IC diamond is really good paste, but it leaves scratches on Die and heatsink, for some it doesnt matter, for some it matters, personally i would use if its just one time paste job, unlike me every month i keep changing, test something.. so it wont suit my purpose.. there is also a old paste named Cooler Master Nano, i found it out localy, which gave me same temps like IC diamond.. on my desktop rig. i was just testing that paste..

I don't know if you have tried this yet, but you could try to undervolt using throttlestop or xtu

Hey bro, as u said that some intel thermal framework drivers dont cause the issue, can u please link me to the thread where everything is being discussed and also let me know about the thermal framework drivers that are not causing the issues? and yeah today the service took place and they replaced my motherboard with a refurbished i7 4710hq motherboard. Now , the first thing i had to test was the throttling issues, so i just turned on games and sadly all games started throttling. i am so pissed of about that, so instaly i complained to dell about that and they are sending another motherboard. so first of all i would like to ask u that, is the term refurbished bad?? are u using any refurbished parts? secondly this throttling issue with these motherboards is making me so angry! wtf is wrong with dell?? and also intel, coudnt they have just put a heat sink on pch chip from factory?? dont they test anything out before selling??

first off refurbished is common everywhere, even on other brands, second intel DPTF varies from driver to driver, the one on Dell Website is the most stable.. i've tested for skylake, im not sure about haswell, may be @judal57 can let us know which version he is using, and regarding PCH, intel doesnt have anything to do with this, it was dell engineering team who PCH on passive cooling code without a small heatsink, that too with a closed backplate, these are minor design flaws, but somehow impacting 25% of customers, specially the one who bought 980M.. just check on alienware 13/15/17 main page, thread started by judal..

The whole package from Dell is the problem. Firmware and BGA... 6700Hq should have been removed completely as options. A total unnecessary BGA. Nor is it cheaper to acquire for Dellienware than the less Crippled 6820BGA. 6700Hq is one of the worst i7 in history!! Dell/other OEM's will only milk more money from their customers with the two BGA options in their laptop configuration!!

I have the 6700HQ and I have 0,0 issues with it. Its a perfectly fine CPU for a laptop. It has zero throttling, it runs fairly cool, it always keeps its boost clock? So what is wrong with it apart from that it is a chip that cannot be overclocked?

BGA is LGA is only different in terms of mounting (again).

It's pretty amazing. All your Echo models had no throttling problems. While others swim in trouble or whatever. Whether it is hideous PCH temp, burned AC input or processor throttling. You are lucky bro... Why should people pay more for 6820Hk vs 6700Hq? Even all previous low end mobile i7 could OC 2 bin!! http://ark.intel.com/compare/88970,88967,88969

6700HQ is perfectly fine, they are also providing options for 6820HK.. Yes if 6820HK was standard for gaming laptop from other competitors too. then i wouldnt say anything.. but ASUS, MSI, GIGABYTE, RAZER, even Clevo uses 6700hq.. Industry works like that.

Give me any data of 6700hq's throttling in AW machines. I am waiting.....

My machine is not unique, you are just cherry picking cases and act like this is the case for everyone. I can cherry pick Clevo, Asus etc bad cases too.

Ten to hundred thousands of laptops are sold if it is was so problematic these forums would be flooded (Yes I do believe that gamer centric buyers do know enough about their machines to know when something is wrong).

Those prices you mention come from a source which is not Intel. Who says it is correct. Also the Geforce 1060 gpu is almost the same price to manufacture as the1070 while the latter is more expensive. This is just how business works.

I did not mean that Dell is worse than other OEM's when it comes to pricing. I'm pretty sure Dell and all other OEM's don't pay Intel much more for 6820 vs 6700hq. Same **** with 6820hq. But OEM's prices these 6820 quite high vs 6700Hq... And 6820hq should have been the entry i7 model, and not the weaker 6700hq. This low end i7 should have been removed completely as options from ALL ODM/OEM's notebook hardware configurator.
It is Intel who recommend OEM's the customer Price for these BGA models.
Intel recommend the same price for 6820Hk vs. 6820Hq and 6700Hq.

The i7 6700hq isnt a weak cpu at all and trumps pretty much most previous gen desktop i7s. You overstate things yet again. The hq cous can run on a cheaper h chipset btw the hk cous require the more expensive z chipsets for overclocking.

If Dell and others would use a different motherboard for 6820Hk... Yes. But this is not the case as I know.
Here at home charge Dell and other resellers +120 US Dollar more for 6820 vs. 6700hq. Quite tragic, when Intel recommend the same price on both!!
Only i5-6300HQ is worse than an i7 6700Hq. Highly recommend this also? I don't think so

6700HQ is lesser in every department than the 6820HK

why should you buy a 6700HQ for the price of a 6820HK then? (they're both the same price)

+ $ 120 USD are all too much anyway. Intel itself says they can sell for the same price. This reflects a bit what Intel selling their chips for.

Anyone able to get 4k at 60hz/fps from mini displayport to hdmi 2.0? I still havent had any luck, I did buy a Graphics amp so I can someday purchase a 1080 and do some serious 4k gaming but the 980m would play most of my older games ie fallout3/nv/borderlands/bioshock remastered all at 4k 60fps .. they all look great at 4k/30hz but 30fps just doesn't cut it.

hi, for me throttlestop dint work, on my R1 model with 4720HQ, i mean with 6 different set of motherboard, ive tried with few different Undervolt / driver settings, for some it may have helped, i tried using TS 8.0 beta 2.. it holds 3.4ghz only for 3mins, after that it still drops either to 1.6ghz to 800mhz.. this is my case..

Throttlestop doesn't with with Skylake and Windows 10 anymore. New controls Intel introduced (SST), that we cannot disable on the 15R2 as far as I know.

I've been having issues with my 15 R2 LAN ports. Everytime I plug in the LAN, the system freezes, nothing responds will I put it to sleep and then turn it back on.

    Is this a known issue?

Unfortunately, this "feature" was enabled with the Anniversary update of Windows 10. I noticed it immediately - and couldn't figure out for the life of me why I couldn't get throttle stop to do anything. Then I found out that the update and lack of bios options pretty well screwed me. I could drop back to factory, but then I lose adblock in Edge, and Halo Forge.

Hey bro, i understand what you said. Can you please tell me what value if vccin should be kept for best performance in i7 4720hq?
Also please tell me should i use clock modulation or not in throttestop? What are the best settings in throttestop? And also, in settings, throttestop offers 3.8 overclock on all cores! How is that possible when into xtu offered 3.8 only on a single core?

    Hello! Windows setup question here.
I nuked and reinstalled Windows 10 from the Microsoft ISO (downloaded from MS site) - size ~ 3.4 GB.

Recently, I got the DELL official ISO for AW R2 recovery - size ~ 6.4 GB.

Question: Would using the DELL image be more stable / better customized for the AW R2 or the set-up I have is just fine?

Has anyone tried the DELL ISO and noticed any differences? And the major difference in size is it due to the recovery partition files or something else?
    Any tips welcome!

I bought my Alienware R2 in April, and with the gift card/cash back from Dell Reward, I just bought a P2715Q monitor. Dell sale representative forgot to tell me however that the two do not connect since the Alienware 15 R2 doesnt have a miniDP port.
    • What are my options to use the 4k display of the laptop onto the monitor?
    • Should I return the monitor, and if so, which should I choose to work well with an Alienware R2 15?
    Thanks in advance

    Hello AW15 R2 co-owners...
I have a question about the AW R2 Audio Quality. Having previously owned the XPS 15 (which had a sub-woofer), I find the SQ on this machine to be lagging in more ways than one.

Some Q's from me on this please.

    1. The Recon SB panel seems fancy to try but for some reason, I am unable to find any difference in bass post any tweaks in the settings. Especially in the stock speakers.
    The headphone does make some difference. Could the speakers be faulty? I have come across this lately as I took out some time to do some binge watching (used Potplayer);

    2. Can any one suggest any external woofers which are small enough to carry and use, and which don't need external power?

    3. Will something like THIS and THIS work or be helpful?

    Any suggestions welcome as always!

    Thanks,
    C

    Hey Ckhurana

    Here's my opinion....

Laptop speakers are always underwhelming, only some are less so. Years ago I had a Dell Studio 17 (one of the first i7 laptops to market, loads of throttling!) and that came with a JBL (Branded) speaker setup with a sub. I thought it would be great but I quickly realised that in anything other than the perfect conditions, it was rubbish. Doing anything other than watching YouTube was pretty much a disaster, not only because the speaker placement was right where your palms would be but also, when the fan ramped up, it effectively neutralised any bass.

The effort of trying to listen to the built in speakers with any external noise was simply exhausting and I find the same with the AW15R2, the sound produced via the speakers is mildly adequate and just about ok for watching the odd TV show.

Otherwise, I use a Bluetooth speaker for better sound for movies etc... and a pair of decent and comfortable headphones for when I want immersion.

    Just my two pence...

Thanks sirleeofroy. Good advice and I follow the headphone/earphones rule myself.. Issue comes when I watch that odd show or movie with the better half or my kids (when we are too lazy for the TV)..
the Bluetooth I have is a single speaker (not even 2.0).

I saw some good reviews for the Thermaltake MASSIVE SP, and also i was looking for a palm raise setup to ease the typing... so was planning for the proverbial two bird kill :)
    Any advice on that end?

No worries, I see where you're coming from and the difference in sound using the Thermaltake is demonstrated quite nicely in this vid. Around 8mins....

There is also this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/DEEPCOOL-Notebook-Splitter-Speakers-Aluminum/dp/B00IF9QXT0

It's a bit lairy (Asus ROG anyone?!) but is an alternative, see around 4mins -

    Hello,

    Another day another issue :(

Actually this has happened to me more than a couple of times now....

I have Windows 10 and use the power options to sleep on lid down. And after a while it goes off to hibernate.
Now many a times though, when I open the lid, and press the power button, it crashes (BSOD) OR it automatically restarts the system

Cheeking the event logs shows this error "Windows failed to resume from hibernate with error status 0xC0000001."

I am on "1.2.2" BIOS version, updated nVidia and Intel drivers, and the boot is on m.2.

appreciate any ideas or suggestions on having this sorted !

    EDIT:
    UPDATE:

OK, ran whocrashed, and got the below -

On Thu 10/6/2016 12:27:34 PM GMT your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\100616-13703-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: qcamain1.sys (Qcamain10x64+0x11552E)
    Bugcheck code: 0x1DF (0xC0000001, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0)
    Error: CUSTOM_ERROR
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: qcamain1.sys .

    Any ideas, anyone?

    Hi guys !
I'm really thinking about getting the R2 at the end of the year, such a great laptop!
But! As far as I see, the touchscreen variant is pretty rare in the dell euro outlet. Can I swap out the screen of a non touch 4k model for the touchscreen part if I order the exact screen part from dell or from somewhere else ?
geeeez, I just cant wait till December!

Can our Alienware 15 R2 get 120hz no problem with an external monitor? Does it have to be via USB type C or HDMI? Any certain type of hdmi cable? Any kind of monitor that won't work? I have the 970m in my 15r2.

I wanna have the 120hz for FPS's like overwatch and CS.

    Thank you
