All good. All depends on your usage. But 16GB is minimum today.

Won't the ram work in dual channel up to the amount of the lowest capacity stick? I though I read that someplace... Could be wrong though

Mixing ram with different timings can cause stability and performance issues.

... In terms of real world usage for most people, I agree even a 2.5" Sata SSD is more than enough...heck with gaming, virtually zero difference if at all.
I have a few of the 1tb and 512GB toshiba sticks, but those speeds are: -> Thanks to Samsung as most of the high performing ones that are close to the Samsung Evo, all use Samsung chips (controller module).
But yea, at the end of the day, most decent m.2's are plenty for most users.Last edited: Mar 19, 2017 -

Only problem is you can place the order with Dell but it will be postponed and then cancelled after a couple weeks.... From looking at the photos of the internals on the 17r3 and 17r4, the 40pin 17r3 cable might work on the 17r4. There is a slight difference in how the camera connection is wired but it does not look like it would be an issue. -

I wasn't just wondering (since I ordered) anyone get there new Alienware 17 R4 7820hk with GTX 1080?
Would you mind sharing your review?
There is the TN panel which iunlock says is fixed (correct me if I am wrong)
They added thermal pads.
(Where do I get .1 mm thermal pad or should I get thermal tape)
Do we still have to bend the heat sink to apply proper pressure?
A review will be much appriciated thank you. -
Earliest ETA is March 27th I think… another week or so till we see a review IMHO

Soooo..... raise your hand if you are one of the first ones.

OCCT with a -150 undervolt I get 72 max, usually sticks around mid 60's.
However, gaming (only tried Witcher 3 on max settings) I generally average around mid 70's and max 82.
Should I repaste? I never done it before and to be honest I would be very afraid of messing things up.
Edit: woops, this is the 15 r3. Re-posting there. -

So...is anyone feeling left out by not getting a free game for their laptop purchase (ie, purchased directly through Dell, which didn't offer promo's)...?
AND, did you get Tobii eye tracking...???
Well,....if you did get Tobii, you might want to turn on your Tobii (bottom right toolbar) and check if you have a little blue message icon to say you have a free game waiting.
THATS RIGHT!! - Free copy of Ghost Recon Wildlands! Woot woot. I discovered it, and was like...wtf is this....followed the bouncing ball, and boooiyah!
I thought the Tobii eye tracker was SUCH a gimmick at first,....until I played Ghost recon Wildlands with it.
Man....it really helps quickly locate/identify enemy contacts in a short amount of time by just simply looking at them (PS - don't be a noob like me and think that the Eye tracker isn't accurate - peel off the thin protective sticker off of it, THEN re-calibrate!!).

If it's free it's only the beta or trial version. No way it's the full version.
-
Definitely the full game (unrestricted version) with access to the whole map, etc. Remember, it is the standard game, however, not the deluxe.
When you click through your Tobii program, it takes you to the tobii website where you register. It then gives you a game voucher code, which you then redeem in a uPlay account (Ubisoft's equivalent of Steam) and it adds it to your uPlay account. Then just download it & play it. I'd screenshot it for you, but there's no point - people with Alienware 17 R4 + Tobii will understand once they get the game for free.
(for the skeptics, just google "Tobii Ghost recon wildlands free game alienware 17")
AND, in game you get a free Tobii shirt - it looks ghay as hell #^_^
Besides, I didn't think you could access the beta anymore, anyways, once the actual game's been released...
If anyone wants to play co-op with me, look me up (Ty13rDurd3n)Last edited: Mar 20, 2017 -
Wow. That great. The game is 60 bucks ! Tobii eye must be suffering because to offer this means they are not getting anyone to register for it! There has to be a catch. Nothing is free

Hi everyone
Thanks for sharing your experiences!
I'm looking to buy my first gaming laptop to get back into the computer gaming world (been a LONG time). I've heard great things about the keyboard--is it, for those who have had the chance to compare--quite notable better than other gaming laptop keyboard (i.e. asus ROG, MSI titan, etc.). Would love a little insight on this
Anyone have any specific recommendations on how to spec out one from HIDevolution (this is the model I'm thinking about: http://www.hidevolution.com/alienware-17-r4-gtx-1070-7700hq-custom-built-to-order.html).
Cheers! -
From my experience, the keyboard on the AW laptops is the best for its type and the keyboard on the MSI and ASUS are great for chiclet style keys. If you're used to the traditional keys like what is on the AW, you'll be happy with those as it has great tactile feedback and the keys when pressed are pretty confident.
As for chiclet style, it's just one of those things where people love it or hate it. I will say though, even if you do desire a chiclet style keyboard, there are other factors that may turn you off on the MSI or Asus that would outweigh the key options. -

I purchased a used 17r4 from a buddy of mine that has the 1440 QHD GSync screen (6700HQ, 1070 - ordered originally 11/2016). I immediately noticed the banding a lot of folks are talking about. I knee jerk reacted and called Dell tech support (didn't do my research first). They are coming on 3/22 to replace my screen - it was shipped on 3/20. I seen a twitter post saying that new QHDs are available on 3/21 - today. So my questions are:
1) Has anyone gotten a screen that didn't have the banding through replacements that saw it before?
2) Does anyone know if the new QHD will be compatible?
3) What are the odds I got it or did my knee jerk reaction cost me?
I love the machine - this is just like a train wreck I can't stop looking at. It is minor, I saw the watermark responses and such. I just cannot unsee it.
For what it is worth, I do know the panel that shipped is the same part number from Dell: WJGD4

Hi guys
Bit of a weird question but has anyone come across a Laptop Rollerbag that will fit the 17R4? Ideally one that has a separate laptop compartment and a compartment at the front for storing other stuff like passports etc
I don't know why it's proving to be rather difficult to find one - they're either all for smaller laptops or they're very large and effectively a rolling suitcase with no laptop compartment...
Max Dimensions of the bag should be 55cm x 45cm x 25cm to be able to get it in the Cabin of a plane.

Hi. From Dell give me the option to change my 17r4 6820hk gtx 1070 for a 17r4 7820hk gtx 1070. Is it worth to make the change? The 17r4 7820hk has temperature problems too?
-
Well, if they give you the chance and it doesn't cost you anything i'd do it.
We don't know yet if there will be temperature problems too, because the R4s with the 7820hk just launched about 10 days ago. -
Were there specific concerns you have with MSI or Asus? Would love to hear about your experiences.
Cheers! -

Their own website says the offer can take days to appear. I'm not saying you're wrong. Just saying you're jumping to conclusions.

To determine if you're throttling can you run hwinfo configured like in my sig below for 8 hrs OCCT during the two tests you mentioned and post the screenshots back?

Just for kicks I decided to test out the new speed shift technology to see if I could get better performance in 2 core games. For those who don't know speed shift is like speed step. It adjusts your core multiplier based on cpu utilization and number of active cores. While speed step used the operating system to change speeds, speed shift runs entirely on the processor and is thus more responsive. In addition you can use throttlestop to configure speed shift to favor performance or battery life as well as to set its upper and lower throttling limits.
I noticed that speed shift was off by default (for 6700hq it may be different for other cpu's).
6700hq is locked at 3.5ghz 1 core, 3.3ghz 2 core, 3.2ghz 3 core, and 3.1ghz 4 core.
Tested using heroes of the storm because the game uses 2 cores and has a low gpu load so it is easily cpu bottlenecked.
I found that I was able to run a higher average clock rate and it seemed to give me higher fps by 5 or so vs no speed shift.
However it should be mentioned that I still got MUCH better performance being locked at 3.1ghz with bios 1.0.9. ( WARNING BIOS 1.0.9 is known to cause issues that could temporarily brick your system)
If you are not running bios 1.0.9 and you want to try out speed shift get throttlestop. The "speed shift - EPP" setting controls performance, 0 is performance 255 is energy efficiency. "Min" and "Max" are the upper and lower multiplier limits.Pete Light and Vasudev like this. -

Any updates 17r4 with gtx1080 and 7820hk QHD1440p
How long before we see some testing numbers? -
Hi i need some help before I buy one of 2 listed :
I'm going to use my laptop for gaming only. I know out of the box some or most of have temps issues.
Alienware 17 r4, i7 6700hq, GTx 1070, 2560x1440p 120 g sync, 256ssd plus 1tb hdd, tobi eye,
Alienware 17 r4, i7 6820hk, GTx 1080, 2560x1440p 120 g sync, 256 ssd plus 1 Tb hdd, tobi eye.
Both are refurbished aw with 1070 cones with 3 year warranty and 1080 one comes with 1 year warranty and small dent on the rear panel. I don't bother about that dent. The things is 6820hk is only 100£ more then 6700hq. But for gaming and better temps should i go for 6700hq 1070 instead of 6820hk and gtx 1080?
Does 6700hq with 1070 and 2560x1440p panel hold games at 100fps. Mostly I play battlefield 1 online. I know we have so many specialist here so I appreciate for any advice. Thanks
