Frank Azor confirmed some AW 15 units left the factory with the thermal modules not properly mounted. Thanks to Iunlock's study about this.

Also, not related to AW 15 but 1080 GTX AW 17 will be available 11/21.

Hey Guys, Those with 15r3 and 17r4 would you care to hit f12 on startup and in boot menu run diagnostics.

I am hearing of several people getting failed cpu fan results.

I think this is just software related with bios maybe but would like to see feedback.

    Thank you.

Hi guys! Any news on AW15R3s? Is Alienware still pumping out crooked heatsinks painted with toothpaste?

I was really looking forward to this machine and decided to wait out the bad batch.. Any improvements or is it still a do it yourself kit?

Finally received mine. Did some test. I was getting about 95 C on the CPU. But I undervolted the Core voltage offset and Cache voltage offset by -100mv. And my temps went down to low 80's. Haven't been running on this long. But overall i'm happy. Had some slight hiccups yesterday when running VR. Turns out I didn't have the latest drivers so I need to take another stab at it.

Alienware should issue a total and complete recall of the AW 15 and AW 17 systems that left the factory before they fixed the issue (as per Umer & Azor's Twitter)
As part of the fix, they must change the design of the heatsink to have 4 screws and uniform pressure over CPU and GPU. They must also change their thermal paste to something reasonable.

This is like the Samsung Note 7 issue. Thermal shutdowns on gaming machines are JUST AS BAD as a Note 7 going up in flames.
Both are design flaws that produce excessive heat and hamper customers from using their devices.

They dont need to change the heatsink as Azor said. They just need to alter the assembly. (Tension arm).
Also this does not affect the 17 like it affects the 15.

Wait a minute pls clarify this issue of heatsink is not there in 17 and only affects the 15 ???

    @iunlock
U have provided the solution to the heat sink problem kudos to you but is this a permanent solution cause somewhere it was said the tension arm will move back to original position due to heat generated so is it a temporary fix ?

The heat sink issue is specific to the 15R3. My 17R4 is just fine.

That theory of the tension arm going back to the original position is yet to be proven. I think it'll hold up pretty well, but again we'll see...only time will tell.

A design flaw affects ALL UNITS, a quality control issue some ;). heatsink problems here definitely sit in the second category.

Happy to see that the light bleed issues will be fixed

I'm still undecided if I'll keep mine or not. They offered me a replacement, but it won't be here for another 3 weeks (which at that point I will be beyond my return time). I'm fine with my temps right now with undervolting, but my screen still looks like crap (gsync 120hz). Debating if I should return today and just order a Clevo from HID.

So are all 15's with G-SYNC having issues? Just making sure before I receive my replacement machine. I plan to send it up to Mobius 1 after to give it some TLC with a repaste.

Not necessarily. AW had a previous design flaw in the M11x hinge, which broke easily; but not all units did break, was still a design flaw, not QC.

More recent and infamous, Samsung had a design flaw in the Galaxy Note 7 which could cause it to burst into flames. Again not a QC issue, but not every phone has gone up in smoke.

So I just got my r3 in (Ordered around 11/4/16) and so far everything looks good. I didn't run a stress test to check the temps, but plan to over the weekend. During the modest benchmarking that I do, it didn't get overly hot on the outside so I am thinking its going to be fine. Its just the 6700 and 1060 so I don't think it'll get too bad anyway. I will be hooking it up to my amp with a 1080 and see how that works out. The screen is pretty decent (base FHD) although there is clearly some tension areas on the corners where there is a slight bleed. Last night (first few hours with it) I guess I was being overly critical and thought it was much worse. Today I looked at it with my wife (a non-tech person) and she could not notice any irregularity. At full brightness, its there, but at about 50-60 its generally indistinguishable unless you press on the bezels.

Overall the fit and finish has been pretty outstanding. The design elements from last year are much improved. I will say that the laptop is extremely stout with the 99wh battery. This feels heavier than my previous AW17 and it probably is. I really like the port placement and the hinge forward design is nice in the fact that it brings the screen slightly closer (maybe it just feels that way). At first I thought I was going to dislike the base screen as I have been using 4k for a while now and I must say that it is pretty darn nice. Colors are good, clarity is there, and matte is a nice touch.

Provided there are no crazy sales during BF that would entice me to get a 13 or upgraded 15, I anticipate to keep this.

Feel free to do all the analogy you want in the end it's just a screw badly tightened, not a weak hinge not an explosive battery ...

The heatsink is not designed incorrectly, could it have been better ? Yes of course, but the fact that tightening a screw solves the issue shows a lack of QC NOT a design flaw. This is my opinion on the matter feel free to have your own and I respect that very much.

Yes, I agree that the AW 15 does not have a design flaw, it could have been better though.

I was disagreeing that with your statement: "A design flaw affects ALL UNITS, a quality control issue some ;)."

That is just not true. Not an opinion either.

So question about the gpu driver... I installed geforce experience and it said I have the most current drivers, but I then went to the website and there is a more recent one... i downloaded it and it could not identify the hardware. I also had the same issue with 3dmark firestrike & timespy... Thoughts?

NM... I downloaded the 32bit version. 64 installed without a hitch. Still wondering why geforce experience didn't find the update for me.

Has anyone tried buying the 1070 version through chat? how much of a discount were you able to get? I wan't to know a general cutoff line before they tell me to **** off lol...The one that I want costs $1850 after coupon, and I was hoping that maybe I could get it for ~1400-1500 through chat.

the more you spend the easier it is. 1400 from something that's normal 2k+ is a bit wishful.

now if you're trying to get something that's normally 3k, 2400-2500 might be a little more doable.

Discharge to 30% and charge to full once a month to be safe.

Also I'm not exactly sure what's happening here but on iGPU mode my CPU is getting throttled by the reason "GT: Fuses limit". Running OCCT stress test with cpu consuming around 28 watts (testing non turbo behavior). So the TDP limit is well below.

So it's not an issue with the CPU, it's the iGPU. Strangely enough I'm not running anything graphically intensive, just staring at desktop background.

They already know the issue about the heatsink making the thermal paste to screw itself more info at https://twitter.com/aw_umar/with_replies. I asked

@aw_umar Hello, i ordered my AW15 the past 7/11 and shipped within 9/11, will i have the temp issues ? or these were addressed before? SPAIN

    and his response was

The changes occurred two weeks ago.I would still suggest downloading the latest BIOS when you get it.

Right! Forgot about that! I'll wanna check the pricing on that.. So far I've seen the new blade pro preorders on HID and they start at 3750eu which is completely ridiculous.

If the AW17 with 1080GTX will be comparable to the Titan and ASUS G701VI in price I might consider it :) thanks man!

Is there a way to check build or shipping status based on quote number? My company ordered it so I can't log on to their acct but I have the quote number.

You can search for an order 5 ways; your company should be able to give at least 1 of the 5
