Fn+F1 is used for graphics amplifier.
Of course, earlier version of AW had low lit screens
It is a gaming laptop, you only install games or programs once but read are frequent, that's the reason for dell opting these ssd with high reads and slower writes. Even 300-500MB is a lot unless you're doing heavy rendering wherein every MB/s counts.

Have you installed it correctly? I'm using 15 r2 and these options which I said are there. I'm sure you're missing some options. I'd like someone with 15 r3 who have installed Desktop mode charge SW to confirm if the option is indeed missing.

i see some people at reddit also have this issues with latest AW 15R3 and AW 17 R4.
maybe AW remove this option at their latest build

Are you sure you've latest version. I think Dell would provide some update. You could try 17 r3 or 15r2 OSD app but i've concerns about battery health in 15 r3. I recommend you wait until fix arrives.

Yeah it seems dell would provide some fix later. At the moment, you can monitor your battery wear level using HWinfo.

Yes I think you will see a bottleneck. IIRSC, those 4k videos are like 5Gigs or more, right? Moreover try editing your videos using current ssd, if it thermal throttles then you won't notice much of a difference upgrading to 960 or equivalent. You know, high temperatures are worst enemy of your computer components.

Well I willl be editing 4K videos taken on my camera which will normally always be less than 5mins long. Will have a think about whether I can see it slowing me down. Then I can get a pci Samsung evo or something to work with videos. Although I love the Alienware, perhaps the xps was more suited to my needs!

Well they have incredibly fast speeds on their xps line (r >2k and w>1.5k). That's what I would expect for a pci ssd. However, as rightly noted earlier, for gaming you read more than write. And faster read speeds than 1.5k wouldnt have a noticeable difference for gaming. The graphics card is where you want the extra money going. Putting in a top spec ssd would only push the price even higher and that wouldn't be competitive

From any manufacturer you would not get a good SSD for low price, even from system builders (no offense).

    In other news...

Alienware 17R4 handled by LHz member @Mobius 1 hands hit 24+ hours torture test OCCT + Unigine Heaven maintaining temperature under 64c average on the CPU 6700HQ undervolted with a max of 3~degree variance and 61-62c on the GPU GTX1070.

System is running on 1.0.9 bios and CPU performance mode activated.

You can choose what you want from some of the other resellers. None ssd or choose one you like. Or buy other places. You can't do this from Dellware. You get a SSD on the purchase with the OS, whether you want to or not.

    Yeah, it's bad.

Especially they force you to buy windows license which can be 80-100 on its own.

SSD, not sure how much they would mark a system down without. I suspect not much because they buy the generic NVME drives in huge bulk and it'll cost little money (to them).

That's what I did in fact as soon as I received the laptop. However, both applications gave me some weird reference number which doesn't correspond to any of the products sold on Toshiba's website (although it was a Toshiba reference). Moreover, when I tried to install Toshiba's ssd/nvme software, it didn't recognise the hard drive at all which is even more weird.

And the buyers pay the price in the end  Normally a higher price than whatt the ssd/HDD cost other places. I don't like this practice. I want to purchase exactly what I want. Not be forced on JUNK.

Toshiba OEM model number is different, I believe it starts with "thnsn" for every Toshiba NVME used on the AW.

Toshiba software only work on retail model, not system OEM like Dell.

Yep, AW should have complete barebones buying option for the 7820HK/1080 model.

Exactly it starts with thnsn, which means that I am not able to update the firmware available on Toshiba's website because their update software doesn't recognise the drive.

It looks like Dellienware use SK Hynix, Liteonit and Sandisk. I know Liteonit is pure garbage. And I would not buy any of these ssd's. Dell always opt for the cheapest they can get to put in their lapBooks, and forget the customer.

Now THIS is what I've been waiting to see. Though not exactly needing to be tested for such a long duration. Jw, are you laying the laptop on something to elevate it? You would probably see 5C difference all around if not. Looks like my first time conductonaut must have used too little.

XPS would throttle and fans are not as effective as AW that's the reason is its pricey and termed as Gaming lappies.

So I am through to dell regarding the screen backlight bleed. I sent them a video of the issue in darkness (as thats all i took last night after I received it). The video is here https://goo.gl/photos/Q4ooC3BKGnwJaTi4A

However they responded with a "take a photo in daylight with low iso". Surely this defeats the purpose? Of course it wont be that visible in sunlight. But i like to game when its darker. They are pulling one here....

I'd respond to them that this is the environment you work in - photo taken during normal operation.

Acceptance or return is up to you, the backlight bleed needs to pass your requirements, not theirs :)

Good to know. I still will add copper shims+conductonaut when I get the shims. I know the 17s fans are about 35% larger, but I didn't get much gain over stock paste to conductonaut (about 8-10C) and I know their paste isn't that good lol

If you have time do test without shim.

Also keep in mind to not forget using the 3M finishing compound on the shim too.

Might also need extra amount of LM since you need to cover the shim surface area in addition to the CPU+CPU heatsink.

I will have to look into this 3M finishing compound. Never messed with copper shims before so if you hadn't mentioned it I would have just made sure it was cleaned with alcohol and used it. Yeah I think I will first try using the numbers displayed around screw-holes. If that doesn't give me a big difference then I will check if I need to add more LM. I doubt the screw pattern will, since my temps are within 5-6C while 100% stressed. And within 3-4C while gaming, so its like the amount of LM used. Yeah I bought the 40$ tube so I have enough, though I am pretty sure about 1x GPU and CPU worth squirted out onto my table due to a bubble. Dodged a bullet there.

I am thinking of adding some more electrical tape to make a -^- shape, where height allows if I need to add more LM. Since I will be placing it in a backpack that I have for transportation. Mission Workshop bags are amazing, ran it under a sink in full blast and the water runs off of it

Has anyone else had this issue? I am getting tessellation artifacts in several games and on unigine benchmarks. Sorry about the audio I was on the phone with Dell while recording. Apparently I muted the sound as well.

I have asked him again for a partial refund. The issue is quite minor (but shouldnt be there anyway). He has offered me a 15% discount on the next system which I may take up and get the same AW again.
Not sure if I need to pay a collection fee for the replacement though....

Hi everybody. First, sorry for my English, i'm French :)

I have ordered my Alienware 15R3 on monday and it must arrive on 22 feb. I'm very excited !!
    I buy this model

    I7 6820HK
    16GB
    256GO SSD
    1070 Nvidia
    UHD IGZO Screen

I have read all this thread and all the posts of 250 pages. It take me a lot of time but i' have learned a lot specially thanks to @iunlock and @Mobius 1 but all posts are interesting.

I planed to repaste my laptop with Thermal Conductonaut and i have already begin to read @iunlock thread's disassembly and repaste. Unfortunatly Conductonaut is unavailable until end of march !! i have some Kryonaut to wait :) I thought i had to withdraw tape after repaste cpu and gpu but i learned i this thread i have to let the tape on the Mobo.

I want to do some tests with my laptop and i will launch OCCT and Heaven together to simulate intensive use. I will do the tests out of the box and after repaste. If you have better test let me know. I also plan to do a clean install of windows and make a new bench.

I have a question, i'm on a Mac since 2009 and i love macos x but i'm not agree with the new high prices of the new macbook pro. Specs are too low and prices too high !! But i'm in love with MacOs X so can i install mac os x on my new laptop ?

    Thanks for all.

I don't think you have the option to run macosX, with the restricted bios you cannot enable or disable some options that is required to get osx properly.

    @Raidriar

Using OCCT and Unigine Heaven at the same time is a good way to test out the thermal performance of your laptop.

Also to be curious? Why didn't you wait for the 7820HK? If I were you I would return the laptop within the 30 day return period and order another one with the newer CPU.

I will say that I was able to get MacOs 10.12.3 to boot but couldn't get the HD 530 driver to install due to the bios modifications. I will try it again at some point. I don't know if his cpu choice reflects this, but Kaby Lake is not supported for a hackintosh yet.

Thanks for your reply. S o if it is imposible I'm gonna run Mac os in a virtual machine maybe, i saw a method to do that with vmware and unlocker but maybe i'm wrong.

Why i didn't wait for the 7820HK ? It seems that there are no big differences between 6820HK and 7820HK, and i don't know when it will released in France and i will be away from my home for 5 or 6 weeks and i will need my laptop at this moment.

But let me know if there is a big difference and i will think about return my laptop. Thanks
