Great temps.. However, it's all relative to fan speeds/level of noise associated to keep these temps like this.. How loud is the system after an hour of OCCT? Like for example, at 4ghz on my machine, it's essentially barely making noise (with auto fans) after an hour of OCCT but the temps would definitely be in the 80s... If I ramp up the fans or go full speed, then i'd be in the low 70s as well. Just i'm curious to know what it takes on the fan noise front to get these kinds of temps.. 71c at 4ghz on a 6820HK is really cold seeing it takes more voltage to do 4ghz than it takes my 6700K to do it.

Just ordered the second R3 with the TN panel (fingers crossed for backlight bleed). Added more SSD and downgraded the WIFI to the 1435 one. Returning the first unit.

"Cured and Fixed" - with hours of work :)

It's best to return your laptop to AW for another if you have the CPU high temperature core differential problem, rather than try to fix it yourself.

Return for another unit, return for refund, or worse case RMA motherboard.

Here is @iunlock 's breakdown of what he had to do to cure and fix the CPU high temperature core differential:

Warning: Some i7-6820HKs (and 6700HQ's) have Uneven Core Temps

I should have clarified further, but the BIOS I linked is actually different to the 1.0.6 BIOS that was released last week. I know this one also says 1.0.6, but trust me it is different. If you download this one you'll find the file size is slightly different, and as I said this one does actually change the temperatures reported, and leads to less throttling (at least in my unit it does).

    Here's the link again: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=F007Y

FWIW, you'll also notice it says the release date is 7 Nov.

It stayed the same temps, I just reflashed it to see, the fans are still kinda ramping up hard though.

Interesting. On mine it was reaching 99C at 2.8GHz with just OCCT, but with this BIOS it only reached 87C at 2.8GHz.

Shouldn't it be maxing out at 3.1ghz? There's still some throttle going on there.

My 15 R3 is in transit - purchased last week. Now I see there is a 10% discount! I'm tempted to buy again and have the first one returned - or do you think Dell will give me a 10% refund?

Yes, however part of the problem there is the TDP limit they have; the 45W limit is reached at stock voltage very easily, which means it will only maintain the full turbo boost for 28s before dropping the speeds down. If you override that it will go higher, however then it starts to run into temp issues.

It does. If I undervolt with -130mV I can almost get the TDP under 45W, although it still drifts over causing it to drop to 3.0GHz. Still, the average is kept around 3060-3080MHz, so it's good enough. I still need to sort out the uneven temps, which from the sounds of it will require adjusting the heatsink / mount.

    Hello,

Hopefully someone can help me out. So, I just got my Alienware 15 R3, i7-6700. This thing is getting crazy hot during games. The GPU does not get above 60. I have run stress tests on the CPU and it never gets above 80 degrees... How come it gets in the mid 90s during any type of gaming?? The CPU utilization during gaming is not even higher than 40% on the cores. Is there possibly something going on between the GPU and the CPU where the CPU is picking up the slack because something is wrong with the GPU? Any suggestions would be great!! Thanks everyone.

The gpu and CPU share the same cooling system so it's possible that the game is stressing both at the same time and reducing your cooling capacity. You could also try elevating the rear of the laptop to get better airflow to the intakes on bottom. And repaste, of course.

The problem is unified heatsink aka shared heatsink and pipes between cpu/gpu :D

I'm assuming that is also the reason why nvidia gpu seem to be required for an external monitor, ie that only that GPU is connected to the mDP. What about the HDMI port?

Not sure what it's connected to but hdmi doesn't have the bandwidth to run gsysnc so DisplayPort is required anyway on all the monitors I've seen or owned.

My actual idea here was that if the HDMI could drive an external 4K monitor using only the Intel GPU, that would be nice for office use like programming. Ie less heat and battery consumption (i guess)

The problem is the gsync models use only the gpu. Not that then Intel gpu can't do external

    Also
The new 15 has HDMI 2.0 so it should be able to do 4k/60hz (I don't think there are any 4K gsync screen with 100/120/144 Hz?)

It seems to be from a warped or uneven heatsink. Sound familiar? (cough cough Clevo).

Hey guys, since there are a discount now, I'm thinking to purchase AW15R3 with i7-6820HK with Nvidia 1079 and 120Hz panel. Is that ok? Or any suggestions? Should I purchase it right now or I should wait for more stable product with I'm considering the build quality and the heat problems and some other problems also...

Are you saying it is possible to buy a 15 with gsync, the 1070 and the i7-6820HK!?!?

In the USA you can currently only get the 15.6 inch UHD (3840 x 2160) IGZO IPS Anti-Glare 300-nits Display with the 6820HK. I personally have been waiting since they released the laptop to be able to buy it in the config you posted above. I wish they offered it so I could actually get it. But I will keep waiting until they do. I mean if the 6700 was acceptable I might as well drop down to a AW13 at that point.

Most users who are having the issue say that a repaste with liquid metal fixes it. If the issue was an uneven heatsink using liquid metal would be a disaster. The fact that no one has reported worse temps with liquid metal tells us the issue is likely not an uneven heatsink but a combination of problems involving using sand in place of thermal paste and an actual issue with the cpu die itself.

Dell seems to offer different configurations in different countries so it's possible that the 6820hk with gsync is available in Europe. Get this if they are offering and report back!
