They gave you good intel (I already reported on this). They are going with the 7820 with the GTX 1080 and UHD display. They already notified the marketing team to update the site. They cannot take down the current configurations because then Alienware won't have a GTX 1080 on offer... they are essentially accepting bogus orders knowing they are going to be dead in the water.

You are incorrect. They are 100% right.
There is not parts shortage and they cannot place an exchange for the configuration that's currently online. If you placed an exchange prior to me updating everyone of this event, it's dead.

Hmm all this makes me wonder what will happen to my order. It's like a kinder egg. Maybe I'll end up with the 78720hk/gtx1080/uhd instead of the 6820hk/gtx1080/qhd I ordered. As I am in France I wonder if the units are built from different factories...

Can any of you guys check how warm your power brick is when your battery is fully charged? My 240W power brick is super warm, like the heated air from a car's heater core, battery is full, just from running a Youtube playlist for a few hours.

My heart rate increases and I sigh just a little bit every morning when I slide it out of my bag at work ... as I reverentially and gently rest it upon the desk, I can't help but run my hand over the top, marveling at the solidity of the thing, the lines, the understated grace...

Oh" well. You have to stick on older firmware if you want max out of your machine. And I expect you need to update the firmware if you want Dell's "advertised" higher graphics TDP with next Bios release. And what power settings do you think Dell will put in this firmware? More Hybrid functionality which will kill the battery even more? Or crippling the power settings for cpu OC?

Repost of my original post #3158

    UPDATE:

Sorry guys, I retract my statement about bios 1.0.9. I've spoke too soon.

If you're on 1.0.9, I'd suggest that you flash out of it right away to 1.0.2.

I have had three systems on 1.0.9 while testing and ironically all three within a day or two from each other wouldn't turn on so I had to hard reset all of them! It about gave me a heart attack....

There was a similar issue with the 17R3 where a newer bios was fine for a while, then bam....it caused a lot of headaches with it not turning on and it requiring a hard reset.

Somethings not right here....it seems like flashing up (going from an older bios to a newer one) is causing some issues, whereas rolling back the bios does not seem to have any negative effects.

BIOS 1.0.2 it is... the only drawback for those who are lazy :p is that you have to manually load your profiles to adjust the power limits and OC settings. Takes literally seconds, not a big deal, but worth mentioning....

BIOS 1.0.9 works fine and there are no known issues that I've come across, yet?

1.0.9 holds the values you set in bios, without having to use XTU to tweak for the settings to stick.

I just go straight into using TS to tune.

Also, the fan profile on 1.0.9 are much improved. It's more aggressive in a good way and they change like they're suppose to. That was one thing annoying about the previous bios's in that the fans stayed on forever.

So far so go. No battery drain issues.[s/]

Better yet...how about reporting a fake TDP on the screen to make people feel good? LOL....

Well there's a bug of going from an older to a newer bios and it's been a common trend even in the previous gen AW's ....

This issue will be made known to those that need to know in hopes for a fix.... only that company that makes the bios knows what the issue is.... at least lets hope?

I can't personally speak for 1.06 or 1.08 but definitely 1.09. According to Dell tech support we're stuck on 1.02 for now. They said it's a known issue and that they're working on it.

How to disable battery charging on the new Alienware?

Lenovo laptops have an option to limit battery charge to 60% (Lenovo Energy Manager - Conservation mode). Is there a similar option in the new AW's?
My laptop is usually plugged in and the last thing I want is always having a 100% charged battery in a hot running system. That degrades battery life quickly.
I cannot see "Desktop mode battery charge" option anywhere. Installed the Alienware OSD application too.

This sucks. I have mine on 1.0.9. The performance increase is very noticable in games that use 4 cores compared to 1.0.8. I have the 6700hq though. When you do a hard reset you mean some sort of a bios reset with a button combo or flashdrive or something or is it more involved?

Hi guys, quick question from my side:
What kind of stand do you use for your AW? Do you just keep it flat on a desk, covering the bottom part of the vents or do you use some sort of cooling pad/other solution?
I know I can stick a book or pad under it, but my heart will just break using such a primitive method

To those with good temps, how loud are the fans in (decibels) while stressing the CPU/GPU? My AW17R4 out of the box max temps while playing BF1 Ultra 1080p are 82c for CPU and 72c GPU but the fans are 62dB and 38dB idle.
Im just using an app on my iphone to measure the decibels by placing the phone 2inches from exhaust vents. I'm still looking for a quiet laptop with 55dB or less when gaming.

Guys is it normal that fans are loud in idle? They are very annoying in a silent room. I checked temps and they are great under stress test and in idle (33° cpu). Is there a way to reduce fan speed? How can I check the fan speed? Thank you

EDIT: Sometime I see clock speed up to 3.4 - 3.8 Ghz for some second during idle or minor stuff. Is it normal?

Indeed. Thanks for the re-confirmation in supporting this fact.

BIOS 1.0.9 is a no go.... run while you can and flash to 1.0.2 and stick with it until further notice.

Your panel is made by a AUO. Lgphillips and chi me are the other manufacturers of the 1080p panel. Lg Philips is regarded as the better panel of the lot, which was also used on the Alienware r3.

Which BIOS are you using? What frequency is your CPU running at when under full load from stressing it with something like OCCT? What are the temps when under this load?

There's a known issue with every BIOS before 1.0.9 that the fans are loud when they don't need to be at idle

I know what iunlock has posted but there are other perspectives as well. I've been using 1.0.9 for over a week now and it's rock solid, every setting from BIOS sticks perfectly every time which I even had problems with in 1.0.2 (this could have been something else though) and the issue of noisy fans is resolved. Temps are also great, it really does seem very stable to me. Perhaps iUnlock did something else on all 3 of those laptops which made the problem seem like it was BIOS?

    Similar experience,

I wonder is there any other issue with 1.0.9 we aren't aware of? under the hood so to speak? lol

I have only had the computer for a little over a week, but I updated to 1.0.9 straight away and haven't had a single problem. I didn't even know there was a problem reported with 1.0.9.

The computer has been used daily, this control the sound system in my studio.

@iunlock, if we haven't experienced any issues with crashing/bricking/etc are there any other reasons to avoid 1.0.9? Just wanting to make sure there isn't anything I am unaware of which could cause issues w/ system stability and/or performance.

    Thanks!!

Over a week is a bit too soon to deem it as being rock solid. :)

For regular users and if you stay on 1.0.9 it may be fine. However, it could still end up being a ticking time b0000m8. (didn't want to spell out the word lol.)

Anyway there seems to be a higher risk of black outs when going up in bios rather than rolling back down.

    ::iunlock::

That's the sad thing, because bios 1.0.9 does seem to be improved with everything else. It was nice to have the values stick without having to change them every time upon boot like on 1.0.2, but I don't mind.... 1.0.9 seems to have a more practical fan curve as well.

The best way to describe it is that 1.0.9 feels more refined, but with a retro ticking virus lurking around the code somewhere, while 1.0.2 is just a 'go all out' type of feel. Very raw. Petal to the metal. It's not perfect, but it feels more unlocked as my gpu watts are higher with 1.0.2 than 1.0.9.

Negative ghost rider. All three have different set ups with the only similarity of flashing up to 1.0.9...That's what makes it ironic.

There were similar issues with the previous gen AW's...

Yeah, my power brick definitely isn't normal. I got lucky in that I don't have any serious problems, but unfortunately I've got a dozen little things that are driving me crazy.

I contacted support about some weird sound effects programmed into my number pad and a faulty touchpad, and the first thing he checked was the bios. He wanted to make sure I wasn't on 1.0.9, and I'm not, I'm on 1.0.2, so there's definitely problems with 1.0.9

Hey guys, anyone else constantly hitting the power limit on their 1070 even at stock settings? My GPU clock and no load limit are all over the place.

Also, what temp and wattage does this card start throttling?? My max temps are only high 60s. Would repasting help? Any advice would be much appreciated.

So I finally got around to hooking mine up to my Amplifier (GTX 1080) and its great! Highest score yet for timespy on OC3. I haven't oc the 1080 yet but was on oc3. Temps were cool at 72. Sure no GPU use in the laptop but still pretty solid.
