Perhaps no one knows yet. Have Dellienware delivered a perfect heatsink and thermal paste for this model? Probably not o_O

What? you suggest that all the delivered laptops cpus malfunctioning and overheating? doesnt it affect only 1-5%? i thought there are 5% tops that are bad (like 90+) but the majority is normal like 75 or 80 max? or there are a lot, where the top doesnt reach 90+ but alomst there? and its common???

Yeah - mine was produced and shipped yesterday and hopefully will arrive next week :)

Looking forward that there already was a change or fix for the 6820HK and any kind of thermalpaste issues, else i guess i have to repaste which would be not that problem (hopefully this is within warranty)

Q: should i do a CPU "burn in" test after trying to game and hopefully not overheat (and cancel if it reaches 98°C) or should i do a GPU and CPU stresstest?

    Regards
    aVa

Hey man.. I saw your laptop spec. and just curious about your SSD m.2 and Ram upgrade options. Any ideas on the stock ram that alienware provided? I'm thinking getting 1 more 8gb ram stick to have the full 16gb experience.

As for the m.2 SSD... I'm thinking $300 for 1tb evo 850 or 512gb evo 950, any thoughts?

Why, in theory you can go for a 2400 DDR4 SODIMM with good CL rate, then i guess the slower (orig. AW memory) will be anchor for clockspeed and latency. I just wanna say i had 4 different 8GB SO DIMM DDR3 in my old MSI GT72 and absolutely no issues in focus of stability or speed :) itś not mor that hard as in couple of years back :)

    I´ve ordered 2 x 16GB DDR4 2400 as best price/speed for mine.

I only refer to what I have seen. Although some might have ok temp... Uneven temp between hottest vs. coldest core is too big and it should not be so. Far beyond Intel's specifications!! Anywhere from 10 to 40 degrees difference between the hottest vs. coldest core on the model is crazy. The figures I have seen. Is far more than what you say... That this problem affect only 1-5%

Well this is a great question, I have ordered a Samsung 960 pro 512GB which is the latest one, it should be faster than 950 and the price is just a little higher than the 950 I'll suggest to pre-order this. I'll make this SSD drive as boot drive and add a normal 500 GB Samsung 850 m.2 as a normal use drive which is more cheaper but slower I don't care about that I'll keep my main game in the fastest 960 pro. For replacing the 2.5inch Sata I'll go with the HyperX savage 480GB SSD(which come with a harddisk case and reader) and use the original HHD as a external harddisk.
The ram I have order a 16GB HyperX 2400, it should able to work with the original 8GB well I guess so? Then I will have 24GB together. If not I'll just simply throw the original ram away.

You will not notice the difference between a 950 PRO and 960 PRO. Stop lying to yourselves. Save some money and grab a cheap 950 off eBay or Amazon.

I have the 950 PRO and 600p and can't even tell the difference between those. They're worlds apart in specs.

Practically null difference between the 950pro and 960evo/pro when it comes to random read (most important property). Get the cheapest.

    Hi all,
Does anyone know if and when Alienware fixed the heating problem on the AW15s where one of the core temperature was higher than the rest and if it was a hardware or a software fix?

I definitely would prefer an SATA3 SSD instead a HDD, i had trouble with games and "reading" on my GT72 past days where i´ve had HDD only.

Out of my perspective the win from SATA3 SSD over HDD is absolutely awesome, from SATA3 SSD to PCIE SSD you may not recognize at all in daily use (games/programs).

Edit: but in focus of m2-2280 (which is a physical standard) you need to check your chipset/requirements as some can "speak" SATAIII only, some PCIE only, some both, check before buying any SSD stick (m2/2280)

Are you perhaps confusing the 850 Evo with the 950 Pro here? The comparission made was between the 950 Pro and the 960 Pro.

NVMe is the new standard. The SATA bus is the bottleneck. As long as you go NVMe, you should be good. It's all about I/O queue depth.

After speaking twice with a Dell Support person he claims that there is not a problem and that laptops should not be seen as desktops and that the temperatures are normal. I have done the undervolting, down to -0.120, and I still get bad results. I tried to lower the volt more but the machine became unstable.

This is a screen shot of the average temps for a 30 minute run of me playing Assassins Creed Syndicate...

    https://goo.gl/photos/dsjZCvyS7vuy25zHA

You can see that core 0 and core 3 have 10 degree average difference for the 30 minutes. I was getting thermal events on core 0 and 3. I suspect that core 3 is what is SHOULD be.

I will give Dell one more chance otherwise I am going to return the machine.

The High temps here are very bad. BUT you don't have huge uneven temps (4 C on average temps and 7 C on high temps is okay).

A simple repaste is probably all you need. And I would do that myself. Dell would just ruin it. And returning it risks the uneven core temp problem.

Basically all the laptops run 90+C? or these are the bad examples only? is there anyone on the forum, who has temps below 90 when stresstesting the cpu? or better, around 80? if all the laptops run more than 90C, i will not buy this.

See post below or read the entire thread!!
I can just refer to my previous post. Dell have serious problems with temp [IMG] on the new models. And I can't see a change in this!! Perfect examples should already been here by now, if you should rely on what Mr. Azor - Umar and AW support have said.

Ok, Is there a BIOS fix for CPU temperatures ? I see people are working on it. Havent spotted a fix yet in the comments.

Also, how loud are the fans? (I mean when browsing, and while under full load)

I mean this is a small sample I've seen several posts on reddit the las few days of people receiving their r4s and 3s and getting temps in the 70s. Seems there is still some mild core differential but still. It's hard to say if these people hit the lottery or if the issue has been fixed for the most part. I think it will take a few more weeks to get more data on the subject. Wish mine would get here so I can test it.

Even I decided not to go with G-sync. The colors are so much better on non g sync panel because of IPS display. Colors look washed out on TN panel.

    I rather have IPS screen.
Also, Considering this GPU will give 60fps for every game for the next 2-3 years on highest settings, I think its ok.

Games with less than 40fps will look **** with and without the Gsync.

Also, I need the laptop for school so I kinda need the battery more than I need the Gsync.

Still, Im worries about the light bleed and the temperatures... people talk about undervolting and re-pasting..
Is that even normal for users to do? I mean, why do I need to deal with those stuff as a customer?

The simplest way to put this: high temperatures result in lower performance and increased hardware degradation.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...5r3-disassembly-repaste-guide-results.797373/

Imagine never changing the oil in your car. The engine would eventually overheat and warp.

So I just finished chatting with the Dell Support people. They do not think that there is a problem with the laptop and the 16 degree difference in core temps is fine...

Here you go, the full result of my chat...

11/21/2016 07:52:56AM Keith Ball: "I am not happy with the heat of my laptop. Having read online a couple of reviews that claim their aw 15r3 is able to game at 60 degrees, I think there is something not right with mine."
    11/21/2016 07:53:07AM Keith Ball: " www.tomshardware.com/.../alienware-15-r3-gaming-laptop,4796-4.html"
    11/21/2016 07:53:16AM Keith Ball: " www.mobiletechreview.com/.../Alienware-15-R3.htm"
11/21/2016 07:53:26AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "Does the system switchoff again?"
11/21/2016 07:54:21AM Keith Ball: "I have not hit that problem since the bios update, but I am getting thermal throttling events all the time."
11/21/2016 07:54:45AM Keith Ball: "I also have a core temp difference of 16 degrees"

11/21/2016 07:55:20AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "Thats normaly if you stress the system with games"
11/21/2016 07:55:37AM Keith Ball: "90+ is not normal and will kill the laptop."
11/21/2016 07:55:39AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "Close the application that showing the temperature"
11/21/2016 07:55:41AM Keith Ball: "It is also not what is claimed."
11/21/2016 07:55:57AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "Now play"
11/21/2016 07:56:24AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "Thats a mobile system"

11/21/2016 07:56:49AM Keith Ball: "So you are claiming that this is normal?"
11/21/2016 07:57:13AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "Does the diagnostics showing any error-code?"
11/21/2016 07:57:24AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "Can you normaly play?"

11/21/2016 07:57:33AM Keith Ball: "The lifetime of the laptop will not last very long with those heat problems and it is underperforming."
11/21/2016 07:57:56AM Keith Ball: "I get jitters in game, when the Thermal Events occur."
11/21/2016 07:58:27AM Keith Ball: "The diagnostics show no errors."
11/21/2016 07:59:02AM Keith Ball: "So, you say that laptop is fine. ok. Who do I talk to about returning it, as I cant believe you think 90+ is ok."
11/21/2016 07:59:04AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "Than seems to be all OK."
11/21/2016 07:59:38AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "If you stress the system, then 90 degree is OK"

11/21/2016 08:00:26AM Keith Ball: "So how do you explain the core temp difference?"
11/21/2016 08:00:52AM Keith Ball: "One core running at 80, which I would accept as being stressed and the other 96?"
11/21/2016 08:02:00AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "different stress"
11/21/2016 08:02:29AM Keith Ball: "To me it seems like it needs to be repasted. And there heatsink is sitting incorrectly on the cpu."
11/21/2016 08:02:42AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "PLEASE CLOSE THE TEMPERATURE-SCREEN"
11/21/2016 08:05:02AM Keith Ball: "Who do I get in touch with to either get a second opinion on this? As I think it needs to be repaired, or how do I return the device?"
11/21/2016 08:06:49AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "The system is technical OK. We cant take back the system here in the techn. support"
11/21/2016 08:07:42AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "NO technical problem"

11/21/2016 08:07:45AM Keith Ball: "And you will not send someone to repaste and reseat the cpu?"
11/21/2016 08:07:54AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "NO"
11/21/2016 08:08:03AM Keith Ball: "ok, thanks."
11/21/2016 08:08:07AM Keith Ball: "Have a nice day."
11/21/2016 08:08:14AM Mittel (JOERG KIESSLING): "thanks"

I am apparently the proud owner of a perfectly fine and working AW15R3... I guess all I can do now is either manually repaste myself or return the damned thing. I just gave them a LOT of money for this thing. Hmmmpf.

Of course I believe I have not hit the Switch off issue as I undervolted the cpu, but I should NOT have to do that.
