Still, shouldn't reach thermal throttling. Only 2 degrees before thermal shutdown. You could test with AIDA64 a couple of hours. Or test with OCCT and Heaven. Expect higher average max temp.

Both. The max temp wouldn't be lower as dust will come and ambient temp change.

No, last time they realised a new revision in September time was 2015 revision and that was the Alienware 17 r3 revision which included skylake upgrade up from haswell cpu. Gpu remained the same (maxwell). Laptop had subtle design changes from the a17 r2.

Alienware have already refreshed the Alienware 17 r4 this year with kaby lake cpu in January, although they kept the same design and revision no (r4).

As pascal architecture looks like it's going to see out the rest of this year and intels new cannonlake cpu architecture isnt due until next year I doubt Alienware will revise the design of the current laptop this year only to revise it again early next year with nvidia Volta and Cannonlake.

Unless they do a revision with intel coffee lake 8th gen which has 6 cores (i7) cpu or AMD architecture.

Make sure the cable is properly seated if you know how to check that. for some reason mine has come loose a few times and then Tobii stops working. you have to really make sure it's in there good.

    hey all,

first time poster here. I've tried using the search function on webcam covers, but didn't really dig up anything new. I have a AW 17 R4 and I was wondering if anyone has any webcam covers they have and would recommend. I bought one from Steagle but I think it might be too small? There are a few things around the actual lens that I'm not too sure if I can cover etc. any help is appreciated.

the qhd 120hz on aw17 has a 72% srgb color gamut which nets around 85-90% sRGB, it isn't anything special to speak of

not sure about the 120hz 15", I'll have to take a look if I get a chance to use the 15 with the 1080 maxi-pad

Is it worth it? No. Absolutely not.

TL;DR as every people have said, the maxi-pad version of the GPU is scam. You're basically paying more for less.

That said, the GPU isn't anything special. Just the vbios is set to have a lower maximum power draw, and the nvidia software is now saying that you're a special snowflake for owning a Maxi-pad GPU.

Given good cooling and you unlock the vbios, the maxi-pad version of a 1080/1070 can be "upgraded" to a normal version 1080. That's if the power delivery circuit and power delivery circuit cooling is capable enough to sustain the increased GPU power demand.

Question- out of those who more recently received the 17r4 did you need to repaste and pad?

Also was the new vbios right from the factory for the 1080?

I needed to repad mine, the 180w vbios proves to be too hot for the power delivery to handle with stock thermal pad.

I'm coming over from the Precision lineup and am curious as to what are people's thoughts of the Alienware R17R4 for video editing (and no gaming whatsoever)? It seems like I can get the Alienware 17 R4 cheaper than the Precision M7710 with similar specs. Only con I notice so far is that the Alienware only has 2 RAM slots for a maximum of 32GB instead of 64GB on the Precision. The GPU seems better on the Alienware though.

How is the performance difference of the 1070 vs the 1080 too? Is it worth the money to get the 1080?

You can take a look on the Acer Predator 17 X. It provides support for 64 gigs of ram and it has much better ips screen. almost good enough for the photo editing.
right now I try to choose between predator and awr4. both are not perfect. main disadvantage of acer is the absence of the predefined configurations - you have to buy a machine with ssd installed (I think it is Toshiba) and ram. of course ebay is still alive and you can replace them and sell original parts but it adds unnecessary level of headache. awr4 is much better here - you can buy a nice machine without ssd with minimum size of ram and add everything you want later. and you'll have premium support from dell.
And in spite of the bad rumors about bad quality of the acer's customer support I can tell from my own experience that it is pretty decent. I still remember how they started process of replacement of the video card of my 18'' machine after 5mins of the conversation.

I thought that the AW 17 R4 had 100% AdobeRGB on the UHD screen (which is why I'm considering it as I know the Precision does)? I want to keep in the Dell ecosystem too just because I really like Dell's warranty.

Yeah, I hear the UHD IPS 60Hz is great for working. Not sure about the coverage though, someone around here should know a panel number.

On another note, is anyone using the TactX Macro Keys for anything?
I don't really play mobas or anything, just curious on where people are using them.

As I remember AW17r4 UHD panel is 100% Adobe RGB.

With TactX Macro Keys apart from launching apps (as browser, calc, player etc), you can automate a lot of stuff with additional scripting as Autohotkey\AutoIT.
Also I assigned one button as a Context menu key ( http://bit.ly/2uiFvCW). I got used to it and 17R4 lacks it.

The components is designed around the graphics power draw. Run stock 1080 firmware and you will most likely smell fried hardware  I'm sure it will be a ugly sight. Black as Hell!!

Why would you want to run stock bios on 'castrated' chip? :D At the end of day it's all for portability, however not as successful as they proposing it. Though AW team has the balls to show actual TDP of the GPUs on the product page.

Lots of people are getting units that are running fine stock out of the factory now. You can still get them to run cooler with a repad/repaste but it is not longer a necessity to keep it running without overheating. The worst part about stock paste I find is the longevity can be a lot shorter then aftermarket pastes.

Hi guys - quick question. Getting a minor problem lately on the 17 r4. Very occassionally - in games the fan speed goes up / can move the mouse, but it isn't responsive anymore, Need to press the power to restart it, this happened a few times (also happened once in chrome/watching video).

I'm I using it wrong e.g. Am i support to press FN + f7 to disable integrated graphics?

Have tried bios update / clean reinstalled intel / GPU / audio driver. Is reinstall OS now an idea?

Anyone getting browser scrolling lag with the UHD screen? also when I hold backspace to delete a word it deletes very slow , im not sure but Im pretty sure it has to do with having a 4k screen since it uses more pixels.

At stock clocks the units coming from the factory are much better then before.
However most decent even moderate overclocks fair much better with repasting.
The are are some tolerance issues still. However again this mainly affects overclocking.

If I do I will probably use Grizzly TIM but not their LM Stuff. Just had a buddy cooked his Titan Xp by playing with that and getting it all over the place. Do you see good temps from just using their Hydronaut Paste?

Get kryonaut its their top tier paste. Search around some of the deals are bogus if you care about money. Finding a decnetly priced tube of more than 1g with decent shipping took a while but its out there.
