The paste especially cheaper paste breaks down quicker. The heat there things produce breaks it down faster. I’d almost bet a paycheck you stick some kryo paste not even the metal but regular paste and you’ll be golden. Conductant if your tech savvy enough if not regular. The old dell paste they used back in the day was much better than now.

My core difference is within 4c of each other, is that bad? Should I get my heatsink replaced? I was waiting to repaste until I got some Fuji poly but from what your saying...

Max temp I have seen is 83c playing rainbow six siege. Gpu is at 100% load but Im not sure about the cpu package power. I never check that number..

You should do that. Watt=heat. More watt = more heat :)

Very true. What else can I do to bring the watts down besides undervolting? Seems like it is what it is.

Does anyone know what the limitations of the TB3 port on the Alienware 15 R3? I'm looking to pick up a thunderbolt 3 port and i've heard the port has issues.

I get that you would only be able to run the iGPU from the thunderbolt 3 port but are there limitations beyond that? I don't need TB3 to route to my monitor.

I was looking to get the following TB3 port. Would there be any issues?

    4°C ?
No don't worry as long as the Max temp is great.

When it reaches 10-12°C delta that's another story a repaste is mandatory imho.
I have an "original" heatsink came with my preordered unit, at first I was 10°C differential, I'm now running at max 2-3°C differential which is absolutely normal, I repasted it with IC Diamond, then used Metal Conductonaut (but you need to know what you're doing).

If you have great temps then 4°C shouldn't worry you.

Don't use your TB3 for an IGPU, use the dedicated Alienware graphic amplifier port ! It's much better and tailored for it.

What kind of issues did you hear about? I've read that it's a 4 lane port so there shouldn't be any speed problems. As for external GPUs use the amplifier port, like stated earlier, it's a dedicayer 4 lane (if I remember correctly) port. Another question is what GPU do you want to use since the 1060 is already a good choice.

I meant using the thunderbolt port for things other than graphics and displays. I'm still using the HDMI ro mDP to plug in the display as those ports are actually outputs for the 1070. I think you totally misinterpreted my question.

I have no clue why we're talking about GPUs. My question is If I wanted a TB3 dock for external peripherals and drives, would there be issues with using it with the TB3 port on the laptop? I know the Alienware 15 R2 had several thunderbolt 3 port issues.

Again, I'm aware the only GPU that outputs to the TB3 port is the iGPU and not the dedicated GPU so I won't be using it for video.

BTW, is there a way to reduce the absurd fan noise at IDLE when I have CPU performance mode on?

Note I have fan performance mode off. Fans seem to be running at full clip even when just browsing the internet (idle temps in the 30s).

Did you use HWINFO to control fans and forgot to switch back to System Auto before exiting HWINFO?

No, I've never used HWINFO before. However, it seems system auto isn't reliable. At times, the idle fan noise is great. At other times, it basically runs at what sounds like 100% and it won't stop until I restart the computer. Would really appreciate your guidance on solving this!

I just switched from a Clevo laptop and things have been great (the GPU temps in this laptop in particular are surprisingly low) but this is the one exception.

I’ve seen a few 15inch laptops with 120hz ips displays, could this mean the 120hz TN could be swapped out with an IPS one or would there be compatibility issues?

The IPS display is G sync too.

Ifyou have configured fan profiles for both CPU and GPU, then first click on System Auto of GPU and then CPU otherwise both fans will spin at max speeds of 6000.

1080 max Q is equivalent to GTX 1070 mobile. Better off getting GTX 1080 or GTX 1070 without MAX Q's.

the thing is you have cpu performance mode enabled, so it will kick in randomly even on idle depending on ur component loads, fan performance is straight 5200-6200rpm from boot.. Yes at hwinfo fan settings set both to auto.. if still spins at idle.. then its def ur cpu performance mode.. cant do anything about that.. its DELL EC..

Problem is the one you show there is the 60Hz IPS G-Sync panel. I've had both and despite the colours, the TN 120Hz panel is vastly superior and has spoiled me such that I cannot go back to 60Hz. If they offer a 120Hz IPS in the 15R4? Awesome and that would be an improvement. If they offer an OLED in the 15R4? That would be perfect. The OLED operates essentially at 240Hz which would be incredible.

Hello, I just installed the last "Intel Management Engine Interface Driver" from today (13.12.2017). After I installed it I've ran SA00086_Windows and the tool told me again that my system is vulnerable. I am using the last version of the bios - 1.2.1 which NOW I don't see it in the dell drivers page (WOW). Is someone experiencing my problems?

Hmmm very strange. I do not see it in drivers page with my "Service Tag", but when I've removed it I saw the firmware update.. For first time I see same models with different information. Thank you for provided information :) I am going to install it!

P.S. I just installed it and voila - "Based on the analysis performed by this tool: This system is not vulnerable. It has already been patched."

Thank you once again for telling me this! Have a nice evening from Bulgaria :)

    I am skylake user with i7 6700HQ.

Did you notice anything strange after updating?
I opened up the file to see if it flags my system as Incompatible. Luckily, the tool opened fine on 15 r2. Didn't run it. Do you get correct model no. while running the tool?

There was some one that pointed out that there is a way to pull the fans down by using this:

    1. Go into bios, Advanced>Performance Settings and set your power limits to 0, both of them.
    2. Use whatever software you use, XTU or Throttlestop, to increase the Power limits to what you would like them to be in windows.

This will keep your fans down when idle, just like they are when you boot into the machine with no overclock applied

This was a reddit post, and i replied to it, but somehow i cannot find the post right now. i will keep looking for it and credit the person who posted this

ok guys, credit where credit is due: https://www.reddit.com/r/Alienware/comments/7c4gxu/unlock_power_limits_on_any_k_series_alienware/

Hello everyone, a question about the temperature of the CPU and GPU on my Alienware 15 r3.
Spec: I5 6300HQ and 1060GTX. repaste with Grizly LM
On the screenshots that were on the forum at all the temperature of the GPU is ~ 58, my temperature is ~ 66, its normal? Or repaste again?

    Aida64+Heaven Benchmark= https://yadi.sk/i/S-RFm5W33REKyS

Is it normal that the temperature immediately drops by 10 degrees after the load falls?

    Thank you in advance

Hi again. Today I noticed that the heat pipe on the video card has stopped carrying heat. The external examination showed no damage. Therefore, it was decided to order a cooling system. In my laptop is AT1JM0030C0( https://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=25030). I found the store where I have it, but I saw another cooling system for Alienware 15 r3 - ATM1JM002ZCO( https://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=24584). Which one is better to buy? And will not there be compatibility problems?

Hi, anyone knows a good argument for dell support to get the battery replaced? I bought it in april and it now has 26% wear. A few months ago I asked for a screen replacement because I had some dead pixels, and in the meantime I told them that my battery had 17% wear (notice how worse it's gotten), even showed them screenshots. They came up with some bs that it's normal and that the expected lifespan of the battery is only a year. Also, I believe the battery discharges on heavy games

Also if I recall correctly, they also made me show them the Bios where it says "the battery is performing normally", so they leave you cornered there

Dell offer 1 year warranty on theeir battery. Most OEM's offer this. The battery in my 2013 model Alienware 17 is still in good shape (3-4% wear). But it doesn't use the battery as power source when it's conneted to the AC.
