No one can know this. It heavily depends with what AMD & Nvidia will come the upcoming months/years.

I had the same issue, reinstalling back Dell ones helped. In my case framerate in GTA V dropped from 60 to less than 30.

Like rinneh said, this is difficult to quantify because no one can predict what AMD or Nvidia will come out with in the future. However, I would say that it's a good chance that you can run ultra/high settings until the next refresh. Which may be a year or two away. It really just depends.

I have done both tests and the results are in this album. This is my first time using imgur, so let me know if it is inaccessible.

Thanks, but I need also the Cpu package power numbers aka the max power draw from processor.

Edit. And restart the machine between the different tests for accuracy.

Ok thanks for the answer. I might also have the possibility to get the 17 r4 with a gtx 1080 and the qhd screen. If I can, which one should I get? The 15 r3 with gtx 1070 and uh screen or the 17 r4? (both with 16gb ram, 256gb ssd and 1tb hdd).

Alright all images should be in the folder now. There is something interesting to note. It appears that before I rebooted, it would actually go up to the power limit, but after rebooting between each test, it does not even come close, regardless of where the limit is set in xtu.

Edit: I assume this is for the BGA venting thread? haha

I try to collect some hard data. But your bench scored is all too low. Max out all limits, test again and see if you get normal scores like http://hwbot.org/hardware/processor/core_i7_6700hq/

Will do. I'll try to get it tonight or at some point tomorrow. Not sure what made it actually go up to 45w initially, but I wouldn't mind making it stay like that.

    Hello all!

    I have the 15r3 with a 256 SSD and the 1To HDD,

Is it better to add a Samsung 850 EVO 500 Go M.2 2280 ( the stick shape.. sorry I'm a newbie) or replace the HDD by a 500 GB Samsung EVO basic ?

    Thank you!

Got my 15r3 1070 120 hz back from the repair center today.

The temps are much improved. I'm in occt at 8 mins now and max had been 71/67/70/65. Fans are barely running.

But the screen is doing this weird thing at mac brightness it dims itself. If I sleep and wake up it goes bright again until about 30 seconds and it dims again. They did replace the LCD too. If I turn it down 1 tick it brightens up but not to max brightness.

    Any ideas on that? [IMG]

Also I see it is like auto dimming and brightening like an auto backlights feature which is super annoying. And it will only go 60 hz. Is there a driver?

And the nvidia control panel doesn't have g sync option anymore

The auto dimming can be solved by this:

    http://windows.wonderhowto.com/how-...ows-10-for-maximum-screen-brightness-0163440/

The other 2 symptoms you described sound like your screen was swapped to the 1080p 60hz non gsync panel.

Dang man I was reading your story like maybe the repair depot got their stuff together. Nope still messing things up even worse than when it went in lol. Hope it works for you. Mine went in but didn't come out. Good thing I wiped the drives before hand.

It's ok though, I bought complete Care and they are making good on that. I feel like they completely do not care.

Too bad you can not have gsync on the laptop display and still switch to the igpu when you want because it would be great to have the gsync laptop screen for gaming but then use the igpu for the insane battery life when not gaming.

you can have a normal display for portable work with good battery life, and you can hook up your laptop to a 24+" gsync monitor at home.

Its a personal preference, but losing the hard drive will let you run quiet and with less power. The 1TB Samsung 850 EVO is a great replacement for the HDD. It comes with cloning software also.

That still leaves 2 x m.2 slots available for more SSD!

Yea that is what I plan to do, still though would be nice to have gsync and good battery life on the go.

Yea I am in the same boat but plan to pickup a reactor 1TB 2.5" and then pop in a 1TB 960 pro. I figure best to buy a cheep SSD for the 2.5" to free up money for the high speed m.2 ports. For me using a mechanical drive in a laptop is a waste.

The double whammy is that the computer thinks it's the gsync so the Optimus button doesn't work either.

They are sending a technician this week. Ugh.

At least the temps are fixed lol

New R15 arrived this morning and already booked up to be returned for a refund :(, they offered to send me a replacement, but after reading some of the replies on this forum, I didn't want to risk getting one that has been refurbished.

The 120Hz FHD G-Synch screen has a visible mark on it, directly in front of the Alienware lid logo. It looks to me like the logo is pushing on to the back of the screen and therefore distorting it so that there is a darker area about 1 inch in diameter.
When I rub the screen with a cloth, I can see 2 visible dots which I assume are the back of screws or something that attach the Alienware logo to the lid.
I initially saw the mark when the laptop booted up (Dark grey background), it is not visible against the Alienware black wallpaper, and have also seen it multiple times since when playing games and surfing.

On a more positive note, I have received a 15% discount off a new one so have already ordered and getting a 300 Nits FHD without G-Synch which will hopefully help with a longer battery life for surfing and viewing videos, I didn't want to risk the same screen again.

I checked the heat being generated when running OCCT and all was good (Left it running for about 10 minutes), looks like Alienware have resolved the overheating issues.

    Hello,
6700hq/1070/120hz arrived monday, but i'm sitting my semester exam all the week so i didn't have the time to take a look at it before this evening.
Out of the box all look good, no any problem with the 120hz tn panel. Just a little bleed at the bottom, but it's ok.
About temps i only ran occt for about 30min.
    Average temp : 68-70°C
And the core #0 max temp is 75°C.
So it's looks ok for my unit.
Just i'm a little bit disapointed with core temp differences btw core #0 and #3 because while the cpu is at 100%, from what i see there is a delta of minimum 5°C going until 9°C
It's enought big, more to come this weekend when i'll have the time.
Will see if i have pad update and what's about temps after repasting

Question i have noctua paste from 2 years, will it affect it's quality ? and thermal efficiency ?

How are your feeling about the ghosting and downscaling to 1080p while gaming? Coming form a Mac retina display, will the 1080ips will feel to "pixely"?

So I have finally received my 15r3 back from the repair center, they replaced the heatsink the palmrest assembly and a couple of other things. The temps are idling about 25 after it stabilized. They replaced the touch pad with I assume a newer model. Its recessed a little more than noramal ( i like this) and the biggest part is the touch pad material is changed. Its metal like and very smooth almost glass like. I guess they got enough complaints about it. They did leave the pull tabs for the touch pad in. I managed to pull them out some but the plastic is sill wedged in the touch pad and the chasis. Easy fix though.

Anyone know if AlienRespawn works with the new Alienware's, only reason for asking is that I generally like to restore to the factory image every few months to keep things nice and clean on the laptop, I can use the inbuilt Windows reset option but I believe this will clear everything except for the Windows installation which will mean I will need to install all of the other software and drivers again.

I used to use AlienRespawn on an M13X and M17X and it was great, but after downloading it an hour or so ago and taking a backup, it failed and now says the factory image no longer exists. I'm not so worried about this particular laptop as it is going back to Dell and getting a new one in the next couple of weeks, it would be really good to know how I can restore back to factory settings in future though and when and how you take a copy of the image.

    Thanks

Ran Firestrike, Fans stayed very quiet during the test. Max temps on cpu were 69, 67 69 65. Not bad. Playing around with the laptop I did notice that the touchpad had a gap on the top from the frame and if you press on the touch pad it bows down. I wonder if they forgot a screw or a clip on it. Here is firestrike.

Did anyone ever find out if and how we can buy the metal shield / heat sink that comes on the 1TB m.2 drives?

Looks like the new laptops are up but you can currently only get the i7-7820HK on gsync. No option to get it on a normal display. Ironic given that the only reason one would want the 7820HK over the 6820HK is for the updated gpu and other battery enhancements that only can be used without gsync... otherwise the 7820HK is clock for clock the same cpu as the 6820HK lol

Even worse the only non gsync option appears to be with an i5-7300HQ

The 7820HK Should go to 4.4ghz where as the 6820HK maxes around 4.1ghz... where are you seeing that their clocks are the same?

The performance per clock is the same 7820HK and 6820HK at same frequency = same performance. When you exclude the gpu part the 7820HK and 6820HK are the same chip just with a factory over clock. The 7820HK will hit 4.4ghz under the same conditions that a 6820HK would. They could have just as easily made a software change to the 6820HK and bam you got a 7820HK. The only real difference is the gpu changes. If your not using the igpu these changes do not effect you. There is numerous reviews out there on difference between skylake and kaby lake it is well documented the only real difference is in the igpu and other than that it is just a factory OC of skylake oh and unless you discount the additional USB support.

Yea any gsync display will have no optimus :(

If anyone gets an ETA on 7820HK with no gsync please let us know!

Ok looks like the 6th series has returned and you can get non gsync displays on the 6th series chips. For example you can get the i7-6820HK only on non gsync displays and the i7-7820HK only on the TN gsync display (the new ips 60hz gsync comes with the i7-7700HQ).

Based on this information it is likely they are not going to sell the i7-7820HK on non gsync displays until the supply of the i7-6820HK runs out. This is just smart business to prevent them from cannibalizing their sales. With luck by next week they will run out of 6th series and we will see the full release of the 7th series chips.

My 6700hq isn't going higher than 3,1Ghz. Is it normal ?
On Cinebench r15 free version ( last one ) it scored 641 max. What's about yours ?

I just found at Alienware´s shopping page they are selling 1080p IPS G-sync enabled screens. Is this for real? Hopefully they´ll arrive at Mexico sooner than latter.
