly doubt they'll just sit and watch their revenues go down the drain for something that's nvidia's fault...

I would be relaxed about it. The laptop is awesome in every way! It has one problem witch is a problem for all Optimus driven 1060 laptops, and it's fixable as discussed in this thread. Let's just hope nvidia or Microsoft sorts this out quickly. And you can use the quick fix I provided if the stuttering is bothering you.

There is a lot of stuttering problems on the 10 series card. You probably had one of those, but the Optimus stuttering is because of the switching between the gpu's. So in this case they're different problems. I fixed mine by using the fix I mentioned earlier, and that exe file just keeps the nvidia gpu as the default card...

So I spoke with Dell again this afternoon.... to confirm the laptop will be here tomorrow or Thursday as my EDD was changed to 12/22. First they apologized and said "there is an unexpected delay in the order". But assured me it will arrive this week. Then when pressed to find out if the unit has arrived in the USA yet.... he conceded that it has not yet arrived here. I just don't know what form of transportation they are using that makes them think it will arrive at my doorstep in two days, when it's not yet in my country. At this point I don't know what to believe. And quite honestly, I really don't care when it arrives. At the moment I am quite happy with my GS43; but I only have 14 days left to return it in the event I like the 13 R3 more. So the more time I have to compare and contrast would be beneficial. I guess I'm more flustered with the fact it feels like I'm being either lied to or given the run-around by Dell. Which clearly is a byproduct of them generally having no idea either.

I dunno man, I got mine with 5% wear off level right out of the box and this s..t now
I highly doubt its a "bedding-in" process, and honestly - hadn't seen anything like this with laptop/notebook batteries.

Emailed tech support, waiting for a response.

In the mean time, I think I've counted 3 users [@mobelea , @Tichy_including myself] with a similar issue - received the systems with 5+ % wear off levels and now down to 10%.

I'm wandering if its a faulty batch of batteries we got in ..
Will let you all know how it develops with the support.

I like the system A LOT, but for the first time I am considering to have it returned for a refund ..

Was yours too in maintenance mode and 5% off when you received it ?

    UPDATE:

So, called in Order Return Support @ Dell in regards to my battery issue.
They are sending me alike replacement unit [should be in 7-10 days - this is with OLED configuration. Don't know, maybe they keep some of those on a reserve for support or something, as the current production time indicates 30-40 days with OLED option selected]

In the meantime, will continue to monitor the current rig to see how the battery's charge-hold capability's degrading

Hmm my fans started reving up and down like crazy. When I went into diagnostic (F12) it came back with a fan error. Removed my extra rubber feet and the diagnostic completed without an error. Weird stuff... Are these new fans really so fragile to what positions the base is kept?

Got the same BS. Contrary to promises from their VP/GM, it does not seem that the month-long backlog of 13r3s will ship by today. I don't think they have a clue where their stuff is at any given moment.

Well as regarding batteries. I think mine was 2% out the box. But as I've let it run down a few times I decided to check if it's draining. But no. It's sorted itself out. Full capacity as I'd expect from a few usages draining it completely I may add.
Also I'd like to add I've had the unit since the 5th.
