Think the new Doom is in the steam sale. Once Ive got Steam to resurrect my ancient account for me (dont ask) might crack that out, cant wait to see how it looks on this screen.

Nice. How are your temps while playing demanding games like Witcher 3 or something?

It's amazing. Got it for 11quid.
    Everything ultra - stunning!
Think it's around 90fps all maxed at 1080 (roughly)

After repaste. GPU is around 70. Does creep to 74 when it really goes for it.
(still waiting for the repaste to settle down)

    CPU is around 70 aswell.

Fan noise has reduced but still a tad loud.

Not Using any performance mode as they are all cak on my system. Far too loud.

Before repaste, how were your temps?

Also, is the oled known for light bleed or that's only for FHD 1920 1080?

To my knowledge light bleed is non existant on oled due to it being oled. Each pixel is individually lit.
    Unlike led. Being edge lit.

    Temp before we're 92cpu and 89gpu I think.

Repaste and undervolt sorted it out.
Plus main reason was to quieten the bloody fans.

Is it really easy to repaste on the 13? Do you need to remove the motherboard?

Really simple process and motherboard stays in!
See back a few pages I put a copy of a written guide.
Took me half hour and that was really taking my time.
I rekon ten minute job from now on.

    Yup.
    Honestly really easy.
Suprised theres not an actual video guide on it yet.

There's the reddit guide I posted a few pages back.

Just search for repaste in this forum and you'll see it.

Take your time and you cant go wrong.

All 13 screws are the same (the 14th screw is the near the ssd, bit smaller) so you can't mix any up.

They must have done this to help the techs.....really simple.

So a Dell tech came today that was supposed to repaste my AW13 but didn't. He instead blamed Windows for the freezing or BSOD I was getting. He used his USB linux bootable and ran some tests. The temps in his tests reached 97c on the CPU and said the laptop did not freeze so there's nothing wrong with it :(

I told him about the bad thermal paste and heatsink design and he didn't seem to wanna repaste bec. he thinks there's nothing wrong with it based on his tests. I didn't bother asking him to do it, i will just do it myself.

here's the thermal paste that Dell sent to be used [IMG]

One thing I would advise is, take time separating the cover after the 14 screws have been removed.
I used a thin bendable plastic card. Bit thinner than a bank card) to shim the cover off.
Just that there's a few clips you don't want to snap.

Other than that. Piece of cake :)

Do I need to remove the ribbons? Did you have to bend the heatsink?

Also, what is the build date on your unit?

    No, just the battery connector.

Bend the heatsink? Hell no, they lift right off.

Not sure, build was the 27th i think. I'll be wave to check later on.

No, I got in before the shortage of oled in uk.

    Here,..... The guide again.....

5 screws to remove bottom cover

    Unplug the battery

1 screw for wireless card (don't have to disconnect)

1 screw for each solid state drive

    Remove memory

Rear I/O cover: 2 screws and two clips, should slide off

14 screws to remove the base cover

Use spudger to help remove base cover

    Unplug CPU/GPU fans

Remove the heatsink assembly screw in sequential order

Remove chunky paste using a spudger from heatsink

Remove the rest of the grease on GPU, CPU and heatsink and clean up that mess.

    Apply paste

Follow these steps in reverse starting at 10

Still get loud under heavy gaming sessions but bearable. (a lot better than stock)

Anyone having problems w/the brightness slider not working? I'll adjust it and it won't change the panel's brightness setting (locked at 100%)

    • Tried reinstalling intel drivers (4542)
    • Disabling/Enabling Generic PNP monitor in device manager
    • Made some registry key changes

None of it worked. Wonder if I disabled something in services that's botching up windows 10.

    You managed to sort this?
I remember reading on here that someone disabled the integrated graphics, and that the 1060 doesn't allow brightness control.

Bit of a long shot, but maybe worth checking that it hasn't been disabled by accident?

Does anyone have rise of the tomb raider and tried it on this laptop? I could swear before reformatting and having stock drivers and the game at high preset I had 60-70 fps. Now with new install and latest drivers I'm struggling to get 60!!! Reviewers had 89 fps... every other game seems perfectly fine. And no there's been no update to the game itself. Both runs with vs off and max performance...

My mistake! With dx12 enabled I'm up to 60-70 fps with fxaa and vs off. High settings preset and slight overclock on gpu.

So I think I found a stable undervolt at -0.140V. I ran OCCT + Prime95 + Unigine Heaven for 5+ hours. Max CPU temp was 85C and GPU got up to 93C. This is before a repaste and without any performance settings enabled.

150 MHz on core. 78 Celsius on rise of the tomb raider after an hour. Metal repasted and -125 undervolt on CPU. Still I might have a fan defect though it's the CPU fan.

I'm thinking the same with my fan. Not sure yet though, will have to run some tests and keep an eye on it.

78 with metal paste and that OC.
I thought that metal paste was meant to give ridiculously low Temps? Like 60 when gaming?
Or is it that TR is that demanding?

Uninstall the intel oled driver and reinstall it via dell support driver page until the brightness control works.

It's a ridiculous demanding game, also a good gaming session is a far better test of the gpu temp than firestrike and the likes. 78 was max temp and I live in the cold north with fire in oven inside and high ambient temp.

Sc2 on 2560p and everything maxed with vs off = 66 Celsius max temp.

Do you also have the start/stop session with the CPU fan? Mine has stopped this behavior in some cases. But got a tech incoming 5th of January to change battery and have a look on the fans. Will not do anything more to the cooling solution before I know if it's a replacement or fix on the AW13 I have.

    Very nice

Yeah been hammering doom and gears for a while. Low 70's max isn't too bad on mine. Fan noise could do with further reduction but really happy with the performance and portability of this little beast.

Put on elite dangerous last night, finding games have a new lease of life with the oled.
    Just looks stunning!

I recieved my aw 13 r3 oled 32gb ram yesterday and when i installed geforce experience computer crashed with blue screen, now it shows error 43 near gtx card. I tryed everything what nvidia and dell support told me but still error 43 after clean install. I guess the card is faulty or tge motherboard. Have anyone experienced this and what eould you recommend, get a replacement or refund ? The machine itself is nice

They aren't meant to come out.
Once loose, you have to pop the cover off.
There are little clips holding it in.

Wierd you should say that as I thought the same when listening to Spotify.
Great sound, clarity and miss are excellent, really impressed with the speakers.

For me I had game mode selected instead of music in the aliensound fx editor app.

Not much difference as you can manually set it to whatever you want (be it bass boost or clarity etc)

Anyways, set it to music and it's fine now.
Game for gaming and it's fine.

Not sure what the actual issue is/was but worked for me.

Think it could have potentially been too much bass boost out of the box.

Or reinstall drivers, that always helps ;)

So far it looks like the battery is holding steady at 5% wear so, unless that starts to degrade quickly, that's not the end of the world. It looks like temperatures are maxing out in the low 70s and the most variation I've seen is 5c, usually it's 0-1c, so I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble of re-pasting. After this weekend I'll post more detailed numbers.

    Honestly, leave it alone mate!
Seems like you've got a belter there.
    Not worth repasting.

    Great Temps!

Don't go off what's said about repasting, it's not needed in some cases.
My Temps were high 90's and fan noise was crap so decided to go for it.
    Worked for me.

    Your Temps are spot on!

    Enjoy!

    Amazing this fixed it.

    1. Uninstalled OLED drivers
    2. Installed OLED drivers
    3. Rebooted

Even with good temps, you will have to repaste eventually. The Dell paste gets dry and degrades quickly. Probably lasts 1 year max (on gaming machine)

I think it is best not to wait

Might as well through something good in there.

True about the Dell paste being dry.

    Depends on experience.
    Your Temps are great.
If you've never repasted before I'd be inclined to leave it until you feel comfortable enough to take her apart. :)

Think I've read this before, but can't remember: What are everyone's consistent frame rates on Doom 1440p ultra?

Edit: Also there's diagonal screen tearing as some users reported only on 1080p. If you up it to 1440p it goes away
