    Hey guys!
I'm gonna buy a new Alienware today. I can't decide between the 15 and the 17 model. GTX1070 vs GTX1080 and QHD.
How is the QHD 120Hz monitor? Does it use PWM? Are people happy with it?
Is the computer generally a reliable machine?
What kind of battery runtimes are you guys getting? Only Wifi browsing and simple productivity sofware use.

    Thanks!

Well the smoothness in every frame is actually the best thing about G-Sync in my opinion. I'm not a pro gamer but now I've had G-Sync on 120Hz I'll never go back, it makes such a massive difference which you'll miss if you've used it before

As I was repasting one of my units last night...I used the excess LM on the spreader to paint over this aluminium block to show how it reacts...

It is often talked about, but not visually seen by many.

This is only seconds after LM came in contact with the aluminium block.

Ooooh yes that video... traumatizing eh?

LM is also good for removing the pins on the bottom of the AMD chip so that it can be used on any Intel motherboard. 2-in-1 as it'll run cooler too...LM Magic.

Maybe LM can be used for punishing Al Heatsinks which doesn't perform well enough.

So I just bought my Alienware 17 R4, with FHD screen and HQ processor. 1070 graphics card. but sadly i only ordered 8GB DDR4 RAM and a 1TB Sata drive, can someone please point me to a really good m.2 drive for this laptop and also to a ram upgrade, would really appreciate it. Thanks I would require links to the exact product that will work in my laptop. Was thinkning samsung 960 for m.2 a 256GB. But unsure what one to get that will fit and if it will need screws or heat spreaders. Please help me i will be very much appreciative of it.

You should be able to change your order if you give them a call...
I wouldn't get any less storage than a 512GB. even that wasn't enough for me so I bought another 1TB soon after

I see that Alienware's top 17 R4 machine comes with 1080 and UHD. Does it mean there is no G-Sync? The reason I asked is I am getting my second replacement in last 2 month, and they upgraded my Memory 16GB to 32GB, my SSD from 256 to 512 and my GPU from 1070 to 1080 while still having UHD on my replacement.

The top config with UHD does not have G-Sync.
The only screen that has G-Sync is the QHD 120Hz panel.

I didnt even think about that. There would be no fluctuating timing offset from render to display. So every animation and camera pan would have less jitter.

Nvidia inspector exposes a hidden driver value you might like called "silk smoothness". It attempts to deal with the same problem on the driver level and from my experience does a really good job of it in overwatch.

Also this is more evidence that the eye and brian can percieve timing differences of a couple milliseconds.

Also keep in mind the QHD screen is a trifecta of goodness that makes it so nice and creates the smooth, not just one thing.
-G-Sync to sync frames with the fresh (UHD has no G-Sync.)
-120Hz to have high enough refreshes to keep up with high frames. (UHD is 60Hz)
-4ms response time (the UHD has 27ms response time)

Hey Everyone! I tried to give alienware another try. I returned the old machine because of the heat problems. I now got the new kabylake. And within 24 hours of use, it begins do this! Check pictures ^^

    I have tried everything!

Vbios, bios 1.0.8/1.0.5, new graphics drivers (old, new, the ones linked on dell), max fans. Nothing have worked...

I'm getting close to think the GPU is defekt... :/

It happens when it need to perform, and sometimes random... and i havent used MSI afterburner or done anything different from what dell have given me.

I will now try to reinstall windows! Could be a bad update..

Does it do it in the bios screen? I believe hit f2 when you start it up. If it happens there then you know it is not windows or driver related.

Spot on and good points i'd forgotten. I have a beautiful 55" 2016 4K LG OLED TV that I simply never use because the QHD screen is so good and that's saying something since it's the reason I bought a laptop with a 1080 in it was to make full use of 4K gaming. I notice the lack of smoothness on the TV even though it's rock solid 60 FPS!
Must be said though the colour accuracy and HDR on the TV is incredible though...

I just pulled the trigger on an Alienware 17 with 7820HK and GTX1080. Went with the 1080p screen because there are times battery life will matter to me, I've waited years for good IPS color, and because of worries some of my work tools won't scale effectively at higher resolutions.

    * Has anyone used 2 external monitors off an A17 w/o using the Graphics Amp? Any issues?

    * Is it possible to use an external monitor with GSync even if my model doesn't have it for the internal monitor?

    * If I had to pick... would DDR4-2600 @ CL16, or DDR4-2400 @ CL14 be better? I believe those to be my options for 32GB.

    * What kind of discounts do people usually get? I managed 15%, but good grief! The hell I was put through over the phone was ridiculous. Its sad when companies make it so hard to give them money.

    Thanks!

How does one get a FHD with the 1080GTX? In USA you have 2 options neither of which are FHD.

The first configuration listed with the 7820HK has an FHD option and a UHD option. The next configuration with the 7820HK has only FHD listed. The third configuration with the 7820HK has only QHD listed.

Dell really doesn't make it easy for you to give them money :(

7700HQ is a hefty upgrade from 6700HQ. The problem is CPU clocks are fixed and not overclockable. It will last until your university program.

I have an Alienware 17 R4, with FHD screen and HQ processor. 1070 graphics card. but sadly i only ordered 8GB DDR4 RAM and a 1TB Sata drive. I have just ordered a 250 GB Samsung 960 Evo M.2 today but still looking for recommendations on RAM, I want 16GB but need to know what is the best to get. (If you could provide an Amazon.co.uk link that would be great. Thanks I would require links to the exact product that will work in my laptop cause i dont want to mess this up. Was thinking Corsair vengence but sems to be 204 pin instead of 260 pin. I just want to be pointed to the best 16GB kit i can get and ill pay whatever for it.

    Thanks so much in advanced

I installed the Creators Update (1703) onto my 17R4 yesterday. Everything functioned just fine, except for Windows Hello. When I tried to use it, it would either state "Unrecognized," or "Windows Hello has been disabled by your Administrator" (or words to that effect). Which one of those it would state, seemed to be random. (So, sometimes, it would think Windows Hello worked, but the camera couldn't identify my face -- other times, it wouldn't work at all.) I am a member of a domain, so I thought that maybe they changed something in the GPO, or rather policy definitions, so I updated the central store with the policy definitions from 1703, and it still didn't work. What's more, I noticed no changes in the policy definition options controlling Windows Hello when editing the Group Policy.

I tried updating the Tobii drivers, but they were already up to date. I tried removing and reinstalling them (which was known to fix some issues with Windows Hello back when the Anniversary Edition, 1607, dropped), but no dice. Eventually, I rolled back to 1607, and Windows Hello immediately started working again (keeping in mind that the GPO Central Store is still based on 1703).

Other than that, and 1703 changing some of the Start Menu (Win+X) items, I really didn't have any issues. Everything seemed to work, and honestly, a casual user would not have been able to notice the changed version, as there were very few visible changes. I'd really like to get Windows Hello working though. Any ideas?

Question. I had an Alienware 17 R3. Using the graphic amp and a 1080 FTW with it. The laptop died. It was the Best Buy model. Best Buy said that it will give me 1500 in store credit. A little concerned about getting a R4 after reading everything here.

    Thinking about this one:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/alienwa...id-state-drive-silver/5713010.p?skuId=5713010

Is there a way to know from just the model number or something that its one of the newer production ones. Thanks. Please be kind. Sorry for the long post.

if it was me I'd wait for a holiday for the prices to drop 200-400 due to a sale. Luckily when I ordered mine in october, it was just barely within the 30days return period for the thanksgiving/black friday sales. I searched around a lot before ordering and most things I found said they really don't have sales on laptops except before school, but they definitely happen much more often

    I would buy directly..
You have a better chance to find a deal.
    The warranty is handled better.
Plus the stock has been through multiple hands.
    Just my opinion.

Well I am like 99.9% sure Dell price matches BestBuy and vice versa, that's why I say to wait for a holiday sale. When I bought my 15R3, it was like 400$ off (400 and some random numbers). not only that but they had sales on the extended warranties as well. I doubt you can price match the warranty cuz its likely BB would be cheaper anyway, but surely you could match the laptop IF, the whole laptop is the same, part for part

Something else to consider when you go to buy an Alienware system, or anything else, is Ebates...

I can attest that on my $2500 Alienware system purchase (discounted from full price of $3500+), I received $300 from them. This brought the cost of my AW 17R4 down to about $2200 USD.

As this is a separate entity from Dell, it doesn't interfere with their promos, discounts, etc. This is like *free* money.

    upload_2017-4-7_7-34-53.png

The only "downside" that I've found is that Ebates only mails out checks once a quarter, so you'll have to wait a bit for the "big fat check" to arrive...

I wonder if there are any other programs out there like Ebates, and if they could stack on top of each other... Sort of like those extreme coupon clippers at the grocery store that get $100 worth of groceries for a couple bucks...

Anyone else used Ebates or another program such as this? Comments? Is there a dark side to this that I don't know about?

    Cheers,
    CP

-- As an aside, see the $3.40 from Vans? That was an online shoe purchase I made for my son. He didn't like the shoes, returned them and took the $85 in cash instead to buy something else... Guess what? I still made the $3.40...

    Sorry my mistake, I actually meant the 17.3 inch UHD (3840 x 2160) IPS Anti-Glare 300-nits Display

They usually have a 5 digit alpha-numeric code or Dell Part Number!

Dell is replacing my Toshiba SSD with a Samsung one due to high temps. Do you guys know if the replacement SSD comes with Dell drivers/software pre-installed or is it barebones Windows 10 without any of the drivers?

Mine goes up to 80C while transferring huge files.

Strangely enough, the 80C is only when I am overclocking the CPU. When I do not overclock, the SSD goes up to max of 70C. Seems like the PCH temperature affects the SSD temperature as well or something.

    Hi guys. Some updates:

My unit was replaced due to CPU temps reaching 95deg C after about 30 minutes to an hour of gaming (older unit was i7-6820HK), however the SK Hynix SSD never reached above 58deg C (and nor did the PCH). This was never overclocked or modded. Also there were issues with the screen (banding issues).

My replacement unit (brand new build) came with the i7-7820HK, but when I open HWInfo64, although the top part of the summary screen correctly identifies the CPU as the Kaby-lake i7-7820HK (Codename: Kaby Lake-H), at the bottom of the screen, it shows the motherboard as: Alienware XXXXX and the Chipset as: Intel CM238 ( Sky Lake PCH-H). Is this what reads for everyone else's chipset for their Kabylake 7820HK? Or have I got a dud/bastardised hybrid?

I ask because this new replaced unit puts out even more heat than the previous, with the SSD (Toshiba) reaching 85deg C on an average gaming session of 30-45 minutes of GTAV or Battlefield 1. (The PCH temp goes hand in hand with the SSD's, and matches it). CPU temps are similar, with mid 90's reached after 30 minutes or so of gaming. I have never overclocked anything (...mostly because I have no idea of how/what to do).

Having spoken to Dell, they are going to send out a technician, with replacements of the heatsink, re-pasting and replacing the SSD.

Should I be asking to get the unit replaced entirely, rather than a technician to work on it? Because surely I couldn't possibly get a dud THIRD TIME IN A ROW...???

Mine says the same. Btw, this PCH version is compatible with 7th gen CPUs. Refer to: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/performance-chipsets/cm238-chipset-brief.html

Also, the SSD overheating is an issue of the SSD brand, Samsung ones don't overheat. Mine is Toshiba and it does overheat. Getting it replaced by Dell this week.

Anyone getting issues with the AGA recently? I just got another 1080 (on sale) and popped it in. Now my 17 keeps restarting and won't see the GPU. I get lights like the system turns on, but nothing... WTF

Same thing happened to me. That's how my 17 r3 died. AGA worked fine and then one day it kept restarting. Finally booted up and I'd get a blue screen with Stop Code: WHEA UNCORRECTABLE ERROR.

Got it working. Installed the GTX 1080 Drivers first. Then I opened up the Amp and played with the cables some... maybe one was loose... either way it works now. Probably user error :(
