How true is the kaby lake version of the 15 R3 lasting 9 hours?

Yes that's normal. The 6700hq limits to 3.1ghz turbo with 4 cores being used.

Just received my R3 with panel model SDC894F. Is it just my example or is this the most bland, lack luster panel ever? Sitting next to my Asus GL502vy it pales in comparison. I'm wondering if I got a dud or they all look so awful. I hear so much about the TN panels' lacking color pop but I can't imagine them being as bad as this IPS panel.

Has anyone tried to see if the 330w power supply can work on the 15? I have one from my old M17x R2, and I'm going to pick it up from my sister's house, but figured I'd check to see if anyone else might have tried. If not, I will post results.

It should work since Dell hasn't changed their power connector in over 5 years.

Yeah, it will physically connect. Dell, however, has been known for limiting the psu compatibility in the BIOS. That's what I'm curious about.

Does anyone know if the Skylake Alienware 13/15/17 models can display HDCP 2.2 protected 4k content on the notebook's own display?

My understanding is that the Skylake CPU is not HDCP 2.2 capable, whereas the Pascal GPUs are. But since the notebook uses Optimus, doesn't that mean the signal goes via the CPU's integrated graphics on the way to the display? Does that break the HDCP 2.2 chain? And is the 4k display (on the Alienware 15) itself HDCP 2.2 capable?

If not, then does that mean the notebook can only display that protected content on an external monitor?

Sorry if I'm being clueless. I tried to look this up and couldn't find anything. I'll probably be sending my 15 r3 back anyway and ordering the Kaby Lake version when it comes out here, but I'm very curious.

Yes thanks you, I saw those 670 average, this is why I was asking for other 15r3 scores.
Because I'm so much far away, where as I'm not temp limited.
I tried both with CPU performance enabled and disabled. And I had my best score while it was disabled. It reached 650. But that still far from 675...

Could you test CB R15 again and monitor the max CPU package power (Use HWiNFO64 or similar). Then post the results. Thanks

Does someone play heroes of the storm here with the 6700? im debating weather the 1070 worth the upgrade mainly for it or the 1060 is more than enough? can the 1060 run it 100+fps when everything is on ultra? the game is mainly cpu limiting...

I don't know about the 330W, but it works with IGPU with a 90W and 130W Dell Adapter (One from a 2007 Inspiron 1520 and the other from a 2011 XPS15).

I had a couple of Dell laptops and have not encountered any which did not work with any Dell adapter since 2005!

Not sure but depending on what you do the kaby lake (when using the igpu) will have better battery life. For example the new igpu can watch 10bit video and decode 4kHD youtube without needing to switch over the dgpu. If you watch a lot of videos and do media rich actions while on battery then the kaby lake version should offer you more battery life assuming you are using the igpu which please note will not be possible if you have a gsync display.

How do you check he panel model?

My r3 that went for repair got a new LCD and they put a 60 hz ips in instead of the 120 hz TN. the tn panel looked awesome but the new screen looks like hot garbage. I wonder if they changed their 1080 IPS panels.

Mine will be getting replaced but just curious.

    Hey Guys,

So I have the 15r3 with the 6700HQ and the GTX 1070.

At first it was not too bad with a max temp of 85°C but now here is what I get after 1h30 of MGS V Phantom Pain:

And the fan is running constantly at max, quite noisy..

I have an undervolt of -160 Mv.

The average temps are around 75°C so maybe a peak at 95°C is ..."normal" ?

I have never reached thermal shutdown

Well the good news is that your core differential is 0! Wow! So your heatsink has even contact but it looks like your going to need something besides sand for thermal paste.

I undervolted by -160 on the cache and core and using Throttlestop to keep the core multipliers @ 26, also disabled turbo boost. I was seeing about 5 hours with a USB gaming moouse and 750GB SSD in place of the HDD, 120Hz screen with 120Hz enabled and a 1070 while browsing the web. The battery life is pretty good I gotta admit and everything is pretty smooth

How do you disable the turbo boost ? Do you get lower temps by disabling it ? And whats the down side of doing it ?

Turbo takes core clock from 2.6 to 3.1. If disabled max clock is 2.6

It will vastly lower temps. My 98x4 machine was in the 70s max with turbo disabled. But it slows the processor immensely.

    Use throttlestop to do it

Dell Canada updated with Kaby Lake options but pricing is pretty bad.
Factoring in all available discounts, it's ~$550 more versus Black Friday/Boxing Day GTX1070 deals.
The only differences are 7700hq and 60Hz gsync. 1080p@60Hz gsync isn't really necessary with a 1070 and you lose Optimus.

Current Dell Canada discounts: 10%OFFALW, $150OFF$1699PC, 10% off coupon from Dell VIP (email subscription), 2% ebates

    Hi dudes,

    alienware 15 r3 1070, i7-6700HQ
i'm trying to configure laptop to run with maximum performance for the GPU "1070" in the 120hz panel when running under battery because actually i can't reach more than 30fps even in Binding of Isaac.

Any guide to boost gpu performance running under battery?

Yeah I used throttlestop like the other guy said. Its simply a checkbox in the main window, but I also limited the multipliers to 26 max.
Pros? Lower temperatures. Lower noise. Lower temperatures.
Cons - an unnoticeable amount of performance loss. I say unnoticeable cuz, I'm not going for the highest benchmark scores and 8 threads is enough for any videogame out right now, especially 8x 2.6Ghz. Ok maybe this is a 'pro' too

Sooo.. I diabled Turboboost and now my temp difference between cores is VERY small. (3c rather than 30c)... Is this really the issue? Is there a bug or something?

I disabled the Turbo and I guess the muliplier is where it says "Set Multiplier" and you reduce from 35 T to 26 ?

I did that and this is what I get after 2 hours of MGS 5, no drop in FPS, constantly at 60 FPS :

I have a max at 82°C average at 71°C and with the Turbo yesterday I was max at 95°C and average at 76°C. But the fans are always running at max with or without turbo..

Decreasing performance is not an answer to temperature and throttle problems.

I would say ask for a replacement machine with a "fixed" heatsink, else you will return the laptop due to unsatisfactory cooling solution.

Agree. Disabling turbo boost is a good temporizing measure while waiting for repair. But in 2 years you're going to need that boost. So get it fixed now.

You need to get the boost now.

6700HQ will bottleneck a 1060, 1070, 1080 in games that utilize both the cpu and gpu.

In the coming years, with dx12 and vulkan on the horizon, there will be much much more games that depend on an equally stronger cpu to match the gpu

6700HQ is similar to swallowing a cyanide pill that you paid 3000$ and being happy about it

So I ended up purchased the 15 R3 as they're on sale here in Australia. Is there any modifications I'll need to perform once the machine arrives? I've been reading a lot about undervolting and using thinner thermal pads. Is there any need for that with the newer batches? Thanks fellas

    Specs are:

    i7-6700HQ, 16GB RAM, GTX1060, 120Hz G-Sync Display.

Hey forumers, first time here. I purchased the 15R3 from Dell Canada around Black Friday and am not very happy with my temps unfortunately. I'm getting differentials of 10-15 degrees, and maxes of 90+ on all 4 cores while in Gears 4. Obviously, not good long term.

I've been reading the forum and watched all of iunlock's videos on the repaste job, and am just wondering how difficult of a job it is for first timers? I've been lots of desktops from scratch before but never messed around with disassembling or building laptops, and it seems like a pretty daunting task to do a repaste of this unit. The results speak for themselves though! Have any other relative newbies done a successful repaste? Am I building it up to be a much harder job than it actually is? Thanks for the input!

yes, you need to check if your heatsink comes with the correct thin thermal pads as opposed to the old "fat" gummy thermal pads

the other thing you need to do is return it immediately because the 6700hq is worse than suicide

not hard, just need to be careful and spare a lot of time to do the paste job

My 6700HQ seems to run fine in terms of speed and processing power. I am running BF1 @ 4K no problems and now the laptop is running fine for me without Turboboost. I could technically always turn it back on *IF* I need it but would rather keep the CPU cooler for now!

I have done undervolt -160 Mv with Throttlestop and disable the Turbo but it seems that everytime I reboot the computer is reset the undervolt. Is there anything I am missing on Throttlestop, or do you have to run throttlestop all the time ?

When I boot the PC sometimes I have no sounds at all, it shows the "sound wave" on alienware sound settings but it doesnt work either with speakers or headset. I have to reboot the computer 2-3 times to get it work. Anybody have the same problem ?

    Hi,
    So today i disassembled my 15r3 6700hq / 1070 / 120hz ( i received it on monday (02/01/17)
Good news is that i have 0.1mm thermal pads ;)
Still the strange pad on gpu die, but on the cpu, the paste was look pretty good.

For the first time, i ran occt, side of msi kombustor.
After a few minutes, gpu was steady at 70°C, so it's ok
    The cpu...
    (cpu undervoltage : -0.100mV)
i don't know from where it may come, but my core 1 and 3 are 10°C higher than 2 and 4... so 1/3 up until 85°C and 2/4 until 75°C

After this i ran occt alone, and i had in average :
    core 1 : 68°C
    core 2 : 61°C
    core 3 : 67°C
    core 4 : 57°C

so package temp is pretty good, but i have to much core differential ...

For info, i used noctua paste (2 years old, but texture looks good)

I went into the FIVR tab and set the Turbo Rate Limits to all 26. I did this to make it quiet, while both browsing doing simple stuff and quieter during gaming. My temps probably max at around 80-85 with 31.Ghz x4 and Heaven running, so my temps are "fine" I just prefer silence

Is there a lower binned mobile i7 than this fully locked 6700hq? Previous low entry BGA could oc 2 bin. You could ask yourself why is this chips fully locked

As long as the chip works fine with no issues, I'll be a happy man. The model I chose had no option for the 6820HK, I assume that's the go-to CPU?

Quick question. I no longer use GeForce Experience, as they now require an account, and I don't do accounts if forced to, so GOODBYE Nvidia GeForce! My question is I am wondering if everyone is using the Nvidia site or Dell site for Graphics drivers?

I just installed the latest from the Dell support site, and it installed:
Driver Version: 21.21.13.6968, with a supposed release date of Jan 4 2017, but HWinfo64 lists the driver as 4 Nov 2016.
The Nvidia site lists GeForce Game Ready Driver ... Version: 372.90, dated December 4. So I imagine the Jan 4 2017 date is a Dell release date, and not an Nvidia date.
I guess what I am asking is it seems the Nvidia site has more recent releases, but is anyone having problems using those releases as opposed to the official supported release on the Dell support site?
