    How will this replacement happen?

Usually the SSD will come preimaged with the stock Dell driver configuration and you will lose the data on your old SSD. However, you can ask them if you can keep the old SSD for a short while for the purpose of cloning your old data to the new SSD. Use Macrium reflect for this.

If you have an onsite tech, have him do all the work.

    Now for good news.

Hey guys, I now provide FREE thermal pad upgrade to 6w/mk on top of the display calibration bonus.

Price for repaste have been greatly reduced until the end of summer.

If you don't want to pay for thermal pads, and get better deal for repasting service, now is the time.

    FML!
I never seen such incompetence! I've been talking to a seller lady from Dell-Spain for 6 days now and I can't order my 17 R4...
Shes either gets the price wrong, or the address, or the config, takes a full day to answer... etc... It's literally the hardest challenge to give them money.
I didn't switch sellers because there was a promotion on the 17 R4, 350€ off until the 6th of April. I began trying to order it on the 4th and I still couldn't do it. Now she won't give me the discounted price anymore, I'm pulling my hairs...

Any ideas on how to get this whole thing sped up? Should I talk to a supervisor or something? Honestly, this woman is thick

Send them a message through your Dell account. Its pretty confusing on how to get there, I feel like every website likes to hide the info to contact through email. You could also try the chat. But yeah, if it wasn't your fault you shouldn't have to pay more

    Thanks! I tried that.

But, God damnit! I got the same woman giving me support on chat  Just my luck.
At least I could talk to her on the spot and again explain my concerns. She said she already asked the financing department for approval on my system with the price from last week's deal. I hope to have it ordered soon, it's been way too complicated and long to buy this laptop.

You are doing a quote through someone for a discount right? It is a bit problematic, since everything goes from you, to them, to the quote numbers.. But in my case I saved 15%, which was 300$. Which is worth it if you convert the amount saved into how many hours of headaches at work you'd get haha.

When I did it, I originally ordered something and then the extended warranties went on sale so I had to have the girl make another (which didn't happen) so I paid for 4 years when on the website 4 was the cost of 3. But in the end I ended up returning and buying a GTX1070 vs 1060, since the laptop was on sale for about 400 off, so I paid about 30$ more to go through the trouble of returning, having another quote made and waiting since they don't do it on weekends and then ordering again. Very worth it though

Yeah I was getting 350€ because they were on sale last week plus an additional 10% discount over that. The price was great, 17R4, 78020HK, 32GB, GRX1080, QHD 120Hz, 500GB SSD, 1TB HDD, with the backpack and a kensington lock, 2800€, regular price is about 3450€ so a 650€ saving is a BIG deal and worth the effort.

Yeah there is a few people I tried helping out with giving the info some months ago, but I didn't know how to word it then without posting a referral which is against the rules. Then I thought to just tell you to post asking for a Dell brand ambassador. I definitely recommend it to anyone else though, either it helps out the department of the brand ambassador or they receive some sort of commission, but the big thing is what we save haha

So apparently the SSD I am getting will only have Windows 10 installed on it. No drivers will be installed as it will be fresh copy of Windows purchased from Microsoft (they're giving the usb too to me with Windows 10). I will definitely have the technician do most of the work. Hopefully he knows the correct order etc. to download and install Dell stuff.

I have an Alienware 17 R4 with GTX1080 and 1080p screen. Rebooting after Fn + F7 to Switch to Performance Mode isn't working. I need to disable the iGPU so I can access the Nvidia Display properties for setting custom resolutions and adjusting my color balance... but it just doesn't seem to work.

Anyone have any ideas of what I need to do? Thanks!

Hmm, you have GTX1080 and 1080P non gsync? Never saw this option before.

Install the OSD to make sure that FN+F7 is working as intended.

    Hello all,
After pining for ages (years in total) I finally plunged into Alienware - since they had a good deal on Refurbished laptops.

    Specs: 17R4, 6820HK, GTX 1080, 2x8GB, 1TB 7.2kHDD, 512GB m.2, QHD GSync;
Price: $1511+Tax (after 10% off on Dell Outlet)
I bought 2 year premium warranty just to be on the safe side.

I would appreciate if anyone knows whether the thermal issue may have been resolved by Dell when they refurbish laptops? Or do I expect the same issue on extreme (90degree+) temps.
My usage: I dont want to overclock - I can infact reduce the CPU clock speed. I also don't plan to do much gaming - my intention is to use the GPU for deep learning (since it has a lot of CUDA enabled cores).

    Cheers

Wow that is a huge steal on a outlet. I wish I waited and went with a outlet + warranty but its a learning experience for the future. Yeah it will likely have the same issue, its likely the reason it was returned too haha. The newer Kabylake are extremely easy to repaste but the older skylake require a lot more unplugging and unscrewing. Still worth it though if you feel safe doing it

How are the kabylakes that much easier to repaste? Is it not the same chassis and components as the skylake models?

    Hello Team,

I was curious what types of PCH temperatures people are seeing and if it is relevant? I have the Kaby 7820hk with the 1080 and QHD. I just noticed that temperature is reaching the mid 80s stock clocks while playing about an hour of Overwatch. I had a 44x OC on the CPU and it was riching the lower 90s (92,93). I was getting blue screens with that OC - that could be a fine tuning issue and not related to the temp at all. That temp just seems insanely high to me. So I was curious what others are getting and what can be done to reduce that temperature if necessary? I am monitoring with HWinfo - if that is reliable.

    Notes:
    • I have repasted with Conductonaut. My GPU and CPU temperatures during that same session are good. GPU never goes over 65C and CPU never over 70 (nearly the same with the OC)
    • Firestrike loop does not stress it enough to get to that temperature on the PCH. It seems to only be during game sessions.
    • No blue screens stock but the right side of the keyboard gets uncomfortably hot (around Shift, Enter, arrow keys).
    • Even browsing the web just after about 20 minutes, PCH hovers in the lower 50s
    • My card shipped with the latest vBios.
    • I have tried elevating and that doesnt seem to help.I also tried putting a small heatsink on the chip next to the ram as I saw in a thread for other systems. It didn't really seem to have an effect (used this https://www.amazon.com/Raspberry-Co...id=1491924181&sr=8-4&keywords=copper+heatsink - just happened to have some laying around and have more).
I have plenty of fujipoly, heatsinks and thermal compound of various flavors laying around. Open to suggestions, insight and really would like to see what others are getting.

The Nvidia control panel "display" options are not available to me... and multiple people have said you must reboot with Fn +F7 to disable the intel iGPU. Once that is done you can modify the card's settings. But, still not working for me even with the latest OSD. It says it is going to disable the iGPU but it never does.

    Thanks,

    - Jason

Thanks! I also felt it was returned for the heat issue. Still will see if I can make it work with lower CPU clock if possible.

With my 6700HQ + 1060 I had to literally take everything apart except the monitor to get to the heatsink/motherboard. With my 7700HQ + 1070, you simply take off the bottom cover, then you take off the black plastic-like separator piece that divides everything and then you unscrew 3 tiny screws on each fan as well as the 7 heatsink screws and you can repaste, that's how I did it. You don't have to mess with any ribbon cables, only the 2 tron light cables that are attached to that black plastic-like thing. At least that's what I remember. I also cut away the black divider thing a tiny bit so my Killer 1535 slides in and out easy (I don't ever want to have to deal with those O-rings)

Just a heads up, in case anyone else is in the same boat with replacing their QHD for the original 17R4s with the horizontal stripes "watermark" issue:

I've been waiting for a replacement for my 17R4's QHD GSync 2560x1440 TN display (with the horizontal lines issue) with the i7-6820HK. I contacted Dell on March 9 for one of the new stripe-free QHD replacement panels, but was told that it was on backorder, until May 28 supposedly. (I already had the QHD panel swapped in December 2016, but the replacement panel had the same exact issue striping issue.)

Today, a month after I contacted them about the display, they emailed me today saying that they still have a backorder on the QHD displays, so they offered an upgrade to the newer i7-7820HK processor and the UHD (3840x2160) IPS display. Mixed feelings about switching to the UHD non-GSync panel. I just hope the light/corner bleed isn't going to be too bad.

Being that I do a lot of graphics/art work and 3D modeling, I told them to send the UHD replacement. I learned that TN panels are crummy for doing graphics work but good for gaming, while IPS panels are the reverse. I did enjoy gaming on the 120HZ GSync QHD panel though, despite the horizontal stripes issue. Fortunately, I've also ordered an external GSync monitor (Acer Predator x34) for my gaming needs.

Depending on the games you play 60hz panel may not be a good option. 1080 is strong but running AAA titles at that resolution and hold the performance to even 60fps without dialing down the settings. 120hz is just so fluid and a great resolution for a 17" screen and the 1080 to handle.

    Revised PCH Mod.
(Revised and Improved over the copper shim method that I had posted here.)

Thanks for being patient guys. I just had to make sure before publishing this (long duration tests)...many many tests later, it's sealed and confirmed. It works great.

Note: Notice the orientation of the fins (horizontal). Also, the height you want is approx. ~5-6mm. The size of the actual HS doesn't have to be exact. I may even end up trying a bigger size (width) later and test to see if it makes any distance. The thing you don't want happening is having the rate of thermal dissipation exceed the amount of air flow that's under there for obvious reasons.

    Enjoy :)

Hi guys. I need some help. I struggle to decide with one will be better for gaming. Currently I'm with Clevo p775dm3 full HD g sync 75mhz 6700k gtx 1080 32gb ram 2400mhz. I'm thinking to sell it and get AW 17 r4 6820hk with gtx 1080 and also 32gb ram 120mhz QHD panel. I do have aw 13 and I just love the build quality and keyboard so much. As said in before it's going to be only for gaming. I like clevo but keyboard isnt the best and also screen even overclocked its only 100mhz.
Is there big difference with fps in games 6700k vs 6820hk? It will be same gtx 1080. Also fans are loud like in Clevo ?? Thanks

Well before we dig into this too much, does this actually work for anyone? Does anyone else on here find Fn + F7 and rebooting does nothing? Does anyone on here with non-gsync displays have the Display options available under Geforce Config?

    Thank you!

    - You've never had a problem viewing and modifying the DISPLAY settings under the Geforce Control Panel when Optimus is enabled?

    or

    - You've never had a problem rebooting to enable/disable the iGPU?

Just trying to be clear. I'd like to avoid having to return this thing.

    enable/disable works for me (15R3 6820HK/1070/4K)

using custom resolution on optimus mode won't work, intel gpus are crap that way

    have you tried DDU?

last resort is to clean install if ddu doesn't work

I'm facing a weird issue in Tobii eye tracking power options after the windows 10 creator's update. My screen is set to turn off after 30 secs. As soon as it turns off, it turns back on again after a few seconds and then doesn't turn off.

I've tried reinstalling both Dell version and directly from the Tobii website. None seem to resolve this issue. Anyone else facing similar issues or has a resolution?

I have the 6700HQ and the GTX1070 ... AW17 with 1080p IPS screen (non g sync) ... FN-F7 works perfectly; I use it all the time to switch the iGPU as my main GPU in order to extend my battery life when not using AC power.

And yes, all display options are available ...

    Best of luck ...

This is what happens when their hiring requirement is A+ certified. You are tested and required to know useless stuff on old outdated tech but stuff like this where you learn from experience and outside of books... results in stupid questions asked by the tech support to the consumer lol.

Yeah, SSD are supposed to be within a specific range of temperatures. Extremely high (or low) temperatures like that will just result in data loss or a dead SSD. I remember seeing online sometime ago that if the SSD was even kept stored for a week without use at a specific temperature, it apparently loses all data. Idk the specific SSD used or the temperature (though I don't remember it being very high or low), I basically just remembered to always keep the SSD used if I cared about the data

New update, you say? I'm not seeing it. Did you get an early release or something? I'm hoping an update will fix Windows Hello on the Creator's update.

Oh, wait... I do see that Tobii Aware was updated today. Is that what you meant? Unfortunately, that won't help me, since I have the full Eye Tracking.

Yeah, the full tracking software says it was updated two days ago, and I'd downloaded it yesterday, uninstalled mine, and reinstalled, but Windows Hello still won't recognize me (even though it seems to scan in my face okay during setup). This all worked on the Anniversary update, but broke on Creator's.

What's weird though, is that, according to the release notes, this latest update is supposed to upgrade firmware to 2.17.0, but mine is at 2.8.0. Gah!

Also try changing your power plan even if you change it and then change it back to where you had it just to save it again.

The update totally messed up all 6 of my machines power plans but after saving the plan again it seemed to fix that?

Ooh! I just (finally) got a response from the ticket I opened yesterday with Tobii support. They say, "We currently have an issue with Window´s Creator Edition. This will be solved with a new update that is estimated to be released on the 18th of April."

The SSD will also throttle at those temps resulting in loss of performance.

The Kaby and the Sky are the same. You could have done that on the Skylake as well.
However it is not suggested as its easy to break the fans housing.

Was not aware of that. I'd rather risk breaking a fan's housing than risk breaking one of the 10 or so ribbon cables though lol. You break that connector and they'll probably make you buy a whole new motherboard VS a metal shroud/heatsink

So you're facing similar issues? My tobii power settings have gone bonkers. Let's hope they send out an update soon!

Finally got a tech to my house yesterday to replace my toshiba SSD with a Samsung one. The temps are still a little bit high under load but there a good 10-15c below what the toshiba was, plus its a hell of alot faster.

It automatically updated for me. I guess I was the first one's to receive it in Microsoft's list.
