I seem to have an issue. Whenever i try to wake up my computer from sleep or close the lid and open it this happens
it goes to checking media presence
    and then
and then when i hit f2 windows boot drive cannot be found on boot option. I have to do a restart so that the windows boot option will come up and have to select it again so the "checking media presence" wont pop up again.

This issue just appeared now after i update my vbios. I am not on the latest bios yet because i cannot afford my system to get bricked in case it fails. any idea why this is happening? @Papusan is it possible that this is happening bec of the vbios update or a windows issue?

It could be due new vBIOS. And you are sure this started right after flashing? You could try reset sBios to Default. Although you have not made any changes in bios before.

Sorry but what does that mean exactly? After using oo shutup10 and regediting the windows maintenance it seems to not do it anymore. I've also disabled the alienware programs from starting up.

P-States. P0 state (the highest power state) Aka your fans have to run more often. And yeah, Windows maintenance has fooled many before ;) It sneaks in and makes that the fan fire up when you don't use your machine  Typical Micro$haft. They want to know what you've done on your machine, HaHa

@jpsm: In the third picture, hit enter on onboard network ipv4, if there's Windows boot manager select that. If that missing, use sergei strelec ISO for win 10 and update the bootloader using "Search & Boot Windows option" or you can use windows on usb to fix MBR.

Windows boot manager is not there but after i restart it boots properly, i do not have to go back to bios to select it. Any idea why this is happening? I could do a recording of everything later and post it

@jpsm: Maybe start over. Use command prompt by using Shift + F10 and use these commands by selecting your appropriate disk ( OS). Connect only your SSD whilst installing.
    convert gpt
    create partition efi size=200
    format quick fs=fat32 label="ESP"
    assign letter="S"
    create partition msr size=16

    create partition primary size=450 id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac
    format quick fs=ntfs label="Recovery" ##replace by Recovery
    assign letter="R"
    gpt attributes=0x8000000000000001
    create partition primary
    format quick fs=ntfs label="OS"
    assign letter="W"
    list vol

I had issues with waking from sleep, apparently it was due to Nvidia drivers. Went back one, cleaned out the registry and everything is fine now.

So the new alienware 15 R3 with 60hz FHD G-Sync display, does it still have cpu heating issues like the uneven hitsink problem and core differentials? Or has it been fixed in this model with 60hz gysnc?

    UPDATE:
So I've had thermal issues since January when I received my first and have been hitting the unlucky end of the chipset lottery since. My initial configuration was a 6700HQ with 1070 and IPS display; replacement was a 7820HK with 1070 and TN 120Hz display; third was the same 7820HK with 1070. Still having thermal issues and now RAM post error (2 red lights followed by 3 blue); have been without a laptop for almost 2 weeks now. The send a replacement chipset but the tech is told to return it and they will be sending me one with my original configuration: 6700HQ and 1070. I do not understand how this is at all possible given that this configuration is no longer in production. I believe they will be sending me a refurbished one instead.

I have long been a proponent for Alienware and have been very patient with them to finally get one that has no issues. Now I merely feel like I am being punished for being unlucky. This is terrible customer service and I am appalled at how they would do this. I had given them the benefit of the doubt but I feel like they have betrayed my trust. ]

All that time on the phone, all the trips back and forth and back to Purolator, all for naught. I was appreciative for the upgrade and them sticking to their exchange policy; but now, I am severely disappointed as I will be accepting a downgrade and likely a used one at that.

TLDR: replacing with original configuration (likely refurbished) after 3 failed laptops that had been upgraded.

Could someone help me with the boot options I need to use to boot from a SSD in this laptop. I have cloned the hardrive to the SSD and want to use the SSD as the OS and hard drive for storage. I am in boot menu. Do I select legacy device or Windows boot manager option. In my older PC I could pick the drive I wanted to boot from but on the alienware it's somewhat more complicated. It refers to onboard nics which I don't know what that means

Hello, Exact same thing just happened to me. Upgraded me to 7820HK and TNpanel after i complain about lightbleed issue on my ips panel. I was very happy and thank them many times. One month later, the TN panel unglued from the bezel and needed to be replaced. Part was back order so they offered a new computer instead. I said ok then if there is no other way. And finnaly downgraded me to 7700HQ and IPS bleeding screen. The person in charge of that exchange said that their policy of offering same configuration applies only to the original order. Now my 7700hq, IPSbleeding screen is in production and the alienware exchange specialist refuse to give me my previous configuration. I offered to pay the difference but they refused it is against their policy. Seems like i will loose this battle since the exchange specialist appears to have all the power in the decision process.

I wonder if this new version of the 15R3 advertised on twitter with the MAXQ 1080 MQ released just yesterday will fix the problem.. ?
I just cancelled my 7820\1070 order that I made yesterday too..
So thankful that I came here and saw all the issues you guys have been having...I mean re-pasting a brand new laptop heatsink setup is just plain terrible quality control...
You would think the CEO would step in and do something..!
Looks like I will have to stick with my 13" 4900mq a little longer...

Anyone have a recommended sleeve I can throw it in before tossing in my backpack? I would prefer to keep any scratches from transport as minimal as possible.

Mine has been pretty perfect so far but I would bet you have a decent chance of getting a lemon. I'm not sure if the new company making the new heat sinks are in the current 1070 R3s but they for sure should be in the max q 1080 laptops.

I had to reinstall again as for some reason my laptop crashed and went into a loop where it was attempting to repair itself. I tried all the solutions online but in the end had to do a factory reset.

Looks like DELL decreased its customers service to Acer's rank.
Reaching 99°C in OC3 and they refused to swap my unit, and don't wan't to send a tech since i warned them the screws start to dangerously wear off after the 4th tech's intervention.
Now i must send it back to factory and stay without a laptop. I though it was AlienWare's customer care not HP's, Acer's, Asus', MSI's one.

If you think you're still giving your money to a trustworthy brand when buying an AlienWare laptop:

Unplug your HDD and boot using Windows boot manager option. After that you can plug it back and system will automatically boot from SSD next time.

Also Dell's normally excellent Premium warranty is down for counting. They offer refurbished Alienware replacement, which can't replace what you bought.

I felt so sorry for all you folks who have gotten the bad AW15R3. Mine has been running flawless and even the cpu never goes above 70 degree after so many benchmar and playing games. My room temp is around 28 degree celsius even. On top of that, my 1070 performs like gtx 1080 stock or 5% less with temp never exceed 65 degree celsius. The only thing that i worry is the bezel seems not glued so well to the screen. Is it common for every laptop or just this AW15R3?

    Hell Guys,

I am hoping someone here can help me out. Dell has been useless when trying to get this information. But I am trying to find a little more information on the Panels that are used in the 60hz IPS G-Sync panels. I currently have the 120hz TN but I am really not digging the washed out colors so was looking to change.

But I need the part number and if anyone knows if its the 30 or 40 pin EDP cable. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Ya I have no idea what's going on, especially how I am to be getting a laptop they claim is new yet the 6700HQ is no longer in production... Their quality control really has fallen off. Never had any issues (that a repaste didn't fix) with my previous m11x, 14, 17 or 15 R2... This is not my first Alienware so I'm surprised by their response...

Why can't I downclock the 7820hk? I'm trying to get it to 2200mhz but it keeps going up to the stock clocks (turbo disabled). I've tried throttle stop with 22x multi and speed step enabled but it wouldn't hold. Tried XTU and set multi to 22 on all cores with turbo disabled and again it wouldn't hold. Just disabling turbo has my temps so much lower with no fps loss in the games I play but I want to see just how low I can go.

edit: derppppp first time using throttle stop. The guide I followed didn't mention you had to use he turn on button. Made it seem like once you set it, it would apply.

I'm getting a replacement for my AW13R3 with 6700HQ and they're replacing it with a Kaby Lake 7700HQ version. The 6700HQ models at this point are most likely refurbished. I had a mobo replacement in my current machine which was a refurb mobo (but a really good one at that though, insanely low temps). The thing is, I didn't even ask for the 7700HQ version, they just automatically did it. I can't find the 6700HQ version on their website anymore (which previously I could using the search) so that means they're probably not being produced anymore. Very odd.

Ya I figured that would be the case but they promised that despite the configuration being out of production, it would be new. I've had bad luck with this model... 3 laptops with bad CPU temps, 4 different motherboards, all overheating and that's with thermal grizzly kryonaut repastes. Losing the chipset lottery that many times in a row sucks....

    There's your problem.

Whoever did the OC profiles for the HK cpus were on crack.

I can assure you that even the best factory heatsink would have problems cooling an OC LV3 profile set in the BIOS.

I didn't use the turn on button, works fine.

Yup and mine is still going up to stock clocks even though I only want it to go up to 2000mhz. It stays at 2000mhz for a little bit after start up but then it boosts up to stock clocks. It seems to be jumping around my 2k limit... Any ideas?

So something could be overriding throttle stop? I just did a revo uninstall of XTU and made sure to reset default settings but its still going over 2000mhz. Going to trial and error by ending each process one by one and hopefully something gives.

Curious for those in this thread. Why did you pick the 15r3 over the 17r4?

Portability. At first I wasn't happy with the screen size but I adjusted and I definitely am glad I chose the 15 considering the weight on my back when its all packed up. Also the 15 just barely fits in my semi huge back pack. I imagine finding a comfortable huge back pack for the 17 would be a bit tough plus I bet the 17 is back breaking.

I've had some bad luck with this model as well (2x failed fans on the heatsink assy., motherboard replacement, many other issues). No overheating on the current model (CPU 65C load and GPU 69C load) but structural issues mainly. They probably still have some left over stock from the 6700HQ sku. I mean, the only thing that's changed is the motherboard so it could just be that they still have some left overs that they can use for cases like yours.

It's weird though that I'm getting a newer model as replacement, since I bought a Skylake model when the Kabylake was available just because it was much cheaper. Weird to say the least.

    Hey Guys,

I have my 15R3 for almost 3 weeks now. 7700hq/1060 gtx.

Temps under full load were all arround 85 +/- 3 degrees.

When i tested it yesterday, the temps went crazy. Whats wrong there ?
