I got banned from FB forum on Alienware by one of the moderators mentioned above. They didn't like what I posted about the Dell stamp paste being garbage. Wow talk about not being able to speak your mind. The post wasn't even that bad. I stated repasted to Grizzly Kryonaut from the garbage factory Alienware thermal stamps!! Lmao.

My fully loaded 17 R4 is so sweet. I love the 120hz monitor. However, looks like I hit thermal throttling on 2 cores during Doom (max 93c). This is an outlet gtx 1080 with 1gig ssd (Toshiba) and 32 gig ram.
I am comfortable enough to repaste or send to iunlock, but I'm wondering whether I should just return it? I've been hearing rumors of a new 1440p ips monitor (the TN banding is terrible), and quite possibly a i7 7280. What do you think? Return and wait for refresh?
By the way, I figured out why I was only getting 19k gpu in Firestrike. It was benching at the native resolution (1440p) vs. the standards 1080p. I changed it in the settings and get >21k gpu. -

Yes, did an old asus that was severely overheating. Got the tools to take it apart, just a case now of ordering the pads/paste and finding a quiet afternoon to do itPete Light likes this. -

Anyways, I'm debating sending it back mostly because of the screen, and waiting for the revised screen/7820 to drop and then just haggle with Dell Canada on a brand new one. -

Am I limited to how much SSD/Storage I can have on this thing?
Looking to get either 500GB+ SSDs, already replaced the 2.5 drive with a 500GB SSD..
And also, besides SSD slot 3, what are the two other types of SSD's I can get? -

Hey Team,
Just got my R4. I know this is likely buried in the threads already so bear with me.
I noted that the system slowly discharges battery while under load. My R2 used to do this but I switched to the larger 240W power supply and it stopped. I am using a 240W on the R4. Have people a) noted that the system also does this and b) been switching to 330?
Also, anybody noticing any thermal throttling spikes while gaming? Over an hour, I saw a few peaks in XTU, nothing major, but the temps weren't that high so I thought it a bit odd. My R2 used to throttle like crazy for minutes at a time so this is nothing by comparison. Just wondering if I should be more worried.
Thanks! -
Unfortunately your post doesn't really tell us anything. Run 30 mins OCCT and post a screenshot with hwinfo showing temps etc and that'll help us judge if yours is normal or bad

Hi everyone, I have a kaby lake 17r4 with 7700hq, 1070 gtx, 256 pci-e ssd, 1 tb hard sata drive, 16g 2667mhz ram, Uhd in midwest U.S.A that arrived from Tennessee on Feb 9. I have installed bios 1.05 and also installed all driver updates from dell website that were dated after my estimated manufacture date/order date or that did not appear to be current. All updates were successful including Realtek drivers and I retained Alienware sound center and have experienced no sound issues. I have occasionally experienced slight lag within windows start screen but it is brief and seems to have subsided over time. I have updated Nvidia driver via Geforce Experience succesfully. So far I have experienced no significant issues other than the camera only loading about half of the time upon first startup after machine being off for overnight or any lengthy time. Time spent here and on Reddit did have me concerned about cpu and gpu temps but I have downloaded hwinfo64 and stress tested using alienware support assist, xtu and heaven benchmark and saw now real concerns with temps. I hear the fans kick in when stress testing and slow upon test completion back down to nearly silent. Fans do spin up from time to time but only slightly and for short periods. I contemplated downloading other stress testing software like OCCT or Prime95 but I am not sure the necessity at this point. I've never overclocked a cpu nor do i have the desire to delve into such realms. I just want to enjoy exploring some modern games from time to time alongside using my laptop for work. I believe that my cpu only supports overclocking within the design structure of what is referred to as Turbo Boost. I say this not even clearly understanding what Turbo Boost is but I did see my clock speeds in the low 3ghz range during stress tests so I assume it is working. While I do find the world of overclocking interesting and may one day explore it I think I am limited (correct me if I'm wrong) by my choice of hardware as of now. My plan is to use my laptop for whatever games i see fit to play and if I experience problems playing games I will address them on a case by case basis and I am ok if I have to dial back some settings to make a game playable. If trouble comes my way I will seek advice here as I really appreciate the vast base of knowlege here. I will be happy to provide feedback about my machines performance for those who want to know. I feel I am in good hands here but somehow I feel confident that I am fortunate to so far have a quality build from dell. I am learning as I go and enjoy reading all posts. My overall impressions of the brand are good but I find it concerning that some have had the experiences they have had, hopefully those situations will be resolved over time.

To answer you: I have NOT noticed thermal throttling on my r4 with the 6700hq and 1070. I do notice throttling down to around base clock speeds of 2.6ghz sometimes in intel xtu however this is probably for a VERY short period as I do not notice any dropped frames in game when this happens. With the 240w power supply my battery does drain to 95% several times a day while plugged in. Not sure why.
Yeah I had the old r2. The thing used to throttle like crazy. This one I can actually play games on although the issues with it are still unacceptable by my standards. -

Hi.
I am new at Alienware and bought me an Alienware 17 R4. I could save some money by Sky Lake and then they just run 10% so I got a really good discount on this machine. See spec here:

I got this machine for 2000 Euro, im from Denmark.
I think the 6700HQ is okay, because for the same Price i could get a 7700HQ but the only the GTX 1060. Im looking forward to get this and maybe i need to re paste it, that I have read a lot about the temp.
I wich there were G-Sync in it,but FAST SYNC is okay for me at high fps.
Thansk for all the feedback in here, it really help me take a good choice. -

The 7700HQ is a poor chip for future proofing. It's limited to max turbo boost of 3.4GHz on all four cores and there's nothing you can do to change that. You should however stress your CPU and make sure it's running at 3.4 all the time. I also have this chip

I know this was discussed about 200 pages back, so pardon my inquiry ... but what bags are you all using with your AW17's?? Thanks!

I'm interested in the current situation with a new 1080 Ti, will it be available soon for AW17 R4, or it's a whole new process.. And will it affect the price of 1080, will see

Meeting with Dell: 03-01-17
As you guys have seen there's the new vbios for the GTX 1080 with reports of the TDP reaching ~200W. This isn't an official-official release, so take caution if you'll be flashing this. Please make sure you know what you're doing first, because if you brick your system, this is your responsibility. If you have any questions, feel free to ask those on here as there are a lot of people who can help you.
They are also working on the QC issues and am fully aware of those units still slipping past the gates and ending up in your hands. In short, the ones that are responsible when assembling the units are under heat and scrutiny....so as we speak, things are getting addressed and handled. This was heavily stressed and the certain people we've spoke with (higher ups within the company) want this ironed out just as bad as we do.
With all of that out of the way, March 13th is the date we should see the new AW17R4 (7280HK / New QHD Display / GTX 1080 on the new vbios).

Just thought I'd share...
This is on the original vbios. (Not even the new vbios) Pretty interesting peak, which is cool to see, but means nothing....
But now with the new vbios, we should be able to stretch the GTX 1080 even more....and it does....
BEFORE new vbios hitting 194W:

I have an alienware17r4 6820hk with QHD 1080gtx on the way too, delivery time is march 21-29.
Is that mean I am getting the new QHD and and vbios for 1080gtx? I heard the new QHD will be IPS panel, can you confirm with that? will they exchange my 6820hk to 7820hk since the new Alienware 17r4 QHD unit is coming with 7820hk.

The new vbios is panning out to be pretty nice.
This is just a preliminary casual run...
Note: Graphics Score -> 24131
TDP ~180W+ and tapping into the mid 190W's....
More to come....
Just the beginning...Last edited: Mar 2, 2017 -

The focus is not about the CPU right now...it's about tuning the GPU. -

Finally broke 18K with no effort just relaxing on my desk.
The TDP stays north of 180W frequently during a 3DMark loop and peaks into the upper 190W's.
196.543W in particular for this Run at only 55C. Just crazy.

Stay tuned as I'll keep everyone updated fresh off of the skillet.pathfindercod likes this. -
207W! @ only 61C. This is traditional paste by the way (Grizzly Kyronaut), not LM. Crazy good cooling system.

By the way, it may seem repetitive, but it deserves to be shared for those who have ever doubted the cooling system of the AW17R4, when all along I've been saying that it is the best cooling system I've seen in a system in ratio to both its size and form factor.Pete Light, Wormwood, pathfindercod and 1 other person like this. -

I really hope everyone gets a bump to the 7820HK's for waiting so long on these systems. I hear rumors the new QHD is IPS... that is quite spectacular and finally an uncompromising solution. Please let this be an under promise over deliver situation.iunlock likes this. -
