But how practical would a 13" (or even a 15" or 17") be for some professional work?

Mostly coursework/practice at the moment, actual work is just using access at the moment.

    But still I'm currently on a 15" chromebook/use to own a surface pro 2.
I cannot use anything under 15" it was such a pain

I think I can hardmod the mobo to remove gpu power limit, I'll report in once the limit is confirmed to be disabled.

Got some news for you who are expecting Bios update to reduce temps from Alienware Tech support. Lol

Engineering releases a new BIOS every time they find something that needs improvement, however since this temperatures are approved by Intel for this processor, most likely there won't be a version to reduce them.

Lol so Alienware is lying then about having an amazing cooling system then, no?

Sent from my E6853 using Tapatalk

So just got my replacement order # and it looks like they gave me some upgrades. The only item I did not want is the 4k screen. I assume I can game at lower resolution but I wanted to know should I contact them back for another option?

Interesting. How do you know this? Umar stated on Twitter that a bios was being worked on for temps right now as a priority. He seems to know what he's talking about.

You can game at lower resolution but personally the scaling down never looks "right" to me. Some don't care.

I'm curious - did they provide you with advance notice of the spec upgrade on the replacement order? If they did it without your knowledge I'd think you are within your rights to ask for the 1080 screen if that's what you want.

I'm gonna guess that the new bios normalizes the voltage between cores

Even with bad paste job, a 15c temp difference is substantial

What is this <normalizes the voltage between cores>? If this is the *normal behavior* on all the models pushed out... Why haven't Dell engineers seen it before they approved the models before releasing it?

That's a link I got from the Alienware tech support twitter account when I asked about getting a copy for a re-install. Not sure what version actually comes shipped with the laptop.

They said they would "expedite" getting a link added to the driver download page, so far no luck there.

'the earlier bios was to stop the shutdowns. The one being worked on is for temps'

This is straight from umar, who, for now, didn't really lie about nvidia drivers, about gsync flickering issues etc. So I'm going to believe him, I don't know who said that to @GTO_PAO11 but if for Intel 99°C is tolerable then I'm afraid intel quality engineers don't know sh#t about their products...

Easier to blame the Intel engineers  I would think none of Intel's engineers said running their chips 99C and almost thermal shutdown is an okay situation. And Dell's tech knows very well that their software developers self have put in throttling algorithms in firmware a way before temp reach 96-99C :D

Is it true that the AW15 would switch to discrete GPU as soon as you plug in an external monitor? Then that might be a deal breaker for me wanting to use this machine as a workstation mainly and gaming machines sometimes. At least if the GTX1070 would the generate so much heat so that fans had to ramp up etc. Shouldn't the Intel GPU be able to drive a 4K external monitor doing just "office stuff" like running Visual Studio etc?

moved desktop icons , background solid color black. taskbar set to hidden and following specs in hwinfo
    15.6 inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS Anti-Glare 300-nits
Monitor Name: LG Philips [Unknown Model: LGD049B]

backlit bleed is horrible. if pull inwards on both bottom corners of the screen it does help it go away .

not sure if getting a replacement would have the same issue tho.

wondering if i can change out the display only for a 15.6 inch UHD (3840 x 2160) IGZO IPS Anti-Glare 300-nits Display

and be able to keeping everything else the same .

can someone compare the light bleed please , wondering if i should get a replacement.

why doesnt dell have the option for the gtx 1070 with the gsync panel? As of right now you can only get gsync with the gtx 1060.

It's probably not the LCD screen but rather the bezels pressing on it. Try to temporarily remove the plastic bezel surrounding it and see if problem improves. At least mine did. Then of course the second question would be how to actually solve it...

Dell sent me a replacement laptop with a 4K screen and I called and asked to bump me down to 1080. I hate the scaling issues. They said they can't and I have to return it and order a new one. Good chance to move down to the 6700 instead of the 6820.

That'd odd because I have a 15 r3 with the gsync display and 1070. Sometimes I know when you talk to a dell rep they can sometimes bring up configs that aren't currently showing. Might be worth a shot.

Yea on the screen ram and ssd, but with 4K any programs on the laptop are blurry, I can't game at 4K in most games so dropping down to 1080 is what I had to do, but side by side with the 1st aw15 at 1080p the native 1080p looked cleaner than the 4K and the 1080p colors loomed more rich.

Ya it definitely TN but it looks better than I was expecting as well. I have a 1440p 144hz IPS monitor I have a hard time going back to 60hz So i went with the TN and I've been really happy with it. Colors aren't quite as vibrant as an IPS but definitely better than I was expecting them to be and the side to side viewing angles are terrific for a TN

out of curiosity why did you order directly from dell instead of a reseller like Hidevolution?

also can you upload some pics? from what i hear the 4k has better colors
why couldnt you game at 4k in most games? all benchmarks show the 1070(mobile) getting playable fps in 4k.

I order directly from dell. Wow at 4K and set at 7 was getting like 15-30fps and a lot of spikes. I rather have a solid 60 at 1080p than fps spikes at 4K.

We've just had an Alienware rep at PAX Australia confirm that a new BIOS is on the way because apparently the BIOS is reading incorrect temperatures from the CPU:
    https://www.twitch.tv/alienware/v/99048794
    Watch from 1:04:00.

Hopefully this is the answer for all the troubles...

The only way I see that actually working of it is reading the spikes incorrectly, it would stop he randomly ramp ups, but people say they are hitting 93 constantly on a bench a simple bios update won't fix it. I don't understand how that desktop gpu can say at 60c but a laptop CPU is hitting that high even the desktop cpus with the stock coolers do better lol

The only way people are determining they're hitting 93C is based on the sensors which are controlled by the BIOS. I don't know exactly how it works, but if the BIOS is misreading the temperatures which it then uses to scale back the CPU, then it's perfectly reasonable that a BIOS update could solve both the high reported temps and the throttling.

Thing is it's only happening to some laptops not all, everyone should be in the 1.02 or 1.06, thus ruling out the bios actually fixing it but it will mask it to make you think it's fixed.

Yes, only some, but perhaps the result of a different motherboard / revision (ie, it seems to be predominantly the G-Sync motherboard that has the issue). There'll be no masking the CPU performance. Mine throttles at the moment, so it'll be pretty clear if this BIOS fixes it or not.

I'm certainly not guaranteeing anything, but it does seem at least possible to me, so we'll wait and see.

Thats why I reordered mine with the 6700 instead minus the 2mb of l3 cache and -100mhz of CPU speed, i have no desire to oc and you really won't see a difference in performance other then benchmarks which i don't buy a laptop to show numbers. The 6700 uses about 20-30 watts less at peak thus being a cooler chip and that leds to a quieter laptop which i like when i game for long periods of time. You won't see the 6700 spike as much at the 6820

Have you repasted? When you paste the CPU out a little more paste than normal. It will not hurt the temps but if the heatsink is warped or a divot it will fill it better. People are saying that the two have gaps and that's why some cores are seeing differences. My even cores we're about 10 apart and the odds were 13. When I repasted it dropped them all to under 5. But for some reason my laptop the fans were quiet than when it reached 65 the fans went to 100%. Very annoying due to them staying like that the whole time.

    Yes, twice.

When I repasted the second time there was still paste squeezed out all the sides from the first time (not much, but at least a little bit) so I don't think more paste would change anything.
