50°C are good temps for a passive (silent) cooling system. But if you're concerned with keeping your temps as low as possible then you can enable Fan Performance mode in Bios, but it's noisy.
If you wan't to keep the fan running a little even while idling then just enable the CPU performance mod or use HWinfo64, click on the fan Icon and create your own fan management.

    Hi all,

i received last week my new Alienare 15 r3 with :

    i7-7820HQ
    16gb memory
    512Gb M.2 (toshiba from DELL).
    1TB mechanical drive.
    screen 1080p/60hz Gsync.

first of all swapped 1tb mechanical drive with Crucial 1.050 GB SSD drive

    Then ...

Tested occt and reaching 90º celsius out of the box , that was a nightmare for me even Dell said it's okey, never mind.

Got my liquid metal conducnaut yesterday and repasted today the CPU and GPU, it took me two hours the whole operation, i know people can do it much faster, but i was thinking every movement to don't risk any part of the laptop.

Now here are the ssd bench i believe it's faster than the 256Gb :

Here it is the occt after 15 minutes loop. i do believe it's enough to reach max temperatures of the CPU after 10min.

I'm really happy now with the repaste.

I will test now with some games and let you know.

Those are some extremely impressive temps, 90° to 65° is a massive improvement!

Tested with Playerunknown's Battleground and after a while CPU max Peak 78º normally 65-68 celsius and GPU 67º.

this game is really poor optimised even now with last update, is a early access game, so no big deal about that, still they are very good temperatures but not as good as i would expect with the CPU almost 80º.

Now i will test with Battlefield 1.

    Conquest 64 players
76º cpu max peak 67º cpu

The Witcher 3 All settings maxxed out (novigrado city)

    76º cpu GPU: 65

Do you guys know any way to obtain a key for the nvidia promotion with the GTX 1070 to get a code for the tom clancy's wildlands or For Honor? i did ask local Dell here, and they don't know even about this promotion.

Do you have multiple screens/screen duplication running? This raises Temps more than you'd think. Is GeForce Experience recording desktop? This also raises Temps a lot at idle. Do you have the rear of the laptop raised a inch or so? That will drop Temps 5-10C. Then there's undervolting which drops temps

Someone that already did repaste with liquid metal, could tell me their temps so i can compare if mine are okey. considering is a i7-7820HQ cpu.

You were right, the laptop started to get stuck at max brightness, then bootlooped so I've removed all drives but my 960 and am currently doing the freshest Windows installation to ever grace mankind. Cloning worked perfectly for years on my 17r2 so I assumed it'd be fine here but evidently not.

Don't know if anyone else has had the issue, but my clean install of win10 after creators update doesn't boot after updating the nvidia drivers to 381.65. A system restore has fixed it, going to try the 381.78 hotfix
Update: the hotfix allows the system to boot, however I cannot change screen brightness

Could you run ATTO Disk Benchmark 2-3 times in a row and post the temperature results for the M.2 ssd? Use HWiNFO for monitoring temp. Thanks

Hey guys...figured, might as well post this here too.

    Repost from the RAM thread...

LOL...okay so for fun and what it's worth (to many it's worth nothing as it really won't make a difference...) but I ran some tests with what I had in my unit stock:

    Samsung 2400MHz @ Cas 17 vs HyperX 2667MHz @ Cas 15 vs SK Hynix 2667MHz @ Cas 19

The HyperX is obviously faster, but look at the Latency of the Samsung 2400MHz. Like a BOSS.

Also, that SK Hynix 2667MHz...so sad. :( ...Great quality / integrity chips (the best actually next to Samsung) but with horrible timings out of the box.

What makes it really bad is that you can't adjust the timings on the 17R4, but on the 17R3 you can? Mmm yea...that needs to change.

So I wonder how those SK Hynix 2667's will do tuned.

As for the Samsung at 2400MHz and holding its own, what can you say...it's Samsung. The King of Chips.

So is it worth it to upgrade your RAM? For 99.9% of the users, NO.

    However...

I'll stick with the HyperX 2667MHz with the Cas 15-17-17 as in this case with not being able to change the timings, having faster RAM speed paired with the Kaby will at the end of the day brings more benefits to whatever degree that is worth to the user.

In this case...I rather have the faster RAM, since the timings are the best we're going to get for the 17R4 / 15R3, until there is miraculously a bios update that will unlock it.

Just curious, it wasn't until newer CPU tech like Kabylake that RAM timings actually provided good benefits right? Would you be able to do another Heaven or Valley, or really any benchmark you've already done on 2400Mhz RAM (stock or aftermarket) but do it once more on your new choice, the HyperX 2667 please. I won't be returning and rebuying new RAM but I am still curious how many FPS or points the faster RAM brings.

Before in the past it was miniscule, 1800Mhz VS even the mid 3000s. But I was shown something over the summer actually that RAM speed nowadays actually does give nice boosts to FPS. However RAM does start to get stupid expensive

I apologize if this has been asked and answered before; what is the maximum thickness of a hard drive that the AW 15 R3 can hold? Can it support 15mm HDDs? I'd like to get a 4TB HDD for mass storage if possible and they only come with a 15mm thickness.

@iunlock: If you want XTU score to be more, HyperX will give you a max score, correct? Looks like we need to remove everything stock and consider after-market computer parts.
Is there any way to tweak RAM timings on 15 r2 with 6700hq/980m?

Here's something better. :) Watch from 4:40 ...the link should take you right there.

Short answer: Yes, pairing faster RAM like the HyperX 2667 @ Cas 15 compliments the new Kaby.

Unfortunately, the option to change the timings is not available on the 17R4, however, it is on the 17R3. I'll push for getting the xmp goodness back in hopefully in a future bios update.

Nice, thanks for the info. But since our laptops are capped at 2667, I am mostly just curious about 2667 vs 2400. Some games I get really close to 4K @60 (RE7 for example) but with ReShade takes it down to like 52-53 depending on the settings. I wonder if having 2667 would give nice boosts at 4K. I can't really see it giving a big boost over 2400, since it is just 267Mhz, but I'm still curious

LiteOn's Specifications for CX2-8B-512 NVMe ssd's is operating temp up to 70C. Your Lite On CX2 NVMe ssd is already up at 82C in a short benchmark and as you can see thermal throttling(even higher max temp than the crippled Toshiba NVMe ssd). If it continues to get hotter as in real work flow, it will throttle even more. Could you post a second screenie of all your ssd,s ?

Ask for replacement ssd's(Samsung). Both you have are pure trash!! Push your ssd's to max temp with benching and go for highest possible ssd temp. Show it to Dell's support.

I agree though. The AW 15 is too big and bulky to take with you everywhere. IMHO it's a desktop replacement that you can take with you occasionally, whereas the AW 17 is just meant to stay in your house, maybe move it around from one room to another if you would want to.

I went with the AW 13 in the end and it's a good performance/portability compromise. Good battery life, plenty of power for 1080P gaming on highest settings and not too big or bulky. It's still even a bit heavier than my Macbook Pro 15" 2009 (when they were still a bit bulky) but the difference is negligible. Ultrabooks are much better when it comes to work that's not very cpu or gpu dependent (i.e. just doing some sheets, working online, perhaps watch some videos). I LOVE my macbook air at work, definitely wouldn't take my AW13 with me for that kind of stuff.

For me the deciding factor between the XPS 15 and AW13 in the end was the futureproofing, and the fact that the XPS15 throttles when gaming. But yeah, that's not very important if it's a work only laptop.

Edit: just realized I was responding to an old post....

Seems about right. Raise the laptop/rear of the laptop a bit, undervolt the CPU a bit, you can probably get low to mid 70s. The core difference shouldn't be that large though so if you can get it to mount more evenly it should get closer to low 70s or even maybe mid 60s

Stick with the old driver for now, I have the same problem (7820hk and 1070 here) it's an incompatibility between the creators update and the nvidia drivers. The hotfix stops you being able to change brightness although it lets you boot, so don't bother with it either.

    Hi,

Not the proper way to do it I know but until I get around to it here's the temps for my AW15R3 7820HK 1070 out of the box playing GTA5 on max settings for 10 minutes. Do they seem good/bad?

    IMG_5213.jpg

    What's the recommendation for
    - overclocking?
    - undervolting?
    - repasting?

I'm no expert on computers so whatever is good for someone without an in depth knowledge of computers and stuff (I used to build desktops 10 years ago so I'm probably confident enough to repaste)

I returned my 13 OLED and now have 7820hk/1070 also. Running latest nv driver with zero issues.

What oc on gpu are you guys seeing btw?

+230/+650 so far, cpu 4.1, -100mv, still to repaste. FS is something like 15800 but obvious gpu throttling. Max temps across cores under 80deg.

would like to ask for help, repasted my unit (conductonaut first) did it horribly, afterwards the GPU wasn't detected. i used arctics for thermal pads, (horrible thoughts came in) double checked, cleaned, repasted and reseated with Kryonaut and placed back all the original thermal pads. its seen. but its not switching when adapter is on... anyone know how i can fix it? already called dell up for a warranty check if things go horrible south.

Epic. Still on stock paste. 2125/2340, 4.3ghz. Might break 17k with re-paste 0.o...

Didn't re-start after driver update so possibly why time measurement off. Either that or raising cache to 4g.

So, I bought a lightning to tb cable for the alienware 15r3. Since there is only 2 usb ports i was going to use it to charge the port. The tb3 in the back dings like something is connected, but it doesnt charge the iphone. Is there a block on it?

    Hey guys,

I need your advice for a desk monitor.

    I have the AW 15R3 HK7820 with the GTX 1070 and I was thinking about getting the Asus ROG PG348Q. It's a 34" 3440x1440 G-Sync IPS panel.

But my question is, will my AW15 be powerful enough to get the most out of this screen in gaming ?

Has anyone purchased any replacement chargers off of Amazon? I just ordered the AGA so I want to keep a charger at home with it and keep one in my bag for traveling so I don't have to keep unplugging one charger. Do any of the 180w chargers on Amazon work? My 15 R3 is 7700HQ and GTX 1060.

I have a charger at work that I found from an older dell. Its a 130w and I have a 1070 in it. It might not get as many fps, but for youtube watching and the occasional paragon game it works perfect.

Anyone have the i5 6300HQ w/1060 model? How are the temps and the performance difference compared to the i7 6700HQ? It's on sale for $949 new + free shipping + no tax on ebay daily deals, thinking about biting. Returned my 13 R3 OLED this morning due to really high temperatures (high 80s-92C) on the GPU.

Are you getting one from delaware? I also dont see anymore discount on the dell outlet store for alienwares. Anyway its a lottery tbh. I got a 1060 with 6700hq and temps are great for me. Max cpu temp is 84c and gpu temp at 73.

It also helps tremendously if you repaste the CPU and GPU yourself.
